You can no longer pass cash into someone else's bank account - am I the last person to know about this?

Tried to pay Ds's birthday money into his account but in case of money laundering, I wasn't allowed and had to pay it into mine and then transfer it across to him.

Apparently this has been a thing for a couple of years - the cashier said it was a real issue for their elderly customers who now have to come in themselves.

Just thought it might be useful info for someone.

Obviously should say PAY cash - where's the edit button when you need it!

I paid cash into my DS's account a few weeks ago, I used the paying in machine with no issues Xmas Confused

Fabvegetablegrower · 10/12/2022 09:17

Would it not depend on how much cash is being paid in. I can understand if it's large amounts of cash but not £20 for example. Sounds like common sense has gone out of the window.

Itsthewhitehat · 10/12/2022 09:19

I paid cash into dds account on Thursday.

£200. No one mentioned it was or would be a problem.

Ridiculousradish · 10/12/2022 09:20

Yep been going on for a few years now. I remember trying to pay money into my window cleaner's account, and the lady at Santander told me I couldn't because of money laundering. It was a tenner.

LittleBearPad · 10/12/2022 09:21

Yes it’s a thing. Bank transfers are traceable.

BooksAndHooks · 10/12/2022 09:21

Yes it’s been a while, my grandmother always used to pay any cash into the kids accounts for us from their birthdays. Our bank doesn’t even have a paying in machine.

Ridiculousradish · 10/12/2022 09:22

I hate the way banking is going. I rarely go into Barclays but when I do they want me to verify myself via my app and not with my card. Apparently it is in case I don't have my card, but I always do.
I just do my banking at the PO now as the hours suit me better

Itsthewhitehat · 10/12/2022 09:27

Sounds like it’s only certain banks.

can you pay the money in your own account and then transfer it?

Georgeskitchen · 10/12/2022 09:31

No I didn't know this.
I do remember however, the days when banks used to actually offer a service!!

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 10/12/2022 09:31

Yes, I bumped into this with adult DD a few years ago.

WimbyAce · 10/12/2022 09:59

I'm guessing if your child's account is linked to yours it is fine. Like mine has a lloyds young saver. But would be anyone else doing it it would be a problem.

Justcallmebebes · 10/12/2022 10:00

Nationwide wouldn't let me pay £20 cash into my DGC's account. This was 2 years ago

Benjispruce4 · 10/12/2022 10:06

I didn’t know this but rarely have cash these days.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/12/2022 10:09

I remember the days when money was the best means of payment but yes, I did know that.

narkyspirit · 10/12/2022 10:24

It has been a thing for a few. years mostly coming from the tellers themselves rather than a mandate, I have tried to pay cash into someones account and was refused but a few days later different cashier allowed me to pay cash to someones acc.

in the last few years fewer people have been going to the banks so they are closing branches due to this, reality is they are pushing people to line banking weather they like it or not

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 10/12/2022 10:28

Yes HSBC refused to allow me to pay cash into my Dh account. Went round the corner to the post office and didn’t have a problem doing the same transaction. Was £100. So not exactly a huge amount. Seems to be an individual bank issue rather than a system wide rule.

julie81 · 10/12/2022 10:31

I could not put money in my adult daughters Nationwide a few years ago. She changed her account in end as there were a few restrictive rules so does not use as a current account anymore.

Oblomov22 · 10/12/2022 10:42

Paid cash into both ds's bank accounts the other day. Cheques and money for their birthdays. No problem.
Cash laundering for a bit of birthday cash? Sounds like bank clerk was a bit of a jobsworth.

Blossomandbee · 10/12/2022 10:42

I see a couple of people have said Nationwide, I can pay money into my DS's Nationwide account fine and it's not linked to mine. Strange. Is it certain areas maybe?

Oblomov22 · 10/12/2022 10:43

Nationwide fine here.

cortisolqueen · 10/12/2022 10:45

I was told I couldn't pay into DS bank account & hed have to do it himself.

I told them that he's 7yo, in school, and as the bank wasn't open at weekends/after school, they'd be waiting a long time.

They relented & let me pay it in 🙄

Wonnle · 10/12/2022 10:46

I wasn't allowed to transfer money between 2 of my accounts with Nat West in a branch without ID !

I'd just paid a cheque into my business account and wanted to move some money to my personal account .

determinedtomakethiswork · 10/12/2022 10:47

It would really help with people gave the names of the Banks here.

EspeciallyD · 10/12/2022 10:51

Nationwide refused to let me pay £8 cash into my DCs accounts the other day. I went in there because I found a stash of old pound coins at home and needed to change them but they said you can’t pay into another person’s account, even though I have got a NW savings account (I couldn’t pay them into that because its one of those monthly savers and I already pay in the max amount). I only tried because the banks I am with no longer have branches here. I have switched to Nationwide now though as they do still have branches in my home and work towns and the staff are always friendly and helpful (they did change this cash for new coins for me in the end).
