A & E for blood pressure?

Posting here as more traffic than health.

Just that really. 35 year old female. Had foam treatment for varicose veins last week under local anaesthetic. All seemed to go well at the time.

Since then over the weekend I've had increased swelling and pain in the upper area of my leg where I had the treatment. Keep going hot and cold and have a dry cough that feels like a stitch at times. Went to see someone as the discharge papers said to attend GP if I had symptoms like I do.

I saw a clinician today. My bp was 170/139 and my pulse around 130. No temperature worth mentioning.

I've been dispatched home with some antibiotics as there is a chance of post operative infection. Was advised that if I have any more pain in legs or chest or cough up blood then go to A&E.

I'm just concerned about that blood pressure and don't know what to do. Leave it and see how I am after a sleep or go anyway as I'm worrying?

What would you do?

What did the clinician say about the BP?

togotoaande · 12/12/2022 19:04

That it was really high and he wasn't entirely happy with it. And gave me the advise about presenting to A&E if I get any worst

It's the fact I've got the pain in my leg though after vein surgery. That's what's concerning me

Because possible blood clot?

that clinician doesn't sound very thorough. Do you have out of hours?

togotoaande · 12/12/2022 19:11

@EmmaAgain22 yes exactly for that reason.

We don't have one that's still open at this time of night

They can do a blood test (d dimer) to check clots, as to urgency if need that now via a&e or via gp in the morning I wouldn't know, 111 may be able to advise.
I wouldn't mess with blood clots as they can be really serious.

EmmaAgain22 · 12/12/2022 19:14

I understand your concern

I suppose the symptoms of infection present much like the symptoms of blood clot

up to you. Ironically, it might be that the terrible weather makes A&E less busy.

SeveruslyFrazzled · 12/12/2022 19:17

I’ve been sent to a&e several times for my blood pressure and the GP sent me straight there both times… but I have high blood pressure and it’s been scarily high before.

If you aren’t comfortable with what the GP has said then I think you need to trust yourself and go a&e. You know your body best. In my opinion it’s always better safe than sorry 💐

Piscesmumma1978 · 12/12/2022 19:19

That is very high. I'm surprised they let you go.

Have you got access to a home blood pressure monitor?

I would definitely phone 111 to see what they advise x

LIZS · 12/12/2022 19:19

Can you call the clinic/ward where you had the surgery for advice?

EmmaAgain22 · 12/12/2022 19:22

Actually on thinking
not a doctor but if a friend told me
very high bp, tachycardia, pain and swelling in leg....I'd take them to A&E. the stitch like pain you describe concerns me too.

hope you're okay OP.

Coolcreature · 12/12/2022 19:22

Yes go to A&E I suffer with high blood pressure and that reading is a hypertensive crisis, 111 would send you to A&E. With your other symptoms, yes, go to A&E. No idea why you wernt sent there from your appointment!

togotoaande · 12/12/2022 19:22

@Piscesmumma1978 no access to a home blood pressure monitor sadly so can't keep track of it. I feel absolutely exhausted.

I don't want it to come across as as me speaking badly about the clinician as they were lovely and very kind. I'm just concerned

Maybe a neighbour has one? Good to ave a reading before you go.

mine went up to 190 something when dad was dying and we joked about me already being in a hospital if I keeled over - but actually it's not funny, the risk of keeling over is definitely there.

LIZS · 12/12/2022 19:25

Late night chemist?

cjh1969 · 12/12/2022 19:25

Do you know what your pulse and BP are normally? Pain can cause both to rise. If you haven't already, I would suggest taking some analgesia and if you have a BP device at home, recheck an hour after taking it and see if it has come down.

Did they tell you what to expect after the procedure, i.e. pain and swelling in the area?

If you have an infection, at least you are now taking antibiotics to treat it.

Coughing up blood can be a symptom of a blood clot in the lungs (hence why the doctor mentioned it). But you would also probably get chest pain and difficulty breathing if that were the case.

username8888 · 12/12/2022 19:26

Have you been having the anti clotting injections into your abdomen?

Coolcreature · 12/12/2022 19:26

@togotoaande ask friends. I'm only 30 so people wouldn't think I'd have a home monitor but I do. I'd lend it to anyone who needed i

abbs1 · 12/12/2022 19:26

Please please go and get seen asap. That is too high. I've been in several times for pregnancy related BP (and anything over 140/90 is considered high) but went in breathless and high BP and it flagged pulmonary embolism. Thankfully after being admitted and further tests were negative but don't take any chances.
I hope you get the help you need and recover quickly.

Piscesmumma1978 · 12/12/2022 19:27

If you're worried then definitely get checked.

Just say you've been worried since you got home and would rather be checked again. That was a very high bp. You're not wasting anyone's time or speaking badly of anyone x

Greybeardy · 12/12/2022 19:27

@Suzysuz d-dimer is not a useful test in the context of the OPs recent procedure.

schnubbins · 12/12/2022 19:31

Nurse here .Call an ambulance or get to an
A+E as soon as absolutely possible .You are not wasting anyones time.

lljkk · 12/12/2022 19:36

Phone NHS111 & do what they say.
