What would you take to keep yourself warm?
Winter boots, thermals, plus layers. Gloves, scarf and hat. Flask of tea (would take more, but toilet not available!) Fleece blanket.
That's doable, right?

I'd get out and walk to keep warm.

Sling a duvet in the back seat wrapped round a hot water bottle on the way there, then you will be toasty. It is warmer to sit in the back with your feet up under the duvet if possible as you'll be more insulated.
But for an hour it'll be fine

This, wrap the hot water bottle up in the blanket.

CMOTDibbler · 12/12/2022 13:41

@ChristmasTidyings if you are looking at heated coats, I have a Regatta one and it is fantastic for keeping you warm, esp if you have to stand/ sit. They are powered by power banks, so if you have to be around for ages you can change over to a new one. I have also got an electric handwarmer which makes a big difference when standing by a cold river waiting to see my son race.

Heated coat. DH has a heated gilet that he wears in the shed in winter.
How, just how have I never heard of these! Brands to look for?

I'm not that desperate @tanstaafl ! I'd rather go with turning the engine back on for a bit.

DH's was around £100 on Amazon and is a brand called Ororo. Other brands start from £20 so depends on budget. DH bought an extra battery too, but I don't think he needed it.

Namechangedforspooky · 12/12/2022 13:58

Is it swim training? We spend our lives sitting in car parks…

idonotmind · 12/12/2022 14:01

Or drive to a mcdonalds/Costa and sit there

well yeah 😂😂

SleepingStandingUp · 12/12/2022 14:01

Can you ask about waiting inside? I noticed at gymnastics that the number of people waiting inside rather than cars has increased since the summer

ChristmasTidyings · 12/12/2022 14:10

@Namechangedforspooky no, but another sport activity.
@SleepingStandingUp we're not allowed to wait inside, I have asked. It's not due to Covid, these rules were in place before. There isn't really anywhere to wait and they don't want parents in the changing rooms.

currently looking up heated coats. Santa, did you get the hint!!!

Tbf got can probably snuggle up warmer in your car

StickofVeg · 12/12/2022 14:22

I had to wait for DC sometimes like this - I would either take a hot water bottle or use the time to do whatever shopping was needed (but obviously you may not have this option).

pinneddownbytabbies · 12/12/2022 14:37

Are there any other parents who live nearby, who might take pity on you and let you go to theirs to wait?

I've got to say, I think the school is being rather unreasonable to not let people wait inside when the weather is like this.

tanstaafl · 12/12/2022 15:34

Gymnastics or martial arts ?

ChristmasTidyings · 13/12/2022 12:36

@Ch3wylemon does the gilet wash well/easily?

I'd just leave the engine on and heater running tbh. Idling doesn't take much fuel. As for the environment, fuck the environment, the environment is trying to freeze me to death!

Caspianberg · 13/12/2022 12:44

Electric car here. Just put heating on.
I had similar last week at Ds nursery. 45 mins car heater on at -5 outside, and it didn’t use any battery level up.

In petrol car I would just blast heating back on for a minute every 20 mins or so if it’s getting too cold. Car will start off warm from drive there so probably not too cold the first 30 mins anyway.

Unbridezilla · 13/12/2022 12:49

babyyodaxmas · 12/12/2022 13:37

This, wrap the hot water bottle up in the blanket.

Also agree with this, but I'd swap the duvet for a sleeping bag and put the hot water bottle inside. Tighten the top around your torso and the air inside gets lovely and warm!

museumum · 13/12/2022 12:53

I wouldn’t sit in the car. I’d go for a walk with an audiobook. Even if I had to drive elsewhere to begin the walk. I normally run while ds is at swimming and football.

Vegetablesupreme · 13/12/2022 13:13

No other suggestions to make op but I'm definitely getting a heated coat! Who knew such things existed!!??

Helpwithdaughterpls · 13/12/2022 13:17

Tallerthanmost · 12/12/2022 12:15

Engine running, heat on, audiobook to listen to.

why would you not run the engine?

@Tallerthanmost

Because that would be incredibly selfish, poisoning the air around you.

viques · 13/12/2022 13:23

Make sure you have something warm to sit on and insulate your back. There is a lot of air space in car seats, and they get cold, unless you have heated seats of course.

It'd be no different to going for a drive for an hr.

Not poisoning the air would involve an electric car. They warm up really easily.

FTY765 · 13/12/2022 13:29

If you really have to do it, get on the back seat with a blanket/duvet over as much of you as possible and take a tablet or something to watch a film/read/whaetver will distract you.
And layer up. Tights, socks, leggings and trousers for the bottoms, vest, T-Shirt, jumper, coat. Wear a hat and gloves.
Have a windowsill dehumidifier going in the car to reduce condensation a bit.

Kanaloa · 13/12/2022 13:30

I would probably just wear a jumper and a coat. It’s literally for only an hour.

Kanaloa · 13/12/2022 13:32

I wouldn’t be bringing duvets and hot water bottles and flasks and all that. Seems a bit OTT to me. But then I spend part of my workday standing outside for longer than an hour, so the idea of someone piled under duvets and hot water bottles in their car seems a bit silly.

Helpwithdaughterpls · 13/12/2022 13:32

@Tallerthanmost

I have neither the time nor the crayons explain this to you. I can only assume you're on of the cars who sits outside my daughter's school every morning pumping carbon monoxide into the atmosphere for the children to enjoy
