Really painful lump down there, advice please!

A bit TMI I know but I'm really anxious.

Yesterday when wiping I realised I had a baked bean size lump in my labia, it has no head and is reddish in colour. I've never had any issues like this before and it is SO painful. I can't even lie down it's right at the top too where things are most sensitive and it's really sore. I've googled and have terrified myself because Vulva cancer has come up. Would it suddenly spring up and be this painful? Recent smear was fine, I have cervical ectropion but nothing else and I really, really, really don't want to go to the Dr about it, please help!

Can't even sit down that should say, the only thing that isn't painful is lying down!

Could it be a bartholins cyst? I'm not to sure what they look/feel like but know from reading here it's pretty common?

Suzi888 · 09/12/2022 22:48

Cyst- I would have a bath and have a better investigation and possibly a squeeze! They’re very painful.

My mum had a cyst very similar to this and was told by a doctor to have a hot bath, as hot as she could stand to get the cyst to burst. It worked and she got instant relief. Hope it’s that and it works for you too, otherwise a doctors check up is definitely necessary. Good luck!

Sprouttreesareamazing · 09/12/2022 22:50

I had o

ImOutOfTouch · 09/12/2022 22:51

A cyst as mentioned above. Mind disappears in a few days.

MissMaple82 · 09/12/2022 22:52

Bartholins cyst. Very common. Hot and cold compress and warm baths, they are very painful. It will eventually go though.

ladywithnomanors · 09/12/2022 22:52

It sounds like a bartholins cyst. They are quite common but painful! I ended up lancing my own ( I do not recommend you do this btw). Get a hot compress / flannel and apply to the area. This will give relief. Take paracetamol and ibuprofen. If it's still really painful by Monday i would phone your GP. Hopefully the compresses will help it drain.

trevthecat · 09/12/2022 22:54

Do you shave? Or wax? Could be an ingrown hair that's got a bit infected

pigonalipstick · 09/12/2022 22:54

I get these all the time and they aren't Bartholian cysts for me. I get them from ingrown hairs, or more often from friction, either rough sex, irritation from a sanitary pad or tight clothing etc. hurt like buggery for a few days then go

MrsMontyD · 09/12/2022 22:54

I get these occasionally, they disappear by themselves in a few days.

KM1991 · 09/12/2022 22:56

it does sound like a Bartholin cyst. I feel your pain! I’ve had 2 in 10 years. A wet, hot flannel helps or a bath with Epsom salts, cotton/loose underwear and loose clothing. Both mine settled within 24 hours after bathing.
I don’t think I’d brave squeezing, your eyes might water a bit 🥹 hope it clears quickly for you! X

Theluckoftheirish · 09/12/2022 22:56

I get that occasionally. Can be scary at the start. Highly unlikely to be anything sinister when it has come on so suddenly and is so painful.
A warm bath should help, but either way it should start improving in a day or two and just go away if it’s own accord soon.

I’d avoid squeezing it tbh, just in case it got more infected or spread.

If it gets worse or no improvement might be worth a chat with gp but should sort itself out I’d say.

AliceMcK · 09/12/2022 22:56

sounds like it could be a cyst, I use to get them they can be very painful and feels like they just appear. It’s probably been there a while but your only just noticing it, or it’s got infected.

First one I had was the size of a plum before I felt any pain, once my GP drained it I could feel instant relief.

I use to get two types Bartholin's cyst and another which was caused by waxing and ingrown hairs.

i eventually had an operation on my glad to stop the Bartholdi so cysts because I had so many infections with them.

Try and see a gp tomorrow.

Rolypops · 09/12/2022 22:59

Not a bartholins cyst as its quite high up near the clitoral hood. I'm in pain and been freaking out but it does look a bit cyst like, and I've been quite immobile recently as I'm injured so not as clean as I'd normally be. I'm just really hoping it goes away after a few days, I had an incredibly painful cervical biopsy a few months ago that I'm a bit traumatised by and just cannot face seeing a Dr about it. Though I will if it isn't gone by next week. Just can't believe how bloody painful it is!

Rolypops · 09/12/2022 23:00

The idea of squeezing it makes my eyes well up, it's just too painful for that.

OP posts:
pigonalipstick · 10/12/2022 11:21

Mine are always near the top OP, either above the hood or to one side on tip of a lip. They go away but they're a bigger at their most swollen/sore!

Ozgirl75 · 10/12/2022 12:28

I’ve had similar in the past - not sure if they’re a cyst, they’re more like a deep spot really. Some hang around for weeks not really hurting and then suddenly come to a head and hurt horribly. I put tea tree oil on the area and a hot flannel and they normally burst and the relief is immediate and total. The bursting does make your eyes water but it’s worth it!

tectonicplates · 10/12/2022 12:40

Another thing you can do is to buy magnesium sulphate paste, approx £3-4 from pharmacies, and apply it generously. It's a sort of drawing paste that brings a cyst to the surface. I remember the exact moment when it worked as I was lying in bed and felt this sudden release of pressure.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/12/2022 12:51

I had something like this after giving birth many years ago. The pain was awful. I got the shower head to direct water as hot as I could stand it and gently squeezed. It burst straight away. The relief was instant. It healed quickly and I've never had one since.

Sparklingbrook · 10/12/2022 12:56

I had one of those for Christmas years ago. I remember getting the bus into town and felt every bump, sooo painful. I tried to get DH to give it a squeeze but he wasn't keen. Sad
I tried the hot baths etc, but it wasn't going anywhere so I booked a GP appointment, IIRC it snowed and I couldn't get there but then it just popped of it's own accord and that was it.

Sausagedognamedmash · 10/12/2022 13:01

Definitely sounds like a cyst to me. I've had quite a few over the years. A hot bath, compress etc should bring it to a head. However if it still hurts and hasn't burst by Monday, call the doctor. I've had to have a number lanced at the GP and one or two under GA in hospital due to the depth of infection. I have a really low immune system and seem to be prone to random skin abscesses, those in the genital area are definitely the most painful.

Rolypops · 10/12/2022 14:18

I'm so relieved this doesn't seem to be hugely uncommon! I don't know how I would burst it though as there is no head to it, its just a really painful red lump! I'm going to try the hot compresses and thanks for the tip about magnesium will definitely give that a go too. Desperate to avoid the GP if at all possible.

stillvicarinatutu · 10/12/2022 14:42

See a gp - I had an infected BC and I've never been in such pain! I ended up in emergency surgery.

You have my sympathies

Rolypops · 10/12/2022 22:31

Oh my god for all those who advised the boiling hot compress thank you so much. I got out of the shower and let's just say the problem resolved itself in a super disgusting way Grin. You have literally saved me from so much unpleasantness.

Just hoping it doesn't get infected now as there was quite a lot of blood, think it was a little bit bigger and deeper than I thought but it was instant relief. I might sleep tonight after all!
