How much are you spending per day on gas?

Really not sure how to cut it down, especially now the temperature has dropped.

We spent £9 yesterday and the heating was off during the day. We have a 2 year old and baby due in 2 weeks so don't see how cold we can let the house get 🥶. Heating kicks in at 16 degrees overnight and it most certainly did.

I just paid £180 for gas in November, so about £6 per day including the standing charge. This is in a 1930's built 3 bed mid terrace. I don't think there's anyway to get it down.

This thread is making me feel better. We have no gas,but live in an all electric eco house. The heating is on very low all of the time, which keeps the house very warm and the heat recovery ventilation system is on all the while too. The house is 2000sq ft and it's costing us about £10 a day for electricity.
I was stressed out looking at the display saying what the cost was and how we are 'over budget' every day,but I can't do more than I've already done to lower our useage.

Darcy101 · 11/12/2022 09:28

This last week of low temps has been around £10/£13 a day with the heating on 7am to 10pm

Ours was £10 yesterday for gas and £6 for electric and that is also having an oil filled radiator on in the living room to top up the heat as it’s still cold in there.

LazingOnASundayAfternoon · 11/12/2022 09:39

About £10 a day, I have the heating on at 18 degrees all the time and we are still cold, we all wear dressing gowns or oodies and use hot water bottles, have high tog duvets, 4 of us have a shower each day (quick ones for me and my two younger kids but my teenager takes longer 😡), washing up to do as well each day. My gas costs have literally doubled since last winter and if it increases anymore it will be affordable for me. I am going to invest in some curtain poles and door curtains (from a charity shop hopefully) as an Xmas present to myself to see if this keeps us warmer.

MenopauseSucks · 11/12/2022 09:40

Averaging out at £10/day for gas & £2/day for electric.
I'd budgeted for £10/day for both & before the cold snap it was about £8/day.
This morning I put an extra hour on (3hrs/total) as it's only just reached 16.5c inside.
Then it'll come on again at 5.30pm until 8pm.
So today will be about £12/gas but still £2/electric.

What pisses me off is that until May 2022, I was on a 2 year fix rate that had been set up in May 2020.
I was paying 3p/KWH for gas & my cost per month for gas, electric & standing charges last winter was around £100.
And I was comfortable - thermostat at 20c!
Now the thermostat is 18.5c & it's rarely reaching that...

lobster12 · 11/12/2022 09:47

Last week we kept the heating on all day at 16c and it varied between £8-£14.
We can't afford for it to be over £10 everyday, so we are going to turn the heating on for a few hours twice a day at 16c and will see if that's cheaper. We have an electric heater which helps when we are all in one room.

IClaudine · 11/12/2022 09:50

The last couple of days I have had the heating on for 10 hours a days as so cold and DH is ill with covid. £10.80 not including the standing charge 😪

IClaudine · 11/12/2022 09:50

That is a day, btw.

cakeorwine · 11/12/2022 09:53

The sad reality is that gas was 4 p per kWh on the price cap this time last year and now it's 10p per kWh. 2.5 times more expensive.

There are going to be big daily bills this winter.

The gas usage very much depends on 'starting temperatures'. I think we are going to use less today than yesterday but we spent a lot yesterday getting it up to a decent temperature.

This sucks. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth living on an island in the middle of the Irish Sea?

Beautiful and safe it might be, but it ain’t cheap

Are you sure you have the correct KWH rate in your settings? How many hours a day is your heating on?
That's insane!

Bloody hell. I was having a sulk about how much my heating is costing, but that is horrendous.

GucciMama · 12/12/2022 14:31

I have my heating on 6-9 in the morning and 5-9 at night, and that is costing £10 a day. I dread to think what it would be if I had on all day Utilita pay as you go!

Pedallleur · 12/12/2022 14:37

just gas is approx £7 per day. thermostat set to a minimum of 15 degree at night so has been coming on in the early hours but then the house is slightly warm when the timer comes on at 6am Stays on until 7.45 then evening its 4.15pm until 8pm but set to 19 degrees

Pedallleur · 12/12/2022 14:40

we have to forget that it was £x last year and realise this is going to last as long as it lasts. How we'll feel when the energy companies report massive profits is another matter. They have no incentive to see it go back to what it was. If its gone up x 3 and they say its going back to x 2 they are still winning

MoggyMittens23 · 12/12/2022 15:00

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 08/12/2022 10:47

Well you don't need the heating on at night so that can be cut down. Heating during the day a couple of times, close doors and keep heat in rooms, lota of blankets and layers

Who says you don't need the heating on at night?! Maybe YOU don't

ifonly4 · 12/12/2022 15:10

Last month gas averaged £2.15 (including VAT, excluding standing charge). This month £5.41. Never have it on at night. It's was set at around 18.3c, but I've turned that down to about 17.9c this morning hoping to cut back a bit more.

Castle1970 · 20/01/2023 09:24

We had a smart meter fitted this week and were horrified to discover we are spending £16/day on gas and £6/day on electricity. I was already very aware prices have dramatically increased but it's shocking to see it so starkly presented to you on a daily basis.

Our gas was close to that in the cold snap before Christmas, but when that ended our daily use halved pretty much; yours will probably do the same. (Still terribly expensive compared to previous years but it won’t be the same all year)
I haven’t bothered looking this week but I imagine it’ll be the same again in this one.
Our electric usage doesn’t vary much - either side of £3 most days, occasionally over £4 if the oven’s on for a while.

daysleepers · 20/01/2023 20:04

We spend between £8 -11 a day but we have our heating set to 18 always and still boost it to 20 in the evenings. We have a baby and wouldn't sit in the cold even without the baby to be honest

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 20/01/2023 20:12

Not sure the daily cost as the bill is gas and electric but we're spending about £250-300 per month which is about what it was last year. The difference this time is that since last winter we've had our loft boarded and insulated and we've had a new boiler fitted. It made a massive difference and I dread to think how much the bills would be if we hadn't made those changes.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 20/01/2023 20:12

I would add we normally have the heating at 19 or 20 degrees during the day and most nights turn it off.
