How many kWH of gas have you used today?

For context:

Outside it's 1 C. Guess it was quite cold last night.
Small flat, and about 11 - 12 C in the flat over night.
Cavity wall insulation, single glazing with secondary glazing

So it started from 12 C and it's now about 18 C

Used about 40 kWH so far.

I don't know if that's a lot or not. Boiler is quite old so not sure how efficient it is.

Combi boiler so just used for heating and hot water on demand.

Not sure of exactly how many today (I'm out) but we are using between 90 and 120 kwh of gas per day. Depends how long we have the heating on for (I turn it off during the day, but we have very young children so I'm also trying to maintain a healthy temp) and depends on baths etc, obviously. Husband told me he had two showers the other day! Oh you enjoy yourself love!!

NewBootsAndRanty · 10/12/2022 13:48

43 from midnight to 12:40, central heating set to 18° throughout (1 bedroom flat)

cakeorwine · 10/12/2022 13:49

This is the first cold weekend in the house - normally at work during the day, so am looking at the Smart Meter - especially the cost.

Interesting.

Sounds similar.

This is interesting. 4 bed end of terrace, central heating set at 20°. Midnight to 13:52 - 43 Kwh so far today. Gas is only used for central heating on an old boiler - not combi.

NewBootsAndRanty · 10/12/2022 13:55

Yesterday having it on midnight to noon at 18 and then noon to 5pm at 21 came to 53kwh (was experimenting for the rest of the day seeing what it cost to heat my front room to 21 with an oil filled radiator and the GCH switched off. Short answer: my overall gas and ele came in about £1 more than usual for just over 6 hours).

My highest consumption this week has been 74kwh - set at 18° midnight til noon, then 21° til midnight.

Wow - but I suppose it's the 'starting point'.

Do you keep your house at a standard temperature all the time?

Mine had to start from 11 C this morning.

44kwh
Combi boiler. Ticking over all the time. Radiators all with thermostats
Double fronted 5 bed victorian house with extension

HappySonHappyMum · 10/12/2022 17:51

@cakeorwine We don't turn it off - I do turn it down during the day in the week to around 17 when it's only me working from home. Our house has cavity wall insulation throughout, it's heavily insulated in the loft and when we did our extension 20 years ago we put insulation boards under the floorboards downstairs, we have double glazing as well. I did avoid putting the heating on at all until the third week in November. So far heating the house has cost an extra £20 a week.

cakeorwine · 10/12/2022 17:56

I am going to try an experiment to see what happens tonight and tomorrow if I don't have it as low overnight.

I am glad that I am at work during the week.

I can't tell you today yet (no IHD atm and app takes 24hr to update) but can do yesterday - 49.3kWh for six hours. No room thermostat.

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 10/12/2022 18:00

So it's either on or off.

Three bed mid terrace, fairly old double glazing, fairly old boiler, electric showers and cooker.

Whyisitthiscoldalready · 10/12/2022 18:02

103.9 according to my smart meter

Whyisitthiscoldalready · 10/12/2022 18:07

Probably should have added, 4 bed house, 3 stories, 1910 build, mid terrace, no insulation AT ALL in floors or walls, loses heat faster than you can blink. Heating on 24/7 as it's -4°c outside. So far costing me £11 a day. We're on prepayment meters with one of if not the cheapest suppliers with no standing charge

Whyisitthiscoldalready · 10/12/2022 18:09

Double glazing, triple on 2 windows and 2015 installed combi boiler. apologies for all the separate additional information

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 10/12/2022 18:11

Don't worry @Whyisitthiscoldalready, I'm doing it too 😁

1960s build. Cavity walls, uninsulated. Minimal loft insulation. Hole in bloody ceiling above stairs 😂

Setting your heating to 18 overnight is absolute madness! We’re on heating oil so don’t know how many kWh but have had heating on for 3 hours so far today, house has fluctuated between 16-17, but I’ve been doing jobs all day so hasn’t needed to be warmer. Will put it on again now for an hour or so.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/12/2022 18:15

101 kwh yesterday. Which was higher than any day in December last year. But then it was -3c for most of the day. Think today might be going for a new record, but I have a cold and playing fast and loose with the thermostat.

We had it on about 12 last night - so might just try it a bit warmer to see the effect in the morning.

What temperature do people have their thermostat set to overnight?

NewBootsAndRanty · 10/12/2022 18:20

@Hollyhead yeah, crazy. Can't imagine why anyone might do it.

"If you can, try and keep your bedroom at 18°C when you’re trying to sleep (64°F) and wear warm nightclothes. Keep your bedroom window closed on a winter’s night. Breathing in cold air can increase the risk of respiratory infections."

My boiler is off overnight, comes on at 6.30am.

amyboo · 10/12/2022 18:47

100 kwh in a day seems crazy! I don't know what we use in a day but I read the meters every month. We used 352 kwh between 10/11 and today. Heating and hot water is on every day from 6-8am and from 4.30-10.30pm. Heating the house to 19.5/20oC and it kicks in at night if it drops below 17oC. It's -3oC outside today...

We had our cavity walls insulated in spring. It wasn't that expensive and we've noticed a huge difference. The house stays much warmer than it used to. One of us works from home every day in the week and we're managing without turning the heating on.

Nsmum14 · 10/12/2022 18:58

What is the cost of 40KWh does anyone know?

Hollyhead · 10/12/2022 18:59

ok @NewBootsAndRanty i did forget the caveat of people who needed to for health reasons, but a lot of people will struggle to sleep in a room that warm, I know I would. Healthy people in an averagely built home who have access to sufficient bedding and warm clothes don’t need to heat their homes overnight. It’s much better to save the useage for the day when you will actually feel the benefit.

@cakeorwine I think 12 is a sensible overnight minimum I think that’s what ours is.
