Broken boiler, landlord not in a rush to fox it.

Ridiculousradish · 10/12/2022 22:52

My boiler broke late Tuesday eve. I let my landlord know early Wednesday. Told him I wasn't in a mad panic as shower is electric and have a few oil fiilled radiators, he said he'd sort it.

Friday I message him to ask if there was any progress, and he replied to say the engineer hadn't got back to him yet.
My house is 8 degrees (am lucky I'm in balmy Cornwall) and whilst I wouldn't be able to have the heating on much, I'd like to have the bloody option!

If I haven't heard anything by Monday afternoon I'm going to find an engineer myself. Do you think that's ok?

Fond the switch, it's on

Contained in the switch is probably a little section you can lever out with a small screwdriver to inspect the fuse. It would be worth trying to change the fuse. It would need to be a 3amp fuse though. Obviously the landlord should be helping but it’s so cold tonight. If you don’t have a 3 amp fuse it might be worth popping out and grabbing a couple tomorrow.

ivykaty44 · 10/12/2022 23:32

That’s good news

Ridiculousradish · 10/12/2022 23:35

Thank you for the advice @Wrongsideofpennines . I had totally forgotten about Shelter. Think I'll be sending him some info. I like the idea of offering to chase the engineer myself.

@Droven thank you so much, you are awesome for talking me through this, I really appreciate it. I don't have any fuses to hand but will get some tomorrow morn. Fingers crossed it's an easy fix. I'm going to get the electric blanket on and get into bed. Thank you x

Busiest time of the year for heating engineers.

The external outflow pipe freezing causes some boilers to shut off. Very common problem at this time of year.

socksandvests · 13/12/2022 17:16

Had to jump in here for help @Droven mine has frozen and shut down rec flashing light.
I've been pouring boiling water over the outlet pipes on the outside wall every 20 mins to try and defrost them.
What do I do next? Help! I'm bloody frozen 🥶

Droven · 13/12/2022 17:25

Do you have the same boiler? Blue oval light at the bottom and reset light flashing red? Does the boiler have what I describe as a gurgling sound when it tries to start?

socksandvests · 13/12/2022 17:26

@Droven yes and YES it sounded like bubbling water

Droven · 13/12/2022 17:30

look under the boiler to the far left. There is a white plastic pipe. This will be blocked probably by ice. The boiler won’t light until this is completely clear. It can take quite a bit of boiling water. Start where the pipe terminates and slowly work your way back. Get multiple pots on the stove with hot water first.

socksandvests · 13/12/2022 17:33

@Droven do you mean inside the house under the boiler or the pipes outside?
I have a gas hob so can only do one kettle at a time

Thank you thank you thank you for replying so quickly with this xxxx

Droven · 13/12/2022 17:35

Outside. Get a torch and try to see where it goes. Sometimes it’s an open gully and otherwise into a drainpipe.

socksandvests · 13/12/2022 17:36

Yeah that's the one I've been doing every 20
Mins - I will just keep continually doing it now - it's -7 here so defrosting isn't going well

Droven · 13/12/2022 17:38

You will struggle with it being -7 to be honest. Can you send a picture of the pipes under the boiler? Might be able to offer a different solution

socksandvests · 13/12/2022 17:38

Hang on..

Idontdoyoga · 13/12/2022 17:39

Could it be that the pressure has dropped and the pressure needs lifting? Look at the pressure gauge, the needle should be above zero.
That’s a simple thing to fix and can dtop s boiler working.
There will be a little tap to turn under the boiler that lets water in . Turn the tap, watch the pressure lift a bit and shut it off. Boiler might fire.
Google for the handbook. Read the trouble shooting guide.
Ring the manufacturer help line.
it’s a learning curve.

BTW. Do you know where your water main stop cock is?
Do you know how to turn your gas or electrics off at the main?
It’s always useful to know these things.

socksandvests · 13/12/2022 17:43

Ugghhh won't let me post one off my camera roll or a Live Photo ggrrrrr
Pipes are boxed in directly under the boiler though.

Husband now back home early from work so may pass this problem on to him 😂
He is currently mansplaining boilers to me ugh!

Droven · 13/12/2022 17:46

If you can get a picture to me I can give you specific advice relating just to your appliance. It won’t be general advice so I’ll send it to you via direct msg only.

socksandvests · 13/12/2022 17:56

@Droven I keep trying and trying and it won't give me a photo apart from random old ones and Live Photo isn't working either.
If you dm me I will try and reply that way.
In the meantime I will keep pouring water on the pipes

ittakes2 · 13/12/2022 17:58

Ridiculousradish · 10/12/2022 23:02

Yes please @Droven !
It's a 12 year old Worcester. The pressure is fine but no pilot light. Have pressed and held the reset button a few times but nothing

We also have had a broken worchestor since Friday - also rent. Our house is 11 degrees so you win. But it’s likely you need a part and it’s taking our part days to come so our pressure on him now!

Torteela · 13/12/2022 18:01

three cheers for @Droven!

ChizzleMeNizzle · 13/12/2022 18:01

@Droven, have you been sent by the gods? What a bloody legend.
