How cold does it get inside your house with no heating during the day?

I've always felt our house isn't very well insulated. We have the heating on for 90 mins in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. I wfh during the day and previously would stick the heating on during the day if I felt cold, but clearly times have changed.

It's now 15.5 degrees in the house and our thermostat is set to a min of 16 so the heating has come on (I'm pleased but prob need to reset the min!).

It's a 1970s brick built semi with replacement double glazing. It's about -0.5 outside and hasn't been above freezing since Friday. I'm just wondering if this is normal or do we have an especially poor house?

(Notwithstanding older or draughtier houses will be completely different).

Went down to 14.5° today
Dragging ghetto Victorian terraced house with double glazing and insulation

Heating has. Been on since now 4pm and the fire only just got to 17 ° 😱

PinsetAndTwirls · 12/12/2022 20:20

9 degrees, but it's an old and draughty house. Hence it stays at 9 degrees, because there's no point putting the heating on and heating the garden. I'm hardy and menopausal, so I can cope.

PinsetAndTwirls · 12/12/2022 20:21

It doesn't get above 12.5 even with the heating on. Hence no point!

Athenen0ctua · 12/12/2022 20:21

10 this morning before the hour heating as well. I think the snow is insulating at the moment, before Sunday it was 8 or 9 without heating.

Dragging ghetto house 🤣🤣🤣

Draughty Victorian m m, although it is a bit dragging ghetto in this weather

Athenen0ctua · 12/12/2022 20:24

I think it depends on the high temperature as well. I'm in a new build but 13 to 10 isn't a huge drop. 20 to 10 would be.

Now you mention it, I've felt warmer since being cocooned by snow!

Is dropping from 16.5 to 13 in 6 hours a big drop? I think my house is fairly well insulated, I get condensation on the outside of the windows most mornings!

RachelSq · 12/12/2022 20:32

Ours is 7 (60s detached bungalow). Putting the heating on all almost all day (at a cost of £25 gas/electric for the day) gets it to 12.

I honestly don’t know what to do, obviously the answer is invest a lot in making energy efficient but this winter is going to hurt in lots of ways.

BigBunkers · 12/12/2022 20:33

New build (built this year), haven’t seen the thermostat get below 16

Holeymoleymacaroni · 12/12/2022 20:38

It's been 14 the last couple of mornings. I don't remember it ever being that low before and we've been here quite a few years now!

Well insulated flat but I reckon the neighbours all around haven't had their heating on as much this year (same as us) so the whole building is generally colder.

lmnabc · 12/12/2022 20:48

4 degrees. Old cottage. Might make it to 10 with heating on for long enough

Suseal · 12/12/2022 20:52

10.5 when I got in from work, having the heating on for 3 hours got it up to 15, can't afford to keep it on any longer so that will have to do.

AdoraBell · 19/12/2022 07:57

9 degrees. New build with good insulation but the heating system packed up. It’s working now.

We came home from Holland last Sunday to a boiler fault. The temperature was 5. something. Truly horrible. How did we all cope before central heating?

DinosApple · 19/12/2022 08:18

No heating for last 2 weeks, new boiler in January. Coldest it got to over the last week was 6 downstairs and 5 upstairs. That's with a wood burner in the living room.

Today I've opened the windows to let the warm air in!

Gathering in a single room for the evening before taking hot water bottles to bed. My DGM and siblings also took the rugs off the floor and put them over the bed. We've gone back to that in a way by shutting the sitting room door to get that room warm, while the rest of the house is at 13. It's been good to be together rather than in separate rooms in the evening.

Mid century townhouse which we renovated and thoroughly insulated. Heating on to 23 for 2 hours in morning and usually stays up to 20+ during day. Heating NEVER on in bedroom we sleep in and window open during night. SE England.

We used to live in a 100 year old flat which got cold as soon as we put heating off. We were top floor. By insulating the loft (was a dirty job) it completely changed the feeling of our flat and it became a lovely, warm, lost cost (heating) home.

This is my second winter in my new build flat, & it’s never dropped below 19.5 degrees during the day so far.

Have you got a spare room? ;)

Sorry, only space for me & the cat! Good luck with your boiler, what awful timing.
