The interior of my car front & rear windows was iced up today & the rear doors were frozen shut too!

This is in the south east. I need a car cozy. Anyone else have car trouble?

I am going to try the hot water bottle trick tonight --- thank you for that.
My car also freezes inside. No garage, just left on a drive.

On leaving work we have to use our pass to raise the barrier. Yesterday my car windows were frozen shut, so I had to get out of the car to use the pass!

It is minus 3c here in the midlands, says it feels like minus 6c on my weather app.

Have we been spammed by the Ford marketing board? Surely all makes of car have a heated windscreen? Or does Ford have something magical?

Warm water, not hot. I've been doing this for years and not had any problems

Me too. Every winter for 25 years. Just warm water from the tap.

Mine does not... really wish it did after reading these comments!

BreakingPointAgain · 09/12/2022 08:12

Ford do have something magical, a patent!

I think (maybe?) that poster meant they are available in other makes of cars - usually in the more expensive specs - rather than every car has one. One of our previous cars had one (not Ford) and it was the absolute best thing ever.

Ford have a patent for a special heated windscreen, the same as how the rear window demists, ford windscreens do it too.

That's still not enough to make me buy a Ford, but it's pretty cool 😉

user1634987 · 09/12/2022 08:34

I think more new cars do have the heated windscreen now, something to do with the patent, probably it's expired but they seem to be more expensive cars whereas my fairly low spec 2016 Fiesta has it, my previous 2009 Fiesta also had it not just the expensive Fords

CharityShopChic · 09/12/2022 08:38

I used to get this in one of my previous cars, the back doors always froze in cold weather. A kettle of warm water trickled over the lock slowly was enough to defrost. Also make sure that your windscreen is clean on the inside, attack it with windowlene and loads of kitchen paper. I was always told the worst thing you can do is to wipe off condensation or water with your hand/sleeve,

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned the old hot water in a sandwich bag trick? It's genius and saves your fingers from scraping!

My wife does that, I just use the scraper. We have a relatively new Volvo V 60, which doesn't have a heated windscreen. The Passat and the V 70 we had previously both did. And heated wing mirrors.

Blackisthecolour · 09/12/2022 08:42

My landrover also has heated screens though, and mirrors so can't just be uniwue to Ford. I can prewarm through an app so it's all defrosted and warm before I get in (doors still locked). It's one of my favourite things about my car but I feel a bit of a twat when my neighbours are all scraping their cars and I can just get in mine and drive away.

Blackisthecolour · 09/12/2022 08:42

Unique even!

CrownTheTurkey · 09/12/2022 08:49

I put a couple of four pint milk bottles filled with hot water on the dashboard 30 mins before getting in the car.
It melts the frost etc lovely.
I then put one on my knee until the car has warmed up.

Boooooot · 09/12/2022 09:00

I just use the cans of de icer that you spray onto the windows it melts the ice instantly. I’ve never had ice INSIDE my car though?!

I don’t think it’s specific to Ford - we had a Seat Alhambra many, many moons ago and it had a heated windscreen.

NellieJean · 09/12/2022 09:57

Get a car cover. Takes about a minute to put on and even less to take off.

Eyesopenwideawake · 09/12/2022 10:02

When you stop at night run your window wipers and turn the engine off when they are mid 'swipe', front and back. Lift them up and put newspaper underneath, the wipers will keep in in place. Voila - no ice in the morning!

mondaytosunday · 09/12/2022 10:21

I should anticipate it but I go out same time, always in a bit of a hurry and dismayed to see the car covered in ice and needing scraping. I'm sure I've bought a few scrapers over the years but can I lay my hands on it when I need it? Never.

AdobeWanKenobi · 09/12/2022 10:22

deplorabelle · 09/12/2022 07:29

Doing this on a petrol car is antisocial and disgusting. Our neighbour used to leave his diesel van running to warm it up and the fumes would leak in through our airbricks.

How do you know she has neighbours?

it’s not Ford unique. I have a 2010 Landrover with a little ice symbol on the dash that turns on both front and rear heated screen, heated mirrors and blasts air up the screen. Clears it in about five minutes.
And no, I don’t have neighbours.

my neighbour did this yesterday and the paper froze to her windscreen and turned into paper mache! She ended up being half and hour late for work.

Not the best idea - if it rains or the windscreen is damp and then it freezes, the paper will freeze on the glass.

It happens if the car isn't dry (wet dogs, wet coats, damp seats) and it then freezes overnight.

ilovebagpuss · 09/12/2022 11:36

I usually do the warm water and then follow with a quick spray from the de Icer so it doesn't just freeze over again, then sit for 5 mins running the car before we have to go.
I don't like running the car when it's stationary but It's the best way to get going I have found.

jhdvnktd · 08/12/2022 20:48

This is normal right? It's called a frost and happens every winter, I'm not sure why you're surprised 😂

Not on the inside of the windows!

OP posts:
Abraxan · 09/12/2022 20:30

Normal every year here.

Fortunate that I have an app for my (electric) car and can turn the heating on before I get it, which also defrosts the windows.

Before that I used to turn my engine on, on my drive, for a few minutes before I needed to leave. I locked the car using my spare key. I know leaving the car to idle isn't great, but I'd have had to do the same before driving off anyway as de-iced can only do so much.
