We are having a get together next week, wine and nibbles cheese and meats kind of thing. Some of our friends have become vegetarian since we last had them over,
What are some nice things that we can make for them so we are not just giving them a plate of carrot sticks and hummus!

Cheese, most is vegetarian.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 18/12/2022 00:21

If they're vegetarian they'll eat cheese. Nachos and salsa. Pizza squares, mini quiches etc

RocketIceLollie · 18/12/2022 00:23

Falafels & vegetable samosas then the usual buffets standards of bread, salad, cheese, etc.

There are lots of ideas here - vegsoc.org/recipes/

NameChangeObvsx1 · 18/12/2022 00:28

Olives, houmous, crudités, bread sticks, sun dried tomatoes, salad bits, cheese if they’re not vegan. Biscuits for cheese, stuffed peppers, pasta and potato salad. Salsa, nachos, Quorn cocktail sausages.

Honestly, it’s not hard to have no meat.

ginandlemonade23 · 18/12/2022 03:49

Lots of cheese isn't actually vegetarian as it contains animal rennet. Check the packaging first to be sure

pelargoniums · 18/12/2022 04:02

Samosas, falafel, stuffed vine leaves, tzatziki, baba ganoush, spinach and feta parcels, quiche, potato salad, olives, pasta salad, nuts, spring rolls, taquitos, frijoles, bruschetta, etc.

amylou8 · 18/12/2022 05:11

I expect to eat around the meat and something like this, no special catering necessary. If there's cheese I'm happy.

Speciality/artisan type cheese maybe. Anything you get from Asda is fine.

AdaColeman · 18/12/2022 05:34

Devilled eggs
Tempura vegetables eg broccoli florets
Mini quiche
Spiced or herbed homemade popcorn
Cubes of frittata
Vegetable gyozas
Cheese straws/mini cheese scones
Cheese profiteroles
Spring rolls
Mozzarella crispy fingers

AdaColeman · 18/12/2022 05:42

Vegetable sushi

HairyMcLarie · 18/12/2022 06:09

I've never know a veggie give the tiniest shite about whether cheese uses animal derived rennet or not. Most wouldn't even ask or know

If it's just nibbles and you are looking to have an alternative to the meats then the cheese will be fine along with one or a couple of the following.

Chips and dips
Veggie sausage rolls are nice for everyone-Linda McCartney frozen are delicious
Nice bread and good oil and balsamic
Olives, nuts, cornichons
For more substantial stuff then Margherita pizza with some mushrooms and onions
Veggie quiche
You could make some spinach and feta fill parcels
Little sarnies of egg Mayo
Spring tools

Etc etc. so much you can offer. Just look in the veggie frozen section in the supermarket

Cranberry and Brie bites with ready rolled puff pasty Here

make pizza dough, roll out flat & spread with pesto then roll into a sausage. Cut sausage into inch size piece and bake sideways in baking tray for 20 minutes in medium heat oven

Well, not parmesan (though one wouldn't put it on a cheeseboard). Or comte, or gorgonzola, or their brie de mieux. Their "bog standard" brie is. But quite a lot of their extra special cheeses (that one might splash out on for a party) aren't veggie. I also have quite a lot of nominally veggie friends who turn a blind eye to rennet and aren't fussy about cheese at all, but one has to know ones audience for that.

sashh · 18/12/2022 06:41

Mini pizza, check the cheese and buy a cheap pizza, use a cookie cutter to make mini pizza, you can add things to it.

Filo parcels, you can put various things in, spinach and cheese, mushrooms and cream cheese, brie with mango chutney.

Onion bhajis, samosas, pakora, pakora are great to use up any left over veg.

Courgette and coriander soup served chilled in a shot glass.

Cheese straws - get pre made and pre rolled puff pastry, put it on a baking sheet, 'butter' it with Dijon mustard, mark it out into straws with a knife and cover with grated cheese - put in the oven for 10-12 mins.

leftitabitlate22 · 18/12/2022 06:42

@amylou8 not all cheese in Asda is fine! For starters Gruyere and Parmesan are never vegetarian not that I'd expect them on a cheeseboard. But it's easy to check packaging.

If they eat cheese I wouldn't worry about adding anything extra, cheese and biscuits is quite filling.

TangledBlue · 18/12/2022 06:45

I'd love any of the following:

Pasta salad
Potato salad
Cheese and biscuits
Spinach and feta parcels
Spanish omelette
Olives
Vol au vents or puff pastry tarts with a cheese and vegetable filling
Crisps
Sour cream dip
Veggie spring rolls
Cheese straws
Quorn chicken or ham slices
Salad

As a previous poster says, always check that the cheese is vegetarian. Be careful of desserts too, some things contain beef/pork gelatin.

leftitabitlate22 · 18/12/2022 06:57

Ah yes desserts, anything with a mousse filling is unlikely to be vegetarian or anything with a glaze like some cheesecakes, profiterole type desserts

Ocrumbs · 18/12/2022 07:40

Anything but quorn

Ask them what kind of foods they eat.

There are all sorts who describe themselves as vegetarians, so be on the safe side, e.g. some care about animal-derived rent, some don't.

echt · 18/12/2022 07:58

Rennet!!!

I am a veggie who very much does give a shit about whether cheese contains rennet. It’s probably why I don’t eat much cheese at all as I remember when most was not veggie.
op from my experience you can’t go wrong with samosas and spring rolls. Remember the meat eaters will also eat them too so need enough for everyone.
Rice/pasta/cous cous tend to go down well.

Elmo230885 · 18/12/2022 08:14

I'm a vegetarian and tend to stay away from the cheese board as many people don't realise some cheeses contain rennet.

I quite like the quorn snacks (the picnic egg ones), mozzarella sticks, samosas/spring rolls etc If invited to someone's home I mention I'm veggie but don't expect anything specifically for me, I'll make do.

BarrelOfOtters · 18/12/2022 08:16

My sister is vegetarian and cares about rennet in cheese.

EnyoClytemnestra · 18/12/2022 08:26

@upfucked Most cheese is not vegetarian, it has rennet in it, so OP will specifically need to look for veggie cheese
Most wine also is non-veggie as it has isinglas (fish swim bladder) to filter it
