South London bordering Surrey, primaries are open here. DC were quite pleased as it meant they got to play with it on their way in!

It's quite ridiculous how much the snow affects the UK compared to other countries!

My son lives in Finland. Obviously they are really wellgeared up for snow. This year they had unseasonably late snow after everyone had changed back to summer tyres. Total chaos. What is normally a 5 minute tram ride home took him 2 hours on a bus. He had to walk the last bit after the bus slid backwards down a hill and crashed.

SE London and my girls were disappointed their school was open and they walk in Grin

School open here in London took my husband 3 hours to do the school run with all the delays on the trains. Soon he will need to leave for the pick up run.

Fleabigg · 12/12/2022 11:43

No schools closed near me - it was -5 when we were walking to school this morning but there’s no snow so all business as usual.

whyarentiskinnyet · 12/12/2022 11:48

Barnet schools closed, we were in the car at 8am before we got the message though so no lie in! Lots of work being set online which is a bummer for my DS

popandchoc · 12/12/2022 11:55

Hertfordshire. One child had an inset day anyway, other has gone to school but seems around half the schools are shut.

SongforWhoever · 12/12/2022 12:01

Local school here in south London opened at 10.40 for years 7 to 11 and closed for sixth form. The roads are not too bad here but the train line is closed and a lot of teachers could not get in.

I fixed your comment. Where I am the snow would have to be at least 9 inches deep before schools (or anything else) closed, and it wouldn't then even warrant a passing mention on the news. The local school did close a couiple of years ago when it snowed, but it was a few feet deep at the time. And it was open again the next day.

bluechameleon · 12/12/2022 12:54

My DC's school is open (Beds) and my school is open (NE London). Only 62% attendance today at my school though.

I agree. Schools actually close due to snow? Ok then.

50/50 here. Our HM is a determined person and has an hour's drive to school - if she can get in, then no one else can really come up with an excuse not to.

Surely it depends how people get to school, (car/public transport) what the roads are like in their area etc. The weather (and driving conditions) 1 hr in one direction from school might be completely different from 1 hr in a different direction

Echobelly · 12/12/2022 13:19

Our kids' (North London) is shut, mainly as it's on 2 sites and they said their concern is about the amount of moving between them in this weather. I know of another that's closed as a lot of kids come in by bus/coach/car as it has a very dispersed catchment. Oldest and their friend from that school are hanging out today.

Twilightstarbright · 12/12/2022 13:22

Herts town. All schools are shut bar one which luckily is the one DC go to as I’ve got a really important medical appointment to go to.

Hopefully they’ll be open tomorrow. I really felt for some families knowing they rely on school being a warm building and providing food for kids.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 12/12/2022 13:25

Son's school in Woodford closed. We are in Chingford and some of the roads are pretty awful with abandoned cars and crashes.

Well, perhaps she'd like to do the journey by bus with inadequately warm clothing, low quality footwear and after falling downstairs to mimic the efforts made by staff or children in poverty and with disabilities before she declares that as anybody with a warm car is capable of doing it, the plebs can bloody well stop moaning.

Do you mean England? Heavy snow alone wouldn't stop schools opening where I am in Scotland.

I live in part of the US that gets a good amount of snow, certainly more than the UK. One of the things I have noticed is that they are quick here to close businesses and schools all together or early if there is a risk the roads are unsafe, also have a lot of delayed starts to the schools. The plows and gritters and also out constantly from the first sign of snow. People just know not to take the risks and also know better how to drive in it if they do. Probably more disruption than the UK but it is expected and people just get on with it.

BedTaker · 12/12/2022 13:40

Looking Google Maps of my local town and the nearby motorway this morning, every road was either closed or orange/red/dark red. And that was with all of the schools in the town and the surrounding areas closed. If people had been trying to get to school on top of that, no one would have been going anywhere anyway.

But yeah, whenever the schools shut due to weather anywhere in the South (even though it hasn't happened for a good few years now) is because Southerners are such pathetic fannies Hmm
