Having just been to Aldi with my dad Grin
He was "oh you've spent a lot"
Me "not really, £57"
Him Confused "we aren't at the till yet! Your Nan used to do that"

I don't do it to the penny, and I'm not so skint I can't find another fiver but I need to know approximately so I don't spend masses

So do you calculate or just get to the till and it's a surprise?

No, I find out at the till, and then am normally cats bum face about it.🙂

Kazzyhoward · 08/12/2022 13:08

It's something I always do. Saved me a lot of money when they try to over-charge me at the till when they accidentally swipe something twice or the till doesn't apply at 2for1 or BOGOF offer or the shelf edge offer price isn't matched by the till. I don't count the pennies as such, just round each item up or down to the nearest pound and it's never far out.

Eileen101 · 08/12/2022 13:13

I do most of mine online which really helps me keep an eye on costs. I top up at Aldi or Tesco with fruit, salad, milk, bread usually two weekly after my monthly shop arrives, but definitely monitor this as I go round rather than be surprised at the till.

Aintnosupermum · 08/12/2022 13:14

Yup. It’s a game I play with the children to keep them occupied. My son is really good at it and gets within $5 including sales tax which isn’t on the price labeling. It’s 8.25% sales tax so not so straight forward.

Findyourneutralspace · 08/12/2022 13:15

Yes. I keep a running total, then do a quick tot up when it’s all on the conveyor belt. I’m generally within )3 either way, but less accurate recently.

Chikapu · 08/12/2022 13:16

No, I've usually got no clue how much the things I'm putting in the trolley cost.

Bikechic · 08/12/2022 13:16

I use scan as you shop in Tesco. Keeps track as I go.

StaceySolomonSwash · 08/12/2022 13:16

I do! It helps to have an idea of the ball park figure in case something gets scanned twice or an offer doesn't activate etc

IamSmarticus · 08/12/2022 13:22

Nope, I doubt I would be able to keep track. I'd forget where I was up to or add it up wrong or something. Plus it would take twice as long to do my shopping!

DragonWasp · 08/12/2022 13:24

No

savehannah · 08/12/2022 13:31

Nope, I just pick the cheaper things where I can and hope that a weekly shop for 5 adult sized people comes in at closer to £50 than £100.

AriettyHomily · 08/12/2022 13:32

Sort of, not to the penny though. Hangover from days when I was a kid and my mum would have to put stuff back at the till.

DipmeinChoc · 08/12/2022 13:34

No, it's a surprise at the till.

AWaferThinMint · 08/12/2022 13:35

I shop online so yes but not intentionally

browneyes35 · 08/12/2022 13:38

Yes. Lots of the females in our family do. I have no idea why the men don't.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 08/12/2022 13:38

I do a running total., not pennies but I’ll round up or down to nearest 10p it gives me a decent idea of what It’ll be.

frustratedashell · 08/12/2022 13:43

I use the scanner and also choose the cheapest options, works for me

123woop · 08/12/2022 14:06

No I tend to do a similar shop each week and it's always within £5 of our normal weekly/10 day spend (about £110)

Headabovetheparakeet · 08/12/2022 14:08

I pay attention to the cost of individual items and am quite price sensitive about some things but I don't add it all up.

I'm in the fortunate position of knowing I can afford what it will come to so I don't focus on the total.

usernotfound0000 · 08/12/2022 14:11

No, but I usually know if it's been a big shop (90-100) or a normal shop (60-70) depending on how much meat etc I've bought. I shop in Aldi so more often than not, I'm pleasantly surprised!

ChristmasTidyings · 08/12/2022 14:19

I use the scanner so I can see the running total. Absolutely useless at mental maths so otherwise I wouldn't have a clue. I generally get the same sorts of things in the same sort of volume so have an idea of what the total should roughly be.

ifonly4 · 08/12/2022 14:24

I shop to a weekly budget, so I add up roughly what's in my basket or trolley - if I'm near budget I make adjustments.

gogohmm · 08/12/2022 14:37

No but I'm not on a tight budget

Greatbiggoldfish · 08/12/2022 14:39

I scan as I go and keep an eye on the total ..

listsandbudgets · 08/12/2022 14:49

It depends.

Today I'm feeling very depressed so I thoughtlessly slung in nice stuff didn't give a sh*t until I got to the till - where I got a nasty shock so now I'm very very depressed but i have chocolate, crisps and ice cream!

Normally though I round up or down to nearest 50p/pound so I tend to have a rough idea. After this morning I reckon next shop will consist of bread, milk, lentils and some value and yellow label items.

Honestly, it's a priviledge to be able to do what I did this morning and I should count my blessings and cheer up.
