Can you reheat porridge?

Stupid question but I’ve never done it. I made too much & put remainder in fridge. It is made with water - no milk. Can I just add boiling water & reheat? Has been in fridge since Wednesday.

I wouldn't, it would be solid

heldinadream · 12/12/2022 06:25

Put it out for the birds, they love it.

Choccolatte · 12/12/2022 06:25

Yes in principle. Just add a bit more water.

You can but I imagine it would taste pretty grim after that long in the fridge.

Rookriver · 12/12/2022 06:33

Yes I do it all the time. If you have/or drink milk, you could add a bit to refresh it. Otherwise use water.

panko · 12/12/2022 06:34

If you microwave it it will go into a slab you can cut into porrige bars when it sets again

JustCakeInDrag · 12/12/2022 06:37

It will be very gluey and the texture will be pretty horrible. Just make some fresh.

Christmaslover2022 · 12/12/2022 06:37

Yes I do, it lasts a few days in the fridge. Add more milk and water when you're re heating it

carefulcalculator · 12/12/2022 06:39

Yes just reheat slowly with a little more liquid. It would be fine so long as not gone off. Weds seems a while ago though...

PeopleRStrange · 12/12/2022 06:41

These answers are very funny. Obviously never heard of the porridge drawer. Granny used to make it for the week and just reheat.

That's real porridge that takes ages to make, before microwaves and fridges.

Mixed bag of replies. Thank you so far. Never heard of granny’s porridge drawer, that’s really interesting! This is ‘real’ porridge, made on stove from raw oats. Just out of interest, why would it have taken ages to make? I will have a read now!

If you had to collect wood to make a fire to make porridge the sensible things was make a lot I guess!

Betterthing · 12/12/2022 06:49

True! Just thought about that after reading the link. It did cross my mind to make this batch into a sort of flapjack cake slice thing. Hmm.

In the 1980s my dad used to make 5 days worth of porridge on a Sunday night then reheat it in the microwave each morning. It was always delicious 😋.

PrettyUpMyPorch · 12/12/2022 06:53

Came on to say about the porridge drawer! I put leftovers onto a plate and flatten it out, put it in the fridge overnight, then heat it in a frying pan with a little butter the next day. I call it a porridge pancake Smile

In the old days oats had to be soaked overnight but I'm not sure what changed...

Marshallislands · 12/12/2022 07:26

I saw a TikTok where a woman put porridge into a muffin tin and froze it. When it was solid she transferred it into a ziploc bag and then she just reheats one portion at a time by adding more milk/water, so I don’t see why you can’t do it from chilled.

Xiaoxiong · 12/12/2022 08:40

You can reheat in a microwave but you can make wonderful bread with leftover porridge! Especially nice if there's a bit of syrup on it or similar. If you look on instagram for #leftoverporrdgebread you'll find a reel from @5oclockapron which is brilliant.

I have the recipe memorised: mix 500g strong white bread flour with 200g (ish) leftover porridge (including the slops from bowls if there is any, since it's going to be cooked again and it's just my family anyway), and then whisk 300g water with 7g fast action yeast and add to the flour/porridge mixture and mix 2 mins, then add 5g salt and mix 5 mins. Prove twice and then bake at 220c for 35-40 mins.

dudsville · 12/12/2022 08:45

I did this recently, though with milk based, not water based porridge. I was reminded of my Dad talking so fondly of eating left over porridge so i did reheat it. It was absolutely fine. Waste not, want not!

BarrelOfOtters · 12/12/2022 08:45

Yes, the porridge drawer……

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/12/2022 08:45

What - I always do this. Shove it in the fridge and reheat in microwave. It never occurred to me that this wouldn’t be possible. Add a little more milk before reheating.

MajesticWhine · 12/12/2022 09:02

This is all news to me. Assumed it would be revolting as solid and gloopy.

catwithflowers · 12/12/2022 09:02

@Xiaoxiong that sounds intriguing! I don't eat porridge but am tempted to make some anyway, just to try the bread 😂😂😂

catwithflowers · 13/12/2022 16:42

@Xiaoxiong I just made the porridge bread 😃. Haven't tried it yet but it looks okay! Thanks so much for the recommendation!
