You can no longer pass cash into someone else's bank account - am I the last person to know about this?

Tried to pay Ds's birthday money into his account but in case of money laundering, I wasn't allowed and had to pay it into mine and then transfer it across to him.

Apparently this has been a thing for a couple of years - the cashier said it was a real issue for their elderly customers who now have to come in themselves.

Just thought it might be useful info for someone.

I had to go into a bank last week and I get the impression that their main aim is to keep people out .

Yes, they certainly don't welcome you with open arms anymore, do they? It's often hard to even find anybody there - you feel like you've broken into a deserted haunted house or something!

There was a time when they didn't seem to want you in for everyday transactions, but they DID have salespeople ready to pounce if you wanted a loan/mortgage from them; but now, even with those, they seem to want you to do it all online or over the phone. It wouldn't be so bad if the people on the phones actually understood what they were doing and wanted to help you, instead of just reading from a script and computer-says-no-ing you.

I don't think it will be long now until the banks only have one branch left open in each large city or region - so maybe a couple of dozen across the country at most and none at all left in towns - and even they will be closed as soon as they can scare people away enough and then claim that nobody wants to use them.

There have been a lot of suggestions about shared banking hubs, but I don't think these have really taken off (maybe they've done this in a few isolated island communities?); or they could even do what the Post Office has done and set up a counter in the back of WH Smith's, the Co-op or wherever instead of maintaining their own premises. Maybe either of those would be shooting themselves in the foot, though, as they would then have far less of a financial excuse for closing branches, if it was costing them much, much less to run them?

One thing is for sure, though: once the bank branches go, so will cash. It won't be quite as quick in small family-run shops, as they will be able to still accept cash and then just keep it out of the banks (and save themselves charges) for their own personal spending (presumably still all legit going through the books, though), where their profits are their livelihood. The big shops, though: not a chance. Cash - as has been valued and coveted for centuries - will finally be seen as a burden and you'll actually get people groaning and sighing when offered it, instead of an online transfer, like you do already with teenagers now!

If they have clear limits and apply them to everyone, then they are being fair.
So if it's cash deposits up to £X (unless special arrangements have been made (usually for businesses, comes with a fee) then that is fair.

Yes, I was thinking that, too. It's not a case of refusing Mrs Smith the ability to pay in money but allowing Mr Jones to do so; either of them can pay in up to a certain amount but both will be refused over that amount.

My DP had this and got a telling off in branch for trying to put some money into my Halifax account. They are quite elderly and dont use Internet banking or transfers so went into the town to take money out of their account and went to the Halifax to pay in to mine.
The woman gave them such a telling off then almost bust a blood vessel when she realised they had my bank card and pin too 😂but eventually let them as a one off.
Mum spent ages after worrying they would get in to trouble for it

@MogHog - that sounds borderline abusive.

When did providing one of the basic services for which you exist become an excuse for elder abuse when they simply want to make use of it? It's like Tesco screaming at you for wanting to buy a tin of beans.

It seems to be a bit of a token attempt to reduce money laundering, not tackling those businesses which are alleged to be a front, such as vape shops.

We have a monzo account for this as I take a lot of cash for my small business;I can pay it into anywhere with a pay point machine (my local shop which is a two minute walk) and transfer it across to my account.

I pay my kids money in like this too including my daughters wages from her part time job as she's paid in cash (she's on the books before anyone asks it's just her boss is abit weird about stuff and refuses to even get a card machine for the business) and I just transfer the money across to my kids individual accounts.

Banks have had zero customer service for a while now ; your pointed to machines that only work when you do it a certain way and they don't have anyone around with any advice , it's all ' go online / apps '
Go in with any coins in bags and your looked at as if you have two heads
No wonder the branches are all shutting down

Customer service is officially dead in this country !
