This is in the south east. I need a car cozy. Anyone else have car trouble?

How cold was it? Mine wasn’t even frosty in Scotland and it was showing -1C at 8am!

NotDonna · 08/12/2022 23:27

minus 3 down south at 7.30am

fill a hot water bottle and put on your dash board before bed then redo it half hour before needing to leave

@Mummapenguin20 you might be my new favourite person for that tip!

GetOffTheRoof · 08/12/2022 23:29

Yep, I was scraping the car at 0700 this morning in -3c. In Cornwall.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 08/12/2022 23:29

My windshield protector froze solid to the windshield. I put it on last night to save having to piss on this morning de icing my car. Ended up being half an hour late for work. Needless to say the bloody thing is stopping off tonight!

GreenLunchBox · 08/12/2022 23:19

I just pour warm water on the windscreen. No scraping needed

Please don't do this if the water runs off onto a pavement or road
I live on a road where someone does this and it runs over the street meaning I have to walk and drive over it and it's lethal in the dark because it just freezes

MadameMackenzie · 08/12/2022 23:37

My rear window will no longer close fully :(

Japanesejazz · 08/12/2022 23:38

Good thing you poor little snowflakes weren’t having to break ice on water troughs for livestock this morning
obviously nothing to do with the little plastic packages of things you buy in the supermarket, labelled as anything except animal, which we were keeping alive this morning

Benefit of an EV I can set the heater going from an app on my phone - while I'm still in bed if need be

I can do this on my petrol car! & start the engine. Being a Ford means it also has a heated windscreen which is a godsend in the morning

What do you want? A medal? Wrong place for that. Might want to start your own thread bitching about farming and animal welfare.

Lucked · 08/12/2022 23:46

I made sure to have a heated windscreen in my new car. In Scotland so it gets plenty of use, it is so satisfying to watch it all melt away and the mist clear.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/12/2022 23:50

One of my colleagues in Boston could start her car engine with her key fob from the office which was very handy when the freezing rain had coated it like a frozen prawn during the day.

the answer is really very simple, you just put it in your garage
Don't be silly, garages are for storing anything and everything except cars.

We’re a bit more prepared over here. Majority of vehicles have block heaters that you plug in. DH has a plug-in battery warmer as well. A lot of vehicles have auto-start, so you can set them to run (doors locked) 15 minutes or so before you leave, without having to go outside.

Pouring water, warm or hot, isn’t going to work here. It would freeze in mid-air. I give you the temperature at 7am on Tuesday. This is Celsius, not Fahrenheit.

Yes , first proper frost for ages , we've been spoilt with mild winters , cold spell needed to kill off the germs

Yep. My old GP used to say "green winters fill the graveyards". We need a hard frost.

PronounsBaby · 09/12/2022 00:08

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned the old hot water in a sandwich bag trick? It's genius and saves your fingers from scraping!

Where do you live ?? Makes us moaning about -3 seem embarrassing now 😆

And me! I bought a Ford car so I could have a heated front windscreen! I used the app on my phone to start it from my bedroom while I was getting dressed - windows clear and toasty warm inside when I was ready to leave. The car is totally secure, doors are still locked even though engine is running and even if some one did break in, the engine stops when the door is opened and the key is needed to start the car.

Sometimes technology really is amazing!

Northern Alberta, Canada. It’s warmed up to a balmy -12 today!

I was going to guess Saskatchewan 😁

Nat6999 · 09/12/2022 02:41

Buy a Ford, they have heated front screen, tur it on as soon as you get in the car, 2 minutes later the wipers can wipre the remains off the screen, as soon as you have done the side windows you are done.

user1634987 · 09/12/2022 04:30

Yes I have a Ford, one of the reasons I bought it was the heated front screen, it is also good this time of the year when you get in the car later on after going out and it isn't frozen but all mists up when you get in it because it is so cold.

Doing this on a petrol car is antisocial and disgusting. Our neighbour used to leave his diesel van running to warm it up and the fumes would leak in through our airbricks.

thelobsterquadrille · 09/12/2022 07:35

Mine has a heated windscreen so it only takes 2-3 minutes to defrost. It's currently -3 here and I can see my car is absolutely frozen solid 🥶

pinkfondu · 09/12/2022 07:37

AnyFucker · 08/12/2022 23:23

If it is really cold the poured water just freezes again

I risk getting wet by using the wipers as quick as possible or even getting on the kids to do it.
