Wensleydale on a plane?

Suboptimalsitch · 17/12/2022 17:13

I’ve googled but am still not sure if Wensleydale cheese will be safe to eat after being in hold baggage and out of a fridge for 7 hours. I don’t won’t to freeze it as the texture goes weird. Im not going anywhere warm. Does anyone know if it’s ok? I don’t want to give anyone a bad stomach. TIA

It'll be fine.
It's cheese. It's already gone off if you think about it.
Real cheese aficionados don't keep cheese in the fridge anyway.

Hooverphobe · 17/12/2022 17:18

It’s pretty cold in the hold… it’ll be fine. Took me 24hrs to get my Stilton home a few weeks ago. Can’t wait to crack it open!

wibblewobbleball · 17/12/2022 17:19

Yeah it'll be fine. It's colder than a fridge in the hold!

Pack it with those little sandwich ice packs if you need to

CoffeeBoy · 17/12/2022 17:20

Where re you travelling to? Since brexit you can’t take cheese to Europe I don’t think.

EarthlyNightshade · 17/12/2022 17:22

Where are you taking it? I don't think there are many places you can bring cheese.

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 17/12/2022 17:23

@CoffeeBoy

Yes - no meat or dairy from UK to Europe 🙁

"I've had enough with this motherfucking Wensleydale on this motherfucking plane." - Wallace & Gromit: the wilderness years.

As a pp mentioned, I'd check the regulations re taking cheese to your destination country, but otherwise I don't think 7 hours or so out of the fridge will matter at all.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 17/12/2022 17:25

...the latest Wallace and Gromit thriller. Forget Snakes on a Plane - it's Wensleydale on a Plane Grin

EarthlyNightshade · 17/12/2022 17:26

I just googled "travelling with cheese". Sometimes I love mumsnet.

Lonelycrab · 17/12/2022 17:26

Yes I thought this might be about the slightly less exciting sequel to snakes on a plane Grin

FuckabethFuckor · 17/12/2022 17:27

The Yorkshire film industry needs to get this made right fucking now.

MissDollyMix · 17/12/2022 17:34

Thanks OP, it’s been a while since a MN thread made me properly laugh. I hope you all get your cheese!

WittyUser · 17/12/2022 17:53

I’ve taken cheese back home on 16hr flight (including layover), totally fine. The inside of the suitcase is still chilly when I open it up at home the other end!

Isseywith3witchycats · 17/12/2022 18:05

we go to the wenslydale factory on a regular basis and the cheeses are not on refridgerated displays so of course it will be fine

IcakethereforeIam · 17/12/2022 18:06

Totally, thought 'la yover', was a type of soft French cheese. I'm tired.....and now I want Brie.

Suboptimalsitch · 17/12/2022 18:06

Oh no. I’m going to Germany. I never even thought it wouldn’t be allowed. I was just wondering about food safety. Is this one of the many advantages of Brexit. Unable to travel with Wensleydale. I’ll just have to take my pet snake instead.

garlictwist · 17/12/2022 18:07

I opened this thinking you were going to ask how to fly to Wensleydale...

Suboptimalsitch · 17/12/2022 18:08

It’s official. I’ve just checked and no meat or dairy allowed to be taken into the EU.

I thought this was the name of a new Nicholas Cage movie or something for a second 🤣

How does this work exactly?

I will be travelling from the UK back to my EU country after Christmas (first time since Brexit) and would like to bring a several pack of Wendsleydale back in my hand luggage. Surely it won't get confiscated at security in Manchester as they don't know and don't care which country I'm travelling to? Customs officers at my home airport are usually too busy smoking and/or falling asleep to notice cheese smugglers 😲🤔😅

IcakethereforeIam · 17/12/2022 18:24

Perhaps they have specially trained cheese hounds, hide it amongst the dirty socks.

CoffeeBoy · 17/12/2022 18:26

They do confiscate stuff. They will even confiscate your ham sandwich …..though bizarrely I assume they still sell ham sandwiches once you’re past security?
