What age do adult children stop having their own room in their parents home?

I'm looking at our house which has got a bit full and chaotic, and thinking about whether to move things around/consider a loft conversion/move house.

When your kids left home, how long did you keep their bedroom intact with all their things? At what stage in a person's life do they feel adult enough for their parents to turn their bedroom into a spare room, or hobby room or whatever?

I will always, always welcome my kids, and am in no rush to have them leave, or repurpose their bedrooms, it's more that I know that sadly this will happen one day, I just have no idea what age it happens, so it's difficult to plan for.

When i moved out, my brother moved into my room within a week. The moment all my siblings left my mum downsized to a one bed property.

I’m 42 and still have a room in my parents house. They live in the country though and would never downsize. We all live quite far from each other so it’s nice to have somewhere to stay when we go home.

My parents redecorated my room the day after I moved out. 😂
Never been back to live either so didn't really matter.

My FIL was moving his computer into DH room before he'd even finished packing 😂

I still have a room at 45. I live 200 miles away, barely go up there, and it's not my childhood home. As does my 41 year old sister. Ah well, it's the choice of the parental units, bless them.

The day after I went to university! Same for all my siblings.

It depends. Daughter #1 moved into a tiny place. She had lots of lovely stuff in her bedroom here, but didn't have room for it in her new home, so 'her room' is still pretty much as it was when she left. It's just a lovely room filled with nice stuff, so there's not reason for me to change anything.
DD #2 pretty much cleared her room when she moved out, so that room was redecorated and became more anonymous. Both DDs now in mid 30s.

I'm unlikely to downsize any time soon, so that's how those rooms will stay. one I think of as 'DD#1's room' even though she'll not need it again.
The other was 'the spare room' but after a few sleepovers and the presence of a Peppa Pig duvet on the bed, DGD says it's her bedroom. Which is fine with me!

I left home at 18 to go to uni - literally the same day , one of my brothers moved his stuff in, I was barely out of the door🤣

One of my younger brothers left home 3 years ago but still likes to claim that it’s ‘his room’ despite only coming back to visit a few times a year. Another sibling has since moved back in and claimed it & brother wasn’t very happy🤭

I’m from a big family, room has always been scare growing up, so as soon as one of us moved out, someone would be waiting for the room on the sidelines. It’s only fair.

In DH's case - well he's 48 and his bedroom in his parents house is much as it was when was a child.... teen...,complete with soldiers on the curtains.

In my case - I went to university in the October, and my bedroom was repurposed and redecorated by the time I returned at Christmas.

In the case of my kids, just after the front door swung shut 😉

I moved out at 23 although my room was 'my room' until my DP downsized 2 years later.

My own DC have now flown the coop and have full time jobs. Their rooms are still theirs when they need them but one is now my office with a day bed for visits and the other is still a single box room with loads of DS's stuff still in it!
