Someone just broke into my garden.

I'm sat here shaking and chain smoking and wide awake when I have a 7 am start in the morning.

IDK even know why I'm shaking or full of adrenaline. They never took anything or threatened me. The dog chased them off. I only saw a trainer vanish over the fence and then heard someone screaming for help.

The Police have been and can't find anyone.

Also next door are gonna hate me in the morning because the dog barked and growled for a good 20 minutes while the men were stuck in the garden behind mine. I didn't want to bring him back inside in case they tried to get back into my garden or neighbouring gardens.

I'm not surprised you're on edge after that.
If I was your neighbour I'd probably be grateful rather than annoyed at your alert dog.

CuriousEats · 16/12/2022 00:19

Your dog just prevented that twat from burgling your neighbourhood. I'd be grateful if I was your neighbour too!

ApexPredator · 16/12/2022 00:20

Gosh - hope you are OK

I agree your neighbours will probably be grateful to your dog. I read that burglaries are increasing and it’s probably good to have an audible protection such as this! So upsetting though to think of someone on your property Flowers

He stayed at the fence snarling until he couldn't hear them anymore. Then he patrolled the garden for another fifteen minutes before he would come back inside.

The chihuahua joined the guarding from the safety of the back step Grin

I'd always thought he would be overjoyed if a random new friend landed in his garden. Everything and everyone is a potential new best friend who must be cuddled as far as he is concerned.

No wonder you're shaken up! I'd be grateful for the dog!

BMW6 · 16/12/2022 00:32

Well they won't be trying your place again! Well done that dog!!

Frequency · 16/12/2022 00:40

I don't think they'll be trying any place for a while. I think the dog really freaked them out. One of them was stuck on something which is why they were trapped in the other garden for so long. I could hear him sobbing and pleading with his friend to rip his pants off so he could go home.

Well done dogs! 💝
Hope you are all feeling better today. An alert dog is a great deterrent.
And I hope the burglars had a very nasty - and very cold - time.

I always thought this about one of my dogs, too (she's daft as a brush and loves everyone, the other one is much more standoffish with strangers). When someone broke into our garden a few years ago the standoffish one made lots of noise but didn't do much else, the "loves everyone and everything" one was at the back door snarling, teeth out, hackles up, ready to launch herself at them. They fucked off pretty sharpish. She's "my" dog more than our other dog, though, and they know when people's intentions aren't good.

Hope you're OK, OP. Stuff like this does really shake you up. Sounds like your dog did a sterling job, though, and I doubt they'll be back again. Hopefully they'll pass the message on to their scabby little mates that yours isn't a house to be messed with, too.

EmmaAgain22 · 16/12/2022 01:04

No wonder you're shaken up

they were in the opposite garden?

Frequency · 16/12/2022 01:14

They were in my garden.

The dog heard a noise and started growling so I let him outside. He does it often and it's normally just the wind he is growling at. Letting him out to investigate stops him barking but this time he started barking the second the door was open and raced straight to the side fence.

I thought it was odd because he normally investigates the bins and the shed, since they are usually what makes noise in the wind so I followed him and saw a trainer vanish over my fence, followed by a loud crash and then someone crying and begging and pleading for help so I went inside to get my phone and called 999 while the dog guarded the fence. When I went back out to bring him inside I could hear one of them begging his friend to rip his pants off and crying that he wanted to go home so I assume he got caught on some trellis or a hedge or something.

So, they started in my garden and then the dog chased them to the garden at the side of mine where they got stuck. They got unstuck shortly before the police arrived, unfortunately.

Sorry, I was thinking they'd accessed your garden from the one opposite but it sounds like that was their attempted escape route

just wondering if that garden might have cameras or something that helps track these guys.

the crying, and the crazy cold makes me wonder - could it be a stupid prank?

CuriousEats · 16/12/2022 01:20

Who cares if it was a prank. Its trespassing, its stupid, and utterly selfish, as it leaves residents petrified, as seen on this thread.

I'd have them starved in a cell for a month for a prank, believe me.

just suggesting the possibility as it's less worrying.

KloppsTeeth · 16/12/2022 01:22

I’m sorry this has happened, no wonder you’re shaking. Thank goodness for your dog, and I hope this has been a lesson to these would be burglars. Hopefully the Police will check for CCTV.

I don’t think they will be back to repeat this, especially if one of them has to go home in freezing conditions with his kecks torn off.

Frequency · 16/12/2022 01:24

They didn't sound like kids. They sounded adult. I think the crying was because the dog was freaking them out. He's not a small dog so his head was popping above the fence when he was jumping up and barking.

His friend refused to help him rip his pants off, so I'm guessing they were worried the dog could get over the fence. He can't and I knew he couldn't otherwise I wouldn't have left him to get my phone. I would have dragged him back inside.

I'd happily set dogs on them.

so sorry OP. Hope you get some sleep.

thequeenoftarts · 16/12/2022 01:29

Well done to your dog, doing his job, I hope he scared the shit outta those fuckers. How dare they, just how dare they scare you like that. Bastards!! Treat that amazing dog to lots of nice things tomorrow and tell him I said he is amazing

Frequency · 16/12/2022 01:30

I'm feeling a bit calmer now. All is quiet and the dog is still on high alert patrolling the house and watching out of the back window. I'm going to finish my hot chocolate and go to bed.

And now I am calmer I am 100% convinced they will not come back to my garden or any of the gardens adjoining mine.

The dog has had some treats and a big cuddle.

The chihuahua was just ridiculous. I really don't understand what she thought she was going to scare off. I've seen rats bigger than her Grin

CuriousEats · 16/12/2022 01:31

Its a pity your dog couldn't reach his arse and bite him free!

@EmmaAgain22 true. Utter dicks either way.

Hope you're feeling calmer now OP.

KloppsTeeth · 16/12/2022 01:35

You’ll be fine, there is no way they will come back.
i bet he literally shit himself being trapped like that, your neighbour will probably find a frozen jobbie on the trellis tomorrow. 😁

we have a Ring outdoor camera that has an alarm you can trigger if you’re home and someone is kn your garden. Might be worth a back up plan but sleep well, they won’t be back

Bagpuss2022 · 16/12/2022 01:42

That’s so scary but good on your dog burglar scumbags.
its one of my worst fears a burglar getting in the house we have always had dogs our last was a German Shepard he was a brilliant deterrent stopped some scumbags getting off with my DS bike a few years ago
we are dogless and it does worry me I’m up every night till the Small hours on my own as I have bad insomnia every noise makes me jump.
you would think they wouldn’t be out in this weather though would you

A sobbing burglar! Hopefully it’s put him off for life!

Your dogs both deserve a nice big treat for being so brave.
