Christening gifts for an extraordinarily rich baby when I am not extraordinarily rich?

Ostryga · 13/12/2022 19:55

Bit of a tongue in cheek title, but what on earth do I buy as a gift for a baby that already had everything before they were even thought of 😂

I am sadly not rich as fuck, so no silver rattles or diamond baby brushes here.

What is sentimental and able to be kept, but also means I don’t have to go to Tiffany?

An appropriate book, that you love, with a heartfelt inscription.

minipie · 13/12/2022 19:57

Doesanyoneknowwhattheyaredoing · 13/12/2022 19:58

A book.

piedbeauty · 13/12/2022 19:58

Yes! Books that you loved to read to your dc, or your favourite baby book from when you were a child. Meaningful and will be read time and time again.

AnyRandomName · 13/12/2022 19:58

A meaningful book with a hand written note inside (we received the complete works of Shakespeare for our eldest and I know she'll treasure it)

A newspaper from the day they were born for safe keeping until they are 18

The Peter Rabbit box set of books

I'm sure there are more, someone will be along with more

AngeloMysterioso · 13/12/2022 20:00

Minalima do beautiful illustrated books. And if you know anyone who’s a decent calligrapher you could get them to write the inscription?

PermanentTemporary · 13/12/2022 20:00

My go-to christening present used to be done sponsored trees from the Woodland Trust. I'd probably go for a book now.

PacificallyRequested · 13/12/2022 20:00

I agree, a book. You can get some beautiful illustrated/pop up papercut style versions of children's classics.

Floydthebarber · 13/12/2022 20:00

Something with nostalgia for the parents, assuming they are from the uk. Like a collection of Janet and Allan Ahlberg books. I had them when I was small and remember my younger brother having them read to him. I now love reading them to dc.

Ten Little Fingers, Ten Little Toes

Never not adorable and babies LOVE it :-)

Mumoftwoinprimary · 13/12/2022 20:01

A children’s bible. (It’s a christening!)

JenniferBarkley · 13/12/2022 20:02

A book is the best idea really. I've given Little Women for a baby whose late aunt (my bff) loved it, and a Roald Dahl compendium for another.

Also, for the time of year a Christmas tree decoration - Newbridge silver ones are about £20-£30, or you could get one with her and her family's names.

Brunilde · 13/12/2022 20:04

How old is the baby. One of my fav gifts was a clarks first shoes voucher. Yes we could afford to buy shoes but it was useful yet felt more personal than a random voucher.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 13/12/2022 20:04

You could get an ancient Roman coin for around £50

carefulcalculator · 13/12/2022 20:05

I would get exactly what I would always buy - a classic wooden toy that can be kept if wanted or not if not.

The wealth of the baby's parents is not my concern.

BirgetteNyborg · 13/12/2022 20:05

At this time of year a Christmas decoration might be an idea? Perhaps you could have it engraved with the date?

I gave this one or similar a few years ago

These are all amazing!! Thank you all so much.

I love the book idea, baby’s mum and I were obsessed with The Hobbit when we were smaller so that might be a good shout!

Agree with this - a legacy book from your childhood

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/12/2022 20:23

I bought both my granddaughters books their Daddy loved as a child. This went down very well.

Perfect! There are so many beautiful quotes from the hobbit that would be so apt for a christening.

Nb I don't think it needs to be a fancy copy of the book actually. The gift is the intent and the memory of you and your friend, and the inscription, plus the book obvs. It's not about fancy covers.

DD was given this book, it’s lovely to read to a young child
