How cold does it get inside your house with no heating during the day?

I've always felt our house isn't very well insulated. We have the heating on for 90 mins in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. I wfh during the day and previously would stick the heating on during the day if I felt cold, but clearly times have changed.

It's now 15.5 degrees in the house and our thermostat is set to a min of 16 so the heating has come on (I'm pleased but prob need to reset the min!).

It's a 1970s brick built semi with replacement double glazing. It's about -0.5 outside and hasn't been above freezing since Friday. I'm just wondering if this is normal or do we have an especially poor house?

(Notwithstanding older or draughtier houses will be completely different).

(tiny Victorian cottage, no double glazing)

Notjusta · 12/12/2022 17:15

1930s detached - cavity walls filled where they exist, loft fully insulated and all windows double glazed except for external doors. It's around 13.5-14 degrees with the heating off - maybe a bit less in some areas of the house. The heating kicks in at 13 during day, other than for an hour in the morning and evening when it's set to 18. Gas cost £10 yesterday (includes 3x showers) so I am not sure I can afford to have it on any more than that!!

shreddies · 12/12/2022 17:18

9 degrees in the hall, which is drafty. I think it must be a bit warmer in the sitting room but not much

mylifeisamessymess · 12/12/2022 17:19

Early 80s detached house. Shit windows that have all blown, old garage door and external doors and conservatory with gaps between the door frame!
Heating turns off at 7.30am and by 2pm the house is 14 degrees.

RooBear9 · 12/12/2022 17:19

Ours was 14° earlier, put the heating on at about 4 and it's now 16.8.

missbunnyrabbit · 12/12/2022 17:20

11 degrees in living room, 8 in the bathroom.
You are all living in luxury! I dream of 16 degrees.

Orangebadger · 12/12/2022 17:22

Wake up to about 16.3 C when it was -4 outside. Never seen it lower than that.

Orangebadger · 12/12/2022 17:25

Should add 1930's semi. Double glazed, drafty loft conversion which is where our bedroom is, that would be significantly lower! But extension with great insulation.

WetBandits · 12/12/2022 17:25

8.9 degrees according to the thermostat 😳 my fingers and toes can confirm.

1850s cottage, badly insulated and, in hindsight, not the best purchase but I still love my little house!

DoubleNit · 12/12/2022 17:27

It goes to about 10 degrees when it's -1ish outside, our house is a 1980s terrace with original wooden windows. It's -6 here just now though and even with the heating on we're struggling to heat it up much.

TheHauntedPencilCase · 12/12/2022 17:27

We had no heating until a couple of weeks ago and were at 11⁰. It was milder then so I suspect it would go below that if we turned the heating off now, haven't tested it though!

PingPongMerrilyWithPie · 12/12/2022 17:27

15ish too. Unfortunately my productivity goes off a cliff under about 16.5.

I know why you're doing it but doesn't it seem a bit mad to spend all day working in the freezing cold? Wouldn't it be better to heat in the afternoon and have some residual heat left in the evening? Doesn't this whole concept of just heating morning and evening come from times when we worked outside the home and there was no one in all day? I bet none of us would be comfortable as managers telling staff to work in an unheated office all winter long, yet we do it to ourselves.

We have moved to a lower temp but more consistent through the day. We need to be able to function at our jobs.

MumofSpud · 12/12/2022 17:34

12 year old house (3 storey semi)
If I don't put the heating on it will go to 7.5 on the ground floor and 8.5 upstairs Confused

Jellycatspyjamas · 12/12/2022 17:49

I agree, I keep the house at a steady 18 degrees during the day - it wasn’t costing much less to turn the heating off during the day and I I was utterly miserable and unproductive. It took ages to heat the house back up to a reasonable temperature too while costing maybe a couple of pound less.

The heating is off about an hour before I go to bed and drops to around 10 degrees overnight, I couldn’t work in that during the day.

I’d rather pay the slightly higher bill and be warm and working, I appreciate not everyone has that choice though.

Livedandlearned · 12/12/2022 19:47

I've moved from a very cold house and have decided to leave my heating on a thermostat all day and night.

I absolutely love it, It never gets hot but nicely warm.

As we have solar panels the direct debit of £109 for both has built up a credit of £550 so I'm bloody making the most of it.

Ten years of being freezing was not nice.

As it is it seems to drop to about 13 when the heating isn't on. 1960s concrete build 3 bed, some shit windows, good roof insulation.

10in10 · 12/12/2022 19:56

7 degrees here. Big Edwardian house.

Lndnmummy · 12/12/2022 19:56

people picking apart an op and focus on something really small and irrelevant. They will ask something really passive aggressive. For example on op was annoyed at someone not rsvping. Que posters went "its not that difficult to cater for two extras, surely? Or "there is two weeks left op, plenty of time to get your nibbles, surely?

It sounds so patronising and unkind.

Lndnmummy · 12/12/2022 19:57

Sorry people wrong thread😅

Furrybutts · 12/12/2022 20:01

Shocked to come in this afternoon to see it was 13°

It's a new build too!

TheChosenTwo · 12/12/2022 20:05

Nowhere drops below 19 without the heating on, our house is a 30’s semi but we’ve basically ripped the whole thing down and rebuilt it and it’s very well insulated as a result. Ours is set to come on when it drops below 19 but I put it up in the rooms that I’m in to about 22 when I wfh.

Greybeardy · 12/12/2022 20:13

i live in a converted barn/outhouse and the bathroom has been 4-5deg since Saturday. It’s 8-10 in the rest of the house without the heating on.

BuwchGochGota · 12/12/2022 20:16

It was -7 degrees outside this morning and my unheated bedroom was at around 10 degrees.

Athenen0ctua · 12/12/2022 20:17

Mine was 10 when I got in at 5:30. I put heating on at 13 for an hour in the morning as DS was home today.

Cosycover · 12/12/2022 20:19

Mine was 9 this morning!

I could have started crying when I got out of bed.

Molehillfromamountain · 12/12/2022 20:20

It was 16 this afternoon after being out 9-3 the heating has been on for 3-4 hrs aiming to get to 20. It failed and it's now 14.5 and off for the
night.
House is part 1800s with 1980s extension. It's very draughty and has a strange layout which means there are very deep voids under the floor full of cold air.
It's about -4 here at the moment and will probably drop to -6 overnight.
