I love crafting, but I'm on a low budget and I don't have a dining table or desk to sit at, so it's either use the coffee table or kitchen work surface. I also have cats who like to get involved!

I've tried diamond painting, but didn't enjoy it. Can't do jigsaws as the cats knock the pieces on the floor and I'd have to pack it away every day. I'm not artistic. I used to knit and tried to learn to crochet, but I hate making large things and don't like knitting small toys or things that need stuffing. I have a kit to make a mini house but there are so many pieces, none labelled, it's very complicated.

Just thought maybe someone had a craft hobby that I might enjoy?

Cross stitch!

BareBelliedSneetch · 09/12/2022 22:02

Embroidery! There are some lovely little starter kits with hoops and everything included, even the needle. Easy to pack away too.

LadyLaLaa · 09/12/2022 22:08

Slow-stitching? If you've got some fabric cutoffs and some needle and thread your good to go. It's great for mindfulness and relaxation too 😀

My first thought was cross stitch too, like pp says about embroidery, there are starter kits, which you could use as a taster. Enjoy!

Sashiko! It's so portable and so beautiful. Look up the shop Japan crafts, there's lots of YouTube too. It's basically a big running stitch wiry thick cotton thread on dark fabric and it makes fantastic patterns. Not much skill involved but turns out really well

Coxspurplepippin · 09/12/2022 22:16

Cross stitch, origami, crochet granny squares then sew or crochet them into a blanket. Scrapbooking, drawing, patchwork/quilting, rag rugs, calligraphy.

Colouring in. Theres loads of books even adult colouring in books at The Works for a couple of quid. Easy to do without much concentration in front of the telly. Feels a bit nostalgic to me to do it on the coffee table on a Sunday afternoon.

There are jigsaw apps which are quite satisfying and the cats can't wreck! I use jigsaw hd but there are others. This one gives a lot of freebies away, so not expensive if you're careful!

stayathomer · 09/12/2022 22:21

Colouring here too, or scratch art! Hope you find something op!!

Quilting! Improv quilting with lots of little bits. Paper piecing.

Moon22 · 09/12/2022 22:22

Crochet or knitting. Start by getting cheap supplies from the pound shop or the range. Watch free videos on you tube. Do it in bed or on the sofa, on the bus, wherever! Very portable.

NauseousNancy · 09/12/2022 22:23

Macrame! I made some little Christmas tree decorations that were so simple and quick.

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 09/12/2022 22:28

Thanks for the replies.

I don't have a sewing machine, and wouldn't know where to start with quilting 🤷‍♀️

I've tried Origami, but always reach a point where I can't understand what I'm meant to do!

I've looked at cross stitch, but most of the kits are very twee, but my kind of thing. Any suggestions for budget kits that are a bit different?

Origami is my favourite low starting cost craft.

I generally like modular/repeating things.

You'd need a tray and it's better to get some reasonable quality paper because it's easier to fold crisply.

Animals etc have never really been my bag, I've always preferred the stuff above or boxes etc.

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 09/12/2022 22:29

I've never tried macrame, I'll look into that. I kind of thought it was just plant pot holders, and I've nowhere to hang any, but will look into Christmas decorations, any suggestions where to start, kits, websites?

Have a look at some "quilt as you go" videos on YouTube. You can use scraps of fabric, add embroidery and each block is a complete work of a manageable size which can be stitched together to make a larger piece of work.

I just don't know what to knit or crochet. I can knit well, but get bored quite easily.

Oh and have a look in charity shops for craft supplies.

gogohmm · 09/12/2022 22:35

If you are a good knitter, why not make your hobby pay - there's agencies that seek knitters to knit jumpers basically

RagingWoke · 09/12/2022 22:35

I have a fab feminist cross stitch kit from Amazon. I can't remember how much exactly but it was about £15 and comes with plenty of supplies.

Boots also have craft kits on 3 for 2.

NauseousNancy · 09/12/2022 22:37

I made these last year - really easy!

Sock knitting. Small, portable, wearable.

NauseousNancy · 09/12/2022 22:38

I bought everything from Amazon.

BlessMyCottonSocks · 09/12/2022 22:39

Needle fearing?

BlessMyCottonSocks · 09/12/2022 22:39

Felting, not fearing!
