Feel so tearful after waking up and reading that the 6 year old has also died. Such a very dreadful thing to happen. I don’t know what the point of this post is but thinking of them all ❤️

Thank you @DashingWhiteSergeant I think you have guessed correctly how she died. It's not been easy and I know these poor parents will be suffering terribly right now. I hope they get professional support and maybe find support from each other as we did.

I'm so sorry for your loss and I am so glad you've been able to find a way forward. Lots of love to you x

@ApolloandDaphne I too have guessed and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I do think it would be helpful to understand the whole story rather than let people speculate. Everyone obviously wonders why primary age children were allowed out on their own but this might not be the case.

GoAgainstNicki · 15/12/2022 22:18

This is such a tragedy. I don’t even understand how this happened in the first place. RIP to those children

CrummyScrumpkin · 15/12/2022 22:22

I know from when my son died, I literally stood in a shop listening to two women gossiping about his death, it was so far from what actually happened that I didn't even recognise it was me and my son they were talking about until they said the street name, but their words have stayed with me for over 2 decades now.

Bloody hell that's awful @KitchiHuritAngeni. I hope you're doing better nowFlowers

DS is 11, he went out with his friends on Saturday to play in the snow, not near any water, although it likely wouldn't have occurred to me to say 'don't go on any icy water.'

I've thought about it all week as I can see how this could have happened to any young boys this weekend, it's the most horrific tragedy.

If there's absolutely anything at all to come from this it's that I really think it's reminded people to speak to their children about never going onto icy water. DS has also had a school wide assembly regarding winter safety this week as a result and I've spoken to him about it several times this week.

Those poor families.

I had exactly this same conversation with husband. My son was 9 when we had really heavy snow in 2009 and he was out all day with his friends sledging . It never occurred to us to warn him about icy water because we new where he was going with all his friends. Obviously now thinking about it he could so easily of decided to go off to a different field that did have a huge pond …accidents can happen so quickly.
Cannot imagine how the poor families are coping.

Snow and ice is exciting and children go giddy with excitement

The whole family loads of them could have been walking near the lake and the boys could have ran out into the ice and fallen through before anyone could stop them

A policeman smashed his hands trying to break the ice

Was it so cold the lake froze over them ?

You'd have to be a heartless person to blame the parents and feel real shame for that

Watapalava · 15/12/2022 23:26

Awful

i said day one this would be brothers and even more so the minute they released their age

so sad it’s so awful

I was taking to my dad on the phone about this tonight. The fact it was two siblings and a cousin with a friend really hit home, as my brother has two children and I have one. The age gaps are similar. DF was out for a walk at local nature reserve one morning earlier this week where he has a volunteer role, and there were two young boys stamping on the ice at the edge of the lake, no older than 6/7 mums half watching them half chatting. DF said he embarrassed himself by shouting across the lake for them to stop. He then went round and spoke to the parents, explaining his role there, how deceptively deep the water is and mentioned the incident discussed here (and apologised for shouting). The parents just said oh they'll be ok they're only by the edge! It was minus five here this morning.

PrincessFiorimonde · 15/12/2022 23:47

My heart goes out to their families. And to @ApolloandDaphne and @KitchiHuritAngeni and your families too Flowers

Cantdoitallperfectly · 15/12/2022 23:53

Shame on people for judging the parents when their children have so tragically lost their lives. I cannot begin to imagine their pain and only hope that the get the support the need. We can all learn from this tragedy and talk to our children about water safety. To those who have lost children I’m sending love ❤️

SquatBetty · 16/12/2022 06:35

This has really got to me too (probably because I have a DS of similar age) and I'm another one normally hardened to the news.

I think what's got me the most is that the boys thought they were just having fun, they must have been so excited to see the ice and ran onto it without a care in the world.

This is very sad to hear.

Your DF sounds like an amazing man
