What do you use to clear condensation off your windows?

We have puddles every day that are half ice.

I'm dreaming of an amazing contraption that makes clearing it all a breeze and a pleasure… I imagine you're all doing to say towels and elbow grease! The bottom of the garden doors are the worst!

I actually had a massive anxiety dream about it last night.. that half the walls in my flat had gone like cardboard with pools of water at the bottom. Had a builder in to rebuild whole walls. I woke up just before he gave me the quote 😅..

RaininSummer · 10/12/2022 13:01

I got the Screwfix one for 20 pounds two weeks ago and it's brilliant

ClivePowermax · 10/12/2022 13:08

The only non-Karcher one on the Screwfix website is a Titan. Is that the one people like or is there another one?

BringOnAutumn · 10/12/2022 12:47

We have one. Doesn’t stop the condensation accumulating overnight 🤷‍♀️

Then it’s not a good one. I have one that can deal with up to a five bedroom house and keep RH <40%. Should be plenty capable for anything other than a mansion.

Do you have a link for this? Sounds like it's what I need.

This one, there’s a 12 and 25 L version too.

The absorbent tablets we had around the bedroom were less than useless, much like the Peltier ones that barely do a wardrobe. You want a decent compressor one that can then also help with air purification to deal with dust and disease and heat your room too.

schnauzerbeard · 10/12/2022 13:19

I have that dehumidifier linked above - can recommend. It will sort the condensation issue out.

ClivePowermax · 10/12/2022 13:26

Thank you! @Liebig @schnauzerbeard

This looks good - especially with the air purifying. Maybe I need to upgrade - ours is a few years old now and mostly used in the washroom.

Where do you place your? I have mine in the washroom, but it doesn’t help with the bedrooms/ dining room (with garden doors).

Filters are annoying out of stock right now, but I’ve had one on for three months and it still looks quite clean. It’s less effective at heating the bedroom right now as it’s sub-zero our, but when it was in single and low double digits, it was nice to have the bedroom clear of condensation AND warmed comfortably by the unit. Excellent for drying clothes too, way less hassle and cost than a tumble drier or drying outside when it’s frosty.

Should be good in rainy April and in summer for just filtering pollen (can reduce humidity too, just don’t have it on during the hottest day with all windows and doors closed like my grandpa had).

I’m in a two bedroom bungalow, so it depends on your situation, though having it somewhere central and having doors open makes it easier. You can set it to target a particular humidity level, or just constantly on. I move it from the living room to main bedroom or my partner has it in her study when working as it sometimes gets less heat from a smaller radiator and this is more efficient than an electric radiator.

Hallways in the day, the bedroom you’re concerned about at night. Everything should be bone dry, in fact, had to turn it off last night as my nostrils and lips were drying out…

No, I do not work for Meaco. I just kinda love this thing.

A vileda window vac! Was only about 25 quid from Amazon i think. Absolute dream
machine, i am using it several times daily at the moment in our shitty solid walled house. We are moving next year and I was thinking how odd it will be without the morning ritual of window vac’ing from oct to march!

This morning, I used a pair of pants from the wash basket. Luckily my pants have quite a bit of material to them and are cotton. Did the job very well...

DS informed me he'd been using his school uniform from the day before. Really helpful, as his washing basket is... right below the window 🙄

Everyone else in the house (and now DS!) uses the non-karcher-karcher (B&M £20) and then a flannel for any residue.

MarmiteCoriander · 10/12/2022 13:53

I have an older version of this: www.kaercher.com/uk/home-garden/window-vac/wv-5-plus-n-16332210.html

Comes with a larger and smaller blade, the vac, plus a spray cleaner for the windows.

We are renovating, so living in a single glazed, freezing, static caravan. In the winter I spend 10mins every morning- sucking the moisture off the windows. I've also used it when a drink gets spilt on the floor or if there is excess moisture in the bathroom/shower screen etc. Brilliant.

runlittlemonster · 10/12/2022 13:55

Ps there’s a technique to it, after 4 years I have perfected it like an artiste at work 🤣 the angle isn’t right to collect the condensation from the bottom quarter of the windows effectively, and when the tank is fullish the water sprays out of the vents if it’s not upright. So, I always start with the bottoms, and do these with the vac held sideways, left to right then right to left. Then, you can collect any little dribbles right at the bottom with a tickling motion, before clearing the main window sections in wide, downward sweeping motions with the vac held upright. At this time of year, i have to empty the tank after each window. What fun! 🤣

IwishIwasSupermum · 10/12/2022 14:03

Wouldn’t be without a Karcher, I find it extremely satisfying, there is a knack, I start at the bottom and work up, then if I can be bothered just wipe any marks or the edges with a micro fibre.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/12/2022 14:11

I keep my window vac in the bathroom, and vac the shower when I'm done, and then grab any condensation off the windows.

Mumrey · 10/12/2022 14:11

I have a ‘wipe the condensation off’ towel plus open the window slightly, does the job 😀

yesforone · 10/12/2022 14:18

I use laundry that is waiting to be washed . Towels, t shirts etc. Does the job.

Apollonia1 · 10/12/2022 14:40

I've had a Karcher window vac for years, and swear by it! I keep it in the bathroom and clean the shower and mirrors and windows after a shower and then open the window to let the rest of the condensation out. It's amazing for cleaning windows to a streak-free shine!

To the person who says they hate the annoying squeak - that just means you don't have enough glass-cleaning spray on. When the window is wet, there's no squeak.

I've a condensation problem downstairs, so bought the Karcher WV6 yesterday. Thanks for the recommendation of the dehumidifier too - I haven't had time to research them, but that one looks good.

Apollonia1 · 10/12/2022 14:43

Question - do you place the dehumidifier at the source of the moisture (Eg beside wet clothes hanging on a rack), or where the condensation builds up (on the cold north-facing window).

I have dreams like this too, but it’s huge cracks in walls - I normally wake up just before a major wall collapses!

Sounds stupid, but it works.....rubbing shaving foam onto the glass.
Rub it well so you have no smears and voilà, no condensed windows.

But where does the water go if it can't condense on the glass?
