Classic films which lived up to the hype?

I feel like watching some classic movies over the festive period. Which movies lived up to their reputation for you? I know it's subjective to an extent but I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I'm throwing in The Godfather and Casablanca. They're now two of my favourite ever movies.

TIA

Pandora and the flying Dutchman.

Ava Gardner and James mason.

The barefoot contessa and an absolutely wonderful gem that's so old with bad sound...

You cant take it with you. Absolute gem. Very funny and poignant.

I love classic movies, but since Christmas is near, here are some of my holiday favorites.

It's A Wonderful Life (1946) - I don't watch it every year, mabye every five, but it is perfect in every way. It's not even very christmassy to me.

Miracle On 34th Street (1947) - I love this one, although I must say I prefer the 1994 version.

Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) - most beautiful Christmas movie ever - watch it just for the beautiful Judy Garland - she was never lovelier then in this Minelli's classic, and her christmas gown is a work of art,

White Christmas (1954) - This one is not my favorites, but I put it every year just for the train and party scenes alone. Even if I do not watch it, this is the one that I put while wrapping presents and making cookies.

Christmas In Connecticut (1945) - perfect christmas rom com. Five stars.

The Bishop's Wife (1947) -If you ever wanted to see what it would look like being seduced by Cary Grant, well this is the movie for you.

Holiday Affair (1949) - Good movie, although not that festive, and gritty in parts.

The Shop Around the Corner (1940) - Lovely Lubitsch at his best. They don't write scripts like that any more.

As for the rest, if you want perfect comedy watch everything written by Wilder and Brackett, especially Midnight (1939), the most perfect comedy ever written.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,
Elizabeth Taylor & Paul Newman
(Paul Newman...😍😛)

OMG yes, both at the height of their beauty.

The Bishop's Wife (1947) -If you ever wanted to see what it would look like being seduced by Cary Grant, well this is the movie for you.

Partner and I watched this last night. It was a really strange film. There was something off about it - essentially an angel conducting an affair with the Bishop's wife right in front of his eyes. There was a sense of menace, rather than the charm of It's a Wonderful Life. And David Niven's character was nowhere near as likeable as Jimmy Stewart's.

As a comparison piece, it was interesting. But I won't be watching it again.

OMG yes, both at the height of their beauty.

Yes, they are sexy as anything in this. Young Paul Newman is the only man that would turn me.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 20/12/2022 12:37

@Thecrackineverything
I think his wife actually built a sex room for them both!

Thecrackineverything · 20/12/2022 16:17

I think I missed that scene...

Yes! The scene where Brick holds Maggie's dressing gown to his face to smell her perfume gets me every time.😍

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 21/12/2022 07:26

@Thecrackineverything
😂.

In real life, his real life wife!

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Isn't it interesting how so many of us have also been totally hooked on that scene!! Totally!!

I wonder why....I doubt men would be intrigued if it was a woman doing that?

Room at the top

And another cracker that hasn't been mentioned...

Darling with Julie Christie.

Butterfield 8 Liz Taylor.

Billy liar with Tom Courtney.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/12/2022 07:52

@ZeViteVitchofCwismas Hadn't thought about that. 🤔

So many good old movies and it's nice to see so many recommendations here. Many I've seen, and many more on my list to get to.
Watched Roman Holiday again recently. Loved it - again.
Someone mentioned Singin' in the Rain - also very good. Can't help toe tapping and singing along to "I've got...." 😃

Thecrackineverything · 21/12/2022 14:55

@ZeViteVitchofCwismas In real life, his real life wife!

Whose? David Niven's?

What on earth does one put in a sex room?

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 21/12/2022 14:59

@Thecrackineverything

Paul Newmans wife had a special room built for their intimate moments.

Thecrackineverything · 21/12/2022 15:01

Oh, I don't blame her. I'd lock myself in there with him and 'lose' the key.

Or I would if I weren't a lesbian and he, well, dead.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/12/2022 15:46

Has anyone mentioned Breakfast at Tiffany's? Audrey Hepburn was for my money the most beautiful actress of all time. I also like The Nun's Story with the glorious Peter Finch.

Well you would, wouldn't you? If I had young Paul Newman in my sex room I'd never let him leave!
