what do your school aged kids do after school?

My oldest is now at school and goes to after school club. Not sure what I pictured but it just feels like such a repetitive juggle during the week. One of us picks up DC from the after school club at 5pm, quick homework, a bit of play, bath, 15mins cartoons, dinner and bedtime routine, lights out at 7.30. Ok thats only four days a week but just seems really humdrum and a bit dull. Is everyone else's the same?

Bed at 7:30? How old is your child? No wonder you are rushed.

jhkwqh83u · 06/12/2022 19:14

Reception so four years old. I didnt think it was all that early. To be fair, they're usually not fully asleep till 8

Home, TV, tea/dinner, play, read, bed time. Age 6.

I suppose that sounds about right then. 4 is so very little. I think I'd cut out the play as he'll have done that all afternoon in childcare. Not sure what you're question is but yes, if you use wrap around childcare weekdays are a relentless cycle. I'd simplify as much as possible. No homework during the week for a child at that age who is out all day. It's too much.

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 06/12/2022 19:20

No after school club.
But pick one up 2.50 from pre school 3.5 miles away so shoot home drop car and run to school which is 5.min down rd for 3.10 pick up. Home 3.20
2 days is home, Change, snack, drink out 3.50 for a 4. 15 m club till 5.15 Home dinner. Bath book bed pretty much with a little play in between.
One cant stay up past 7 and the reception age goes at 7.30/8

Two other days its home. Play, dinner, bath or wash. Book bed

Friday its home play dsc comes.. Dinner. Baths bed.

If they go to bed much later they are very grumpy the next day

Its boring.

This week our 2 days home

This. Your 4 year old is at school til 5 every day??

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 06/12/2022 19:23

Id love no homework each day.
Our reception age gets key words to write each day 5x each of 3 words (same 3 words for 1 week)
And book each day.
Each day its done they get a sticker. Sticker chart full (takes a week of homework) a Friday afternoon they get golden time and a gift to choose, bangle, pen, pencil.

So of course if i say to dc lets not do. It tonight you're tired. I get tantrum as won't get a sticker!

fjordsfocus · 06/12/2022 19:24

Afterschool club is such a crap necessity. Home, dinner waiting, bath, bedtime routine.

It gets better as they get older and able to stay up a little later.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/12/2022 19:27

Home at 3.10- snack, some maths or writing, tv, dinner, shower, reading - bed at 7/7.30
Mondays does dance at 4.45pm

Numbat2022 · 06/12/2022 19:28

That seems fairly normal to me? My son's in pre-school but that's been our routine since he was 1 and started nursery. One of us picks up around 5.30, something quick to eat, in the bath at 7ish, bed at 8 (he's a bit of a night owl, rarely wakes earlier than 7am). He's there four days a week.

When he goes to school he'll obviously he doing different activities and will be in another day, but generally the timings will be the same.

1 day a week after school club until 5, home for dinner, bath, tv/Xbox for an hour then bed.
2 days a week we go external clubs from 4-5, home afterwards for a quick dinner as they eat sandwiches provided there to tide them over, then bath and play/tv before bed at 7.30/8.
2 days we 'relax' home from school by 3.30, I clean they do whatever they want until dinners ready.
I only work until 2.30 4 days a week but single parent so still quite manic.

jhkwqh83u · 06/12/2022 19:34

Not sure what am asking. I guess it feels quite repetitive. On Friday, he's got swimming and I do pick him up at 3.15. In fact, even his after school club is only till 4.30 but it takes a little while to get home so we're home at 5. Have to do the homework, he gets a new book every other day and at the moment I also try to get in some practice for his xmas show.

Irritate me mainly.

Usually he plays when he gets home (7), or we walk to the park after school, after 30 minutes of play or park we do a bit of ready etc together. Then I start tea so he plays again or does homework he can do on his own, after tea he has a bit of telly time, then bath or shower and bed at 7:15ish.

babyyodaxmas · 06/12/2022 19:34

Mine are older now but in a week we had:
Football
Drama
Ballet
Judo
Riding
Swimming

Also toyed with gymnastics, art club and chess

1.5 hrs tutoring and an hours hw in yr 5 for the 11+

If nothing else on then go to the park for a bit or in the winter the library. Can't stand coming straight home- hoooours to fill.

That schedule would do me in never mind an 7 year old. When do they do homework and relax?

berksandbeyond · 06/12/2022 19:36

Pick up 3.15.
Extra curricular classes 2 evenings a week.
The other 3 days we do her reading, play, go for a walk / cycle / scoot, to the park, in the garden etc. then we have dinner as a family, sometimes has a bath, she has a book read to her every night before bed. Bed usually 7.30-8.
She's 4.
I think that's probably pretty normal.
Will be nice to have the lighter nights again and be able to do more.

This. Your 4 year old is at school til 5 every day??

Mine has been in childcare until 5:30 every day since he was 9 months old, he’s now 7.5 - please if you have any other suggestions then that would be wonderful Hmm

BonjourPetitPois · 06/12/2022 19:41

Feel the same as you. 2 DC aged 5 and 8. At after school club 3 or 4 nights a week till between 5 and 5.30. Wednesday nights are a rush home to eat and get back out to Rainbows/Beavers at 6. The other evenings tend to be a bit of a play at home, tea, tablet/TV time then bath and bed by about 7.30. Very samey but can't really change much when DH and I both work.

But when do you fit in lacross and polo????

jhkwqh83u · 06/12/2022 19:41

Ds is only at ASC four days per week - and it's only till 4.30 but even so. Maybe it's because it gets dark so early at the moment that am feeling like there's literally nothing but quite a rushed routine day in, day out

8yr old gets picked up by childminder after school every day. Then has some clubs too. Monday swimming 5.15-5.45, Tuesday dancing 4-6, Thurs athletics 6-7 and Friday more dancing 4.30-6.

4yr old still at nursery spends every afternoon with childminder and does afternoon school run.

Either DH or I fetch them at 6pm from the childminder or one of the clubs. Its a treadmill every week and logistics get complicated if one of us has to work late.

He'll be 9 in 3 weeks. They're never set homework. He's the top of his class and pretty much at the highest level he can be compared to the country. He has a reading a comprehension age of a 14 year old. Maths is even higher.

The hobbies are his downtime. He's suspected ASD and likes being busy. It costs me a fortune and I'm permanently exhausted, but he thrives on it.

jelly79 · 06/12/2022 19:43

Aged 5. No after school club
But different activities, PE club, tennis club, football or swimming

Chill out, tea, bath, reading
