How much are you spending per day on gas?

Really not sure how to cut it down, especially now the temperature has dropped.

We spent £9 yesterday and the heating was off during the day. We have a 2 year old and baby due in 2 weeks so don't see how cold we can let the house get 🥶. Heating kicks in at 16 degrees overnight and it most certainly did.

My house has high ceilings and single glazing so if the heatings not on it gets cold really quickly and takes ages to heat again. So I experimented and now I have it on 24/7.

I have it at 18 from around 8am-8pm, then 16 overnight. This is costing me around £6 per day. That being said, how much it will cost now it’s freezing outside, I don’t know. I’m keeping an eye on it!

I’m on payg meters so I have 3 months of vouchers to collect. I have to go to the post office to get them and it’s a faff, so haven’t cashed in any yet. Also I decided to use that money for a boost over Christmas when everyone’s home, so we can at least have a few properly warm days. Plus we’ll use a lot more electric then. So the extra £100 on each will be useful/needed.

I’m paying about £5 a day for both and I’m being very tight with it at the moment. Using the wood burner a lot and rarely having baths.

BayCityTrollers · 08/12/2022 09:48

We are heading towards £6 a day for gas and electricity. We are in the relatively mild south but it’s freezing right now, I hate it. I’m on annual leave and it’s okay in the morning but when the heating is off during the day, it’s freezing by 2pm. I have an oodie, thermal everything and blankets. Might be time for a heated throw.

Feel a bit bad for retired dh as I get to return to work and be warm all day next week, he’s stuck with the cold!

@Reluctantadult
If you're buying logs by the sackful (like the ones you get a petrol stations), then the log burner is probably going to work out more expensive than gas.

Search around for a local log supplier (local fb group will help), and you should be able to get a cubic metre bag of well-seasoned/kiln dried wood for ~£100. This is about 1/4 the price of buying small sacks, and then works out cheaper than the central heating.

Around £6 a day. We have the heating off overnight but it's on for around 3 hours in the morning and roughly the same in the evening.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 08/12/2022 10:47

Well you don't need the heating on at night so that can be cut down. Heating during the day a couple of times, close doors and keep heat in rooms, lota of blankets and layers

We have it set to 16 overnight and 19/20 during the day (as someone is almost always in.) So far our most expensive day has been £7.82

Ours is at 16 overnight and 18 from 7.30am. Gas cost yesterday was just under £12 so I’m envying your £7.82 for 19/20 degrees!
It’s been on for over 3 hours this morning and has only reached 16.6. Outside temp is still below 0…

Not necessarily true, it depends on your house.

I have experimented and if we don’t heat the house overnight and keep it at 16 (the stat just kicks the boiler in as needed) then it drops lower and when we turn it on next the boiler burns much longer to raise the temperature back up.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 11/12/2022 03:49

Interestingly, we normally just have our heating on for a couple of hours in the morning and a few more in the evening, set for about 17-18. During the day when we are out it has been getting down to 10 or 11 and I did wonder about this theory that keeping it on all day would be cheaper. We'll apparently not in my house - yesterday we kept it on all day (still set to the same temp) as we had guests round, and total cost for the day was £20, up from around £7-9 per day so far this month 😳

Be careful saving up your vouchers aa my supplier has stated they will expire after 3 months.

£0 as we now have a multi fuel stove to heat the house. The logs have gone up another £10 per load since September and the ovoids we used to get for December & January are ridiculous. House is around 18.5-19c but we don’t have the heating on after bedtime.

catsandkid · 11/12/2022 07:27

Trying to limit it to below £8/day but at weekends or on my day off with the kids we easily get to £9-10. And that's not us being frivolous... the house is so cold all the time and we're wearing billions of lawyers plus kids have their hats on. Hot water bottles available for each of us and we invested in cosy slippers earlier in the year. Trying to encourage relaxed cuddly under blanket type activities but the toddler isn't one to sit still long (though movement does help your body heat up I guess!). I'm finding it very tough tbh and feels rather insane that we're living like this.

Witsendwilly · 11/12/2022 08:14

This sucks. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth living on an island in the middle of the Irish Sea?

Beautiful and safe it might be, but it ain’t cheap

FTMFML · 11/12/2022 08:18

£15-18 .... its becoming quite unsustainable...

CrispsnDips · 11/12/2022 08:22

£15 per day on gas when we put the heating up to 19 in the day and 17 at night…but once these freezing weather temperatures change we’re turning it right down and surviving with coats, hot water bottles and going to bed under masses of throws/knitted blankets at 7pm 😆

blossomsinwinter · 11/12/2022 08:23

Don't know, but bills are very high!

I don't have the heating on a timer, but it's triggered to go off if drops below a certain temp. 13 overnight sometimes more during the day and if it's needed on. If it gets too cold (from having off completely for time period) then it takes hours to heat again.

Long explanation

Bikechic · 11/12/2022 08:27

£8 for both gas and electric. It's set to 10 degrees over night so basically doesn't come on as no need for it when we're in bed.

orangegato · 11/12/2022 08:28

How is everyone’s so cheap? Heating on for two hours and it’s about £12 a day.

JorisBonson · 11/12/2022 08:28

£3-£4 a day. I've got covid and giving up on budgeting today so will be on all day, guessing at least a tenner.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/12/2022 08:31

Average of £7/day on gas heating this week but hit £9 yesterday.

blossomsinwinter · 11/12/2022 08:32

My gas also covers the cooker I would add. Though gas has always been the low bill compared to the electricity 😱. We're also running heated electric throws which one of the DC has on a lot I think.

Unforgettablefire · 11/12/2022 08:39

Just under £12 for me yesterday and only two rooms in the house were warm , probably because it's not been on for a while.

crimsonlake · 11/12/2022 08:50

I am only heating the room I spend time in since I am usually on my own, are people heating the whole house?

FourTeaFallOut · 11/12/2022 09:00

Yes. I heat my whole home.

Verona82 · 11/12/2022 09:04

10-15 pounds a day and thermostat only set to 16, was 18 but have had to turn it down.
