What do you eat when you're poorly?

I've had a nasty cold and I vomited this afternoon, haven't eaten all day.

Put my DD to bed and told my partner I was going to try and eat some plain beans, no toast. Just beans. He thought that was weird, but it's helped make me feel better.

What do you eat when you're poorly?

Toast with butter or a buttered crumpet.
Tea with one sugar. I don’t normally have sugar in tea & I go completely off coffee.

I was sick 4 times last night due to a v strong headache. Happens to me every couple of months or so.

When you vomit you're supposed to eat bland foods. People call it BRAT

Bananas
Rice
Apple
Toast

So today I just had rice and as I kept that down, milk and biscuits later.

Tinned ravioli on buttered toast or crumpets

A juicy pear. It makes me feel so refreshed and hydrated and it doesn't sting your throat and it doesn't make you feel sick - it's a winner!

@Loobyloo68 my poorly eating is exactly the same as you, I don’t eat chicken soup unless ill then I really crave it, has to be Heinz.

I have had covid and flu and both time I struggle to eat anything at all. Eat anything you fancy. I like beans with chunks of corned beef in when I have managed to get out of only soup mode.

Homemade chicken soup

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/12/2022 10:36

My mum always gave us tomato soup when we had been vomiting and it seemed to do the trick. No idea why.

I have cream crackers now.

caringcarer · 14/12/2022 10:36

Chicken soup. My Mum always made me that when I was ill as a child.

lechatnoir · 14/12/2022 10:37

Heinz tomato soup with grated cheese on top. If it's a sick bug then dry frosties

Loads of you talk about chicken soup.....

Do you make it and if so could you share recipe?.

After a roast, I put the chicken carcass plus onions, carrots, celery, lots of cloves of garlic, peppercorns, salt, parsley and thyme plus sometimes some saffron into a large casserole and cover with water. Bring to boil then simmer for 5-6 hours, topping up the water as needed. 3 hours would do but the longer the better.

Then strain and freeze this stock, this is the base. Freeze some pieces of the leftover roast chicken separately.

Then when you want to eat it simply defrost, heat the stock, throw in some chopped leeks and carrots and some noodles and cook for a few mins, then drop in chopped roasted chicken just before serving to heat through.

Nothing! I feel so ill today that I can barely stomach weak tea. Absolutely no appetite.

evtheria · 14/12/2022 11:09
  • Congee (simple rice porridge, maybe with a bit of shredded chicken & chopped scallions, with soya sauce) but a trash version for when you can barely drag yourself off the sofa is half a packet microwave rice mixed into a cupasoup (creamy veg or chicken)
  • if throat isn't painful, stack of toast with butter & vegemite and a sports-direct mug of tea
  • chilled then sliced oranges, splurge on good ones because you are ill and they will taste like heaven

I make chicken bone broth by cooking the carcass left over from a roast with water in the instant pot. Either 12hrs on slow cooker or 30mins on pressure cooker. I tend to make it plain and freeze it in portions, so I can use it for various things.

Boiled egg, green tea are also favourites. If I've been sick, I would probably not really eat except sipping water and then going for something very bland.

Hot and sour soup sounds perfect for a cold.
