Non-Christians on Christmas Jumper Day

Work are having a Christmas Jumper Day and a festive meal with staff and service users. I would also like to wear something cheesily festive, but as I'm Jewish it wouldn't be a Christmas jumper. Would it cause offence if I wore a Channuka jumper?

My Christmas jumper is red & black and has a random sequin pattern on it. Any patterned jumper will do.

Jesus was a Jew, and anyway, Christian churches welcome those of all faiths and none. Nobody will be in the slightest bit bothered by your jumper, whatever it has on it. Smile

‘Christmas’ jumpers are just winter jumpers. I have never seen one with any kind of religious symbol on. Mostly people wear Santa, reindeer, winter trees, snowflakes etc. (Many of which actually relate to pre-Christian pagan traditions if you wanna get technical.) Mine has a famous actor’s face and a santa hat. Posh people wear Fair Isle sweaters.

If you go wearing a jumper with religious symbols of a different religion, that feels like an attention seeking statement, which it would be. I wouldn’t be ‘offended’ but I would roll my eyes and think you were about to have a very boring over-analytical conversation about the deep meanings of a season that’s supposed to be about keeping everyone cheerful at midwinter.

Thank you for articulating exactly my concern.

Of course I'm aware that Christmas jumpers are not of themselves religious, just amusing references to a Christian festival.

I might just wear my Channuka jumper during the last week before Christmas, when the dress code is relaxed and many staff wear Christmas jumpers, but not on the day of the festive meal.

There are some great Chanukah jumpers about. I chose a Christmukkah one for our work lunch as a middle ground and in fairness we tend to celebrate both anyway.

I am often tempted by jumpers with sloths on them. All year round. 😄

Wear one of those with some tinsel round your neck lol

Rachel Riley wore a jumper with two Christmas puddings on Christmas jumper day on Countdown this week. I think it’s fine to wear a Chanukah jumper, but perhaps a little pointed. It’s completely fine to make that point, though.

Of course not. People wear all sorts!

I don't agree with low use clothing and so have never bought or participated in a Christmas Jumper Day. If any of your colleagues were offended which I hope is unlikely, then your colleagues are the issue.

Crabbi · 11/12/2022 09:18

I’ve never seen a religious Christmas jumper! Can’t you just wear a normal Christmas jumper (reindeer, snowman, Star Wars, etc)? I honestly would never put Christmas jumpers in the ‘religious category’!!

Treaclemine · 11/12/2022 09:20

Presumably Jesus would have celebrated an early form of Channuka. Never thought of that until this thread.

Tuvala · 11/12/2022 09:27

I’m not Christian and I love my polar bear Christmas jumper. I wear it often in December. Wear what you like and makes you happy.

ConnieTucker · 11/12/2022 09:32

I have a religious Christmas jumper. It has the crib scene on it.

i think it would be lovely to wear a Chanukah jumper. Jesus was Jewish. The apostles were mainly Jewish.

I'd love to see that. I agree that christmas jumpers aren't religious! my favourite has a sausage dog with a cracker paper hat on its head. I never get to see Jewish traditions or culture.
I'd love to see a picture of a channuka jumper. Never knew that this existed.

BlindMedusa · 11/12/2022 10:07

I have Jesus with a Happy Birthday Cake for one of my Christmas jumpers which I love. Wouldn't say is seriously religious just fun, I also have a EFC Christmas jumper. My sons favourite one was where one snowman was holding up another Snowman with a hair dryer 😂 and on the back the snowman was melted.

I think your idea of a Chanukah jumper is wonderful and as previous posters have said, I think its great that festive jumpers have the variety now to be inclusive to whoever wants to take part.

My Christmas jumpers get plenty of wear, from 1st Dec through to 12th night, each year. Indeed, I am wearing one as I type. Not really sure I'd class that as 'low use'.
I wear my Christmas jumpers much more often than I wear my shorts, or my swimming costume, or my funeral dress or my smart suit, or that lovely outfit I bought for a wedding a little while ago.
I'm sure many of us have items of clothing that we don't wear throughout the year, and manage it without being sanctimonious.

PeaceJoySleep · 11/12/2022 17:35

I've had some of my Christmas jumpers for years.

I’ve had mine for 10 years! It gets work maybe 5 times over December. So 50 wears and counting isn’t all that low use, I don’t think.

That would be Yule, which existed for a very long time before the Christians stole it. Somewhat ironic that it would offend you for the original solstice festival to be acknowledged. 🤔

Atmywitsend29 · 11/12/2022 17:43

Ooh there's no religion association in my house, my DS Christmas jumper has Chewbacca on it!

A Chanukah jumper sounds lovely!
