Nurses strike - this is wrong isn’t it?

A nurse in the NHS dept I work in, is joining the strike today. However, she has taken annual leave so that she still gets paid. Not only that, she is the union rep!
Something very wrong there and really not in the spirit of the strike in my opinion.

True

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 15/12/2022 07:32

How do you know her annual leave wasn't booked ages ago - as in before she knew the strike was taking place.

WuTangGran · 15/12/2022 07:33

Judgmental AF. Do you think the nurses deserve a pay rise?

You cannot get AL approved once strike action has been set as far l know?

InWalksBarberalla · 15/12/2022 07:35

OMG,.MYOB

dolor · 15/12/2022 07:35

Oh bollocks. They all deserved to be paid way more than they are. Go away.

BeanieTeen · 15/12/2022 07:36

Healthcare workers have to book their leave quite far in advance don’t they?

atomicnotsoblonde · 15/12/2022 07:37

No annual leave could be booked once strike action was known.

FangedFrisbee · 15/12/2022 07:38

I don't think she'll be given it unless it's a pre arranged thing.

Whiterose23 · 15/12/2022 07:39

No Annual leave has been authorised on strike days for weeks.
Pre-booked annual leave hasn’t been cancelled
If staffing numbers are unsafe the hospital will negotiate with the union and nurses will be sent back to work from the picket lines

Who made you the judge? Are you a nurse on strike too?

I fully support both nurses and doctors getting a proper pay rise.

Allsnotwell · 15/12/2022 07:40

The teachers union state any annual leave won’t count or be paid - probably the same in the nurses union. Check your facts.

Northernsouloldies · 15/12/2022 07:40

Nurse strike article on bbc news on line. A few articles down Boris has reportedly earned a million pounds since quitting Pm job, for making some speeches. Something far wrong with that scenario.

And Boris earnings still way below football players and some TV presenters

User175435643 · 15/12/2022 07:44

They had probably booked the AL a long while ago

EileenAdler · 15/12/2022 07:44

Yes it is wrong, and I am a nurse.

GreenDanglyearrings · 15/12/2022 07:46

You cannot take an annual leave day on strike day. She probably had it prebooked but is joining the picket line to support her colleagues.

Working conditions are absolutely awful in the nhs and it's really effecting patient safety. Nursing have been incredibly worried for such a long time but they are getting desperate now, hence the strikes.

I don't think your opening post is true.

PearlclutchersInc · 15/12/2022 07:46

Thought they weren't allowed to take leave on strike days?

Anyway it turns out if there are patient safety issues they can be called in.

User175435643 · 15/12/2022 07:48

So what happens if there is a disaster like in the channel yesterday, there will be no one to tend to them.

LookItsMeAgain · 15/12/2022 07:48

So, she applied for and was granted annual leave before the strike action was called. The annual leave (I'm guessing here) wasn't cancelled so she is using a day of her annual leave to go out on strike. If the A/L hasn't been rescinded then I think fair dues to be using one of her days going out on the picket line.
If the A/L has been rescinded, then she isn't on annual leave, she is on strike so I don't get the point of your post.

By the way, I think all nurses in all disciplines of the role should be paid way above what they are. I think they do a job that would take it's toll on anyone and they help bring us into the world and help when we're on the way out too. Brilliant people. Way underpaid for what they do. That's what I think about nurses.

🙄 TV presenters don't get £m for a few speeches. I agree their salaries are ridiculous but it's supply and demand, they're good at what they do.

Not sure the same can be said for many politicians.

Yep, me too. Did you all clap for carers? That was easy, wasn't it? Now pay them what they are worth.

User175435643 · 15/12/2022 08:02

I didn't clap for anyone and the nurses did know what the pay scales were before they chose a poor paying career, it is quite easy to find, its like teachers jobs, why choose a career that pays so low in the first place

LaBellina · 15/12/2022 08:03

Nurses have to go to the food bank these days. Do you really blame them for wanting to get properly paid for their hard work and have a more decent working environment?
They’re professionals not charity volunteers.
