Strange activity as we are moving out

Has anyone had a fluffy of strange things happening as they disturb the family home for a move??

We've been here 15 years took a while to settle and have had a few odd incidents over the years, just loosing things, a few strange noises but nothing to suggest any kind of haunting.

We are moving in January and pre Christmas have starting emptying and boxing and now almost daily are getting items breaking, tiles falling off walls, strange noises, smells, cold areas and overall really unsettled feeling.

We've got to the point where my teens want to move out asap as the stuff is happening mostly in their spaces.

It's a very old house, but we are feeling like somehow we've pissed someone off.

Is this a thing am I totally imagining this? What can I do as we have a month and I'm awake now as items are falling off shelves.

House settling with the cold?

Well, that’s what I’d tell the kids while I counted down the days

Trace lodge for Christmas would be my solution!

You’re not imagining it, but there will be a perfectly rational explanation. As you box things up to move, a house does begin to feel different as you’re shifting around familiar things that had their set places. Also, as you move stuff to pack, shelves and things will creak as weight is redistributed and they will need time to re-settle. As for the cold, well it is freezing outside and you will notice it more in emptier spaces.

Cinderellla · 12/12/2022 02:47

Sometimes hauntings can be triggered by changes in the house like redecorating… I guess all the changes associated with moving could trigger it. Ghosts don’t like change…

And for some reason teenagers do seem to attract paranormal activity. I had a lot of things happen to me as a teenager that really shit me up at the time, it created a cycle because it was a negative entity that I think somehow fed from the energy of my fear…

You could always try burning some sage around the house and prayer to cleanse the area?

dieselKiller · 12/12/2022 02:57

There are strange smells? And it’s cold? Yet you have teenagers and it’s December?

SnowlayRoundabout · 12/12/2022 03:35

Of course it isn't ghosts or anything paranormal. The explanation is precisely what @zen1 says.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 12/12/2022 05:13

@Cinderellla I had lots of issues too as a teenager. The house we lived in definitely had something nasty residing with us and we couldn't wait to leave.

Both of my parents insist whenever any of the family move house that we make sure we don't close drawers in furniture and don't close zips etc on baggage so spirits can't travel with us. Nothing that I'm aware of followed me when I moved out.

I wonder if some teenagers are more sensitive to energy and spirits maybe some sort of psychic ability? It’s definitely something most people grow out of though thankfully.

never heard the superstition about unzipping bags and leaving draws /cupboards open when moving lol I can imagine it would make moving the furniture more awkward… I guess it’s worth it just in case though. I might do this in future! 😆

Stripedbag101 · 12/12/2022 05:42

There is no such thing as ghosts. Things get broken when you move. Houses feel bigger and colder as stuff gets packed up.

don’t frighten your children with this nonsense.

Absolutely. There are millions/billions of people who have died since time began so if there were such things as 'hauntings' there would be far more of them...with evidence.

weirdstuffhappenig · 12/12/2022 07:31

It's not me frightening teenagers it's them telling me they can small cigars, that's their guitar made a noise itself like it was being played, and that they can't sleep as they feel odd.

The fact it's both of them not just one as well, one is an adult, technically so older teens.

I just wondered if anyone else had felt or had a similar experience?

Thanks for the sage tips, I feel it would be good to take my DS seriously and it fob them off maybe getting them invoked would calm them?

Unless they have taken up smoking pipes or cigars in the house!

Yes.

There is a lot of change happening. It's cold and the house could be settling differently. Things are being moved and that means that the environment feels different. Old houses have odd smells with wood smoke baked into the fabric which as furniture is moved can surface again. You can find a rational explanation and if this helps manage anxiety then brilliant.

You could ask a priest round to give the house a blessing but two weeks to Christmas you would have to offer a lot of chocolate as we are super busy this time of year. I have gone to houses where weird stuff is happening. From the outside it can feel like anxiety but who knows? Standard practice is to pray. Praying a blessing may work because it reduces anxiety or because something that is lurking knows the game is up and goes quiet/moves on.

What do you need to reduce anxiety? Moving house is super stressful. If smudging sage helps go for it. If giving yourselves a good talking to about how old houses can be a bit odd helps get through the next month then great. If a DIY pray around the house praying for peace and light, a good ending and good beginnings in the new house then it costs nothing and no one need ever know.

Heliumburgers · 12/12/2022 08:12

You could burn white sage?

Heliumburgers · 12/12/2022 08:15

Sorry seen this was already suggested, yes definitely get then involved in the ritual. I'm sure it'll make them feel better being a part of removing any negative energy in the house!

Thymely · 12/12/2022 08:27

We have odd things happen sometimes, things fall for no reason, just odd things like a crash in the kitchen when no one is in there and a broken dish on the floor. A bang somewhere that is never identified. It could always be something was just standing precariously and eventually fell all by itself. I just say it's the friendly household poltergeist! Makes everyone laugh anyway.

Smoke can permeate into the fabric of a house, if you have been moving things around you may have released smells of cigars from many years ago.

miceonabranch · 12/12/2022 08:27

Teenagers perceive strange things because their brains are undergoing physical changes which can affect perception and cognition. Moving out makes a place feel and look different.

DrNo007 · 12/12/2022 08:38

Yes we did have something odd happen as we were moving out that I can’t explain. My now husband (whose house it was; I had moved in by then but we weren’t yet married) went into one of the bedrooms to take stuff out and even though there was nothing open (windows, doors) that could have created a draft and it wasn’t a windy day, the bedroom door slammed behind him, shutting him in the room, and then the door knob fell off in such a way that I was unable to open it from the outside and let him out.

He was trapped in there! In the end the removals guys had to break the door down to let him out. We all agreed that the house didn’t want him to leave (well I can’t blame it really as he is a lovely chap).

I do love your posts, and often wonder if I know you. I know several great, pragmatic women of God.

picklemewalnuts · 12/12/2022 14:28

Should add compassionate to that!

NewBootsAndRanty · 12/12/2022 14:37

The guitar thing is easily explained by strings expanding/contracting in the cold/as they warm up.

FrostyLadyBoutique · 12/12/2022 14:38

Aawww, a fluffy of strange things!

JustJustWhy · 12/12/2022 19:43

A "smudge of sage" should send the demons fleeing back to the underworld (especially those that travelled in your suitcase and closed drawers). I mean, why wouldn't it?
