Is there a secret to a smear free finish. Mine really need doing but they never look any good after I've wasted half a day on it

Windolene and kitchen roll.

B1rd · 15/12/2022 12:49

Windolene is wonderful. It's difficult to find and I usually buy it from Amazon. I hugely recommend the Windolene wipes too especially for silver taps and mirrors.

Vinegar and newspaper

Mr Muscle window cleaner and scrunched up newspaper

I put a bit of washing up liquid in a hot basin of water, put on windows with a fleecy sponge thing then squeege off. No streaks!

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 15/12/2022 12:54

I have some cloths that I got from Wilko.

One is textured like an e-cloth an the other is shiny.

Wet the first cloth and wipe over the windows. dry and shine with the second cloth.

Works really well and no smears.

We have floor to ceiling windows and all of our doors are glass.

Whatsthestorytomorrow · 15/12/2022 12:54

Mr muscle window cleaner and either kitchen roll or a lint free cloth. I have a couple of old hand towels I use.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 15/12/2022 12:54

Any window/glass spray and a lint-free window cleaning cloth. I treat them exactly the same as mirrors.

BamBamBilla · 15/12/2022 12:56

Fairy on a cloth to clean and squeegee off. Polish with a chamois.

OldTinHat · 15/12/2022 12:56

This stuff! I've tried all sorts in 50 odd years but this is fantastic. Not cheap, got it from QVC, but this bottle is on year three as you only need a tiny spray.

Was recommended to me and im in no way affiliated!

E cloth from Amazon. Wet the first cloth and polish with the second cloth.
I've just done a window full of dog nose marks easily.

Season0fTheWitch · 15/12/2022 13:14

Window cleaner with a microfibre cloth, then go over with a different, dry one to remove streaks

Jackiewoo · 15/12/2022 16:05

Karcher window vac. Since I bought it everyone happy to do the windows, including the teenagers. It does a great job and takes a lot less time.

canyouextrapol · 15/12/2022 16:52

See I usually wash them. Then karcher vac them, then polish witn microfibre cloth and glass cleaner but it's still a smeary mess. I will try an E cloth next thanks

If you’re doing all this, and still ending up with a smeary mess, you might have build up from either too much product, or using cloths that have been through a wash cycle with fabric conditioner/all in one type liquid or powder?

I am a cleaner, and have also done the above, more than once - terrible smeary mess when the sun shone on them, and at the time I thought they looked amazing!

Degrease/remove product (typing quickly so hope all makes sense):

  1. Make sure the cloths you’re using haven’t had fabric conditioner added to the load (or that you’re not using an ‘all in one’ washing liquid. This bit is really important!
  2. Using really hot water and a drop of washing up liquid (really, no more than a tiny drop to 1 litre of water), to wash the glass - use a non scratch scourer or cloth to give a thorough going over.
  3. Use a squeegee to remove liquid.
  4. Rinse with really hot water - squeegee again: make horizontal passes and wipe squeegee blade after each pass.
  5. If they look better, either stop or move to 6. If they don’t, rinse again with fresh hot water and squeegee.
  6. Try a window/glass cleaner for additional shine, with a proper window/glass cloth. My current favourite cleaner is Pink Stuff Miracle Glass and Window Cleaner, £1 Home Bargains, combined with a ‘diamond pattern’ glass cloth. The only other window/glass cleaner I’ve ever used which as good is Meguiars … but costs about 12 x for less volume.
  7. Old cotton/bamboo flannels/tea towels are great for wiping the edges missed by the squeegee and ‘buffing up’ … but massively important to make sure they are completely free of any softening agent (see 1).

Think like a window cleaner: traditional ones use a very mild detergent, rags and squeegees … and are much missed in my area!

Good luck!

E cloths for windows. Just wet the textured one with water and wipe it over the window, the dry with the shiny one. Did all my windows last week and not a single streak!

Bluevelvetsofa · 15/12/2022 21:09

Karcher window vac. It does mirrors and shower screens too.

ForgottenNurseryRhymes · 15/12/2022 21:30

I have a very vague memory of being told if you clean them when the sun is shining on them they'll look smeary.
Or I made that up years ago and have window cleaned by a very random self created rule.

PureBlackVoid · 15/12/2022 21:30

I use any glass cleaner with minky green cloths.

I can’t get the hang of squeegeeing - I don’t understand how you get the water off the edge glass without smudging it again.

PureBlackVoid · 15/12/2022 21:31

Just remembered I used to use newspapers, which were just amazing but the ink would stain the frames.

canyouextrapol · 15/12/2022 21:33

@Anotherselfemployedcleaner thank you! I will be following your instructions. Don't think the cloths have been in with fabric conditioner but I might pick up
some new ones to be certain

I use the water from the tumble drier drawer. It was recommended somewhere and it is magic. Works so well. Just put it in a spray bottle. Spray it on and wipe off then buff with kitchen roll.

allboysherebutme · 15/12/2022 21:36

Windolene. I've polished them before too, when I had polish in my hand to do the dusting, just got carried away and they came up lovely lol. X

Elbow grease for glass

Janedownourlane · 15/12/2022 21:41

Dilute zoflora, spray lightly then dry with kitchen roll or microfibre cloth. Never smears.
