Netflix movie recommendation for 6 year old

Planning to have a movie afternoon tomorrow for DD and me. She is six but she scares easily. Extremely easily. and if anything scares her then she will refuse for the next few days to leave my side. As in she won't even be able to go to the toilet on her own let alone sleep.

a few examples of what scares her: paw patrol scares her even though She loves it. As do some episodes of Ben and holly and Peter Rabbit. With Paddington she started crying (though I admit that Nicole Kidman's character was freaky). Lion king (new) we didn't even get beyond the trailer. For some reason she's ok with Frozen so we keep watching that. Something along the lines of Peppa Pig but a movie.

She wants to see Moana but I've heard there is a scary underwater scene. How bad is it?

I'd be very grateful for suggestions. It doesn't have to be netflix though I'd be very happy if I don't have to pay for it.

Thank you so much!!

My DD was the same. Couldn’t even get through Frozen and was terrified by Brave. Even Octonauts was too much once they went into the deepest ocean. The films she loved were the Tinkerbell ones, but even then had to be cuddled through certain teeny bits of extra mild peril.

See if you can find Tinkerbell x

WhippetyWhop · 09/12/2022 20:26

Good idea. Thank you!! She does love Tinkerbell. We haven't seen the movie but we've got a little book with an abridged version.

Our DDs sound alike. Mine also gets scared by the ocean (or a picture of it). Also big ships and boats (in books, on screens and in real life). Sometimes it's really random things.

The films are really sweet. The songs are nice too.
Mine is 13 now. Couldn’t do ‘movie day’ throughout primary school. But now loves Greek mythology and leaning towards gothic horror!

LittleBearPad · 09/12/2022 20:29

The Tinkerbell films are very sweet and worked for my own worrier.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/12/2022 20:31

Studio Ghibli. They're all good but not all for 6 yo.

DD had a complete sob-fest at Land Before Time at that age!

Longwhiskers · 09/12/2022 20:31

Mine is a bit like this at 5. Howls at anything sad and doesn’t like scary. I had to turn of the original Ariel as she couldn’t cope. She has always sat through and loved the studio gibli films like my neighbour totoro. They’re v weird but lovely!

parrotonmyshoulder · 09/12/2022 20:36

Oh yes, Totoro was an early hit. But not Spirited Away! Too scary!

Be careful in a few years… once the Harry Potter phase started, she loved the books (audio at first as could read till 8), but the Chamber of Secrets stopped her going to the loo alone for a couple of years!

parrotonmyshoulder · 09/12/2022 20:37

I’m just reminding DD of how scary she found the Magic Faraway Tree. She just rolled her eyes and tossed her hair at me, but I remember!

WhippetyWhop · 09/12/2022 20:39

There are so many Tinkerbell movies. I had no idea. And the first movie is the most expensive option of course. Sigh.

I couldn't find them on Netflix. But I can never find any movie I'm interested in on Netflix. I don't really use it so maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Awww...

The chamber of secrets is the only harry potter book that I found a bit scary (and I was in my twenties when I read it!!)

No, it isn’t in the slightest bit scary!

I just looked up studio Ghibli and realised that i ve seen princess mononoke and spirited away. It was a long time ago but I think they are way too scary for DD.

I wonder if a non cartoon might be a better option. Something about friendships or dancing maybe but with no adventure. Not even mild peril.

Kiki’s delivery service is adorable.
And Ponyo. She won’t hate Ponyo.

I think my DD found live action harder because it was more believable maybe.

The Nativity movies are good.

ladygindiva · 09/12/2022 20:49

Vivo on netflix is a fabulous film. My 6 yo twins loved it.

parrotonmyshoulder · 09/12/2022 20:50

Malory Towers series on BBC.
I’ll stop now!

mynameischloe · 09/12/2022 20:51

What about a Julia Donaldson marathon rather than a film? Snail and the Whale, Stickman etc.

MyDearAcquaintance · 09/12/2022 20:52

One of the Barbie movies will probably be OK for her (they are as bad as you might think!).

There's also My Little Pony Movies.

MyDearAcquaintance · 09/12/2022 20:53

They aren't as bad as you might think!!!

WhippetyWhop · 09/12/2022 20:54

All great suggestions. Thanks so much everyone!!

Haha. I've just seen that there are Barbie movies on Netflix. Yeah not a fan of Barbie though I agree that they are unlikely to be scary.

My little ponies sounds good!!

I am reminded of an interview I saw with Nicole Kidman where she described excitedly telling her children "Mummy's going to be in a lovely movie for children acting with a lovely cuddly teddy bear from Darkest Peru!" "Ooh! Who do you play Mummy? Are you the teddy bear's friend?"

.......long pause......
"and then I realised, my children can never see this movie"
