Second hand not always worth it

Does anyone else find that second hand is not that much cheaper? Looking for an Xmas jumper for my boys for Xmas jumper day at school rather than being wasteful and buying a new one decided to look on vinted a lot of the jumpers I’ve come across aren’t much more to buy it new (in fact some are more expensive) and by the time I’ve factored it postage cost it’s the same price as a new one!

I got Xmas jumpers for my kiddos from a charity shop, each was about £2.
This year there was plenty, but last year almost nothing, or very quickly gone.

NotMeNoNo · 06/12/2022 12:09

It's peak demand for Christmas jumpers this week! Also, not all jumpers are the same quality but perhaps that doesn't matter for a throwaway novelty item.

LadyDanburysHat · 06/12/2022 12:13

Our primary school did a wonderful Christmas jumper swap at the school fair this year. They had a statistic that more than 90% of Christmas jumpers are worn only once. I thought it was a great idea to swap your old small one for a bigger one.

Ravageur · 06/12/2022 12:13

You won't receive it in time anyway what with the postal strikes 😂

That's really great idea.

Looks like I will be heading to the shops to buy new by the looks of it!

Sew some tinsel or baubles or a santa hat onto a jumper you already have and away you go.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 06/12/2022 12:18

You are looing at Vinted and expecting charity shop prices? Not all second hand stuff is cheap, some is far more expensive than new.

Locally our charity shops do Christmas jumper swaps. Take one in in clean and good condition and swap it for another. They send some to us too, we give them out to our clients. Nobody gets left behind in the Christmas jumper stakes!

plinkypots · 06/12/2022 12:19

You've left it too late. If you plan ahead a bit you can get them for next to nothing

No I’m expecting second hand stuff to be cheaper than new, these are primark jumpers/ George Asda not designer! And they are worn not new I don’t think it’s weird to expect them to be cheaper than they cost new? When they’ve been worn?

That's because new items are too cheap (because of low labour prices etc). I'd ask on local Facebook group to borrow one.

No I haven’t they are still in stores just thought I would buy second hand to save wasting money.

I don’t need to borrow any I can afford to buy them was just trying to save a bit of money and expected second hand to be cheaper than £10-£15 for a primark jumper

Such cheap schmutter is being sold on Vinted?

Unbelievable.

The poster was clearly saying you’ve left it too late to get them cheap not you’ve left it too late to get them at all

PP means you've left it too late to pick up the cheap second hand ones, the only ones left now are brand new in shops or only-slightly-cheaper-than-new second hand. The Ebay/Facebook sellers can smell desperation this close to Xmas so will charge as much as they think they can get away with.

AnyRandomName · 06/12/2022 12:27

Why don't you just decorate an existing jumper? We do this every year: a bit of tinsel, a bauble, a few felt stars. Job done and then it can go back to being a normal jumper.

Much less wasteful and probably quicker than going to the shops to buy a new one

Snoopsnoggysnog · 06/12/2022 12:27

I sold two Xmas jumpers on Vinted for £3 each and I bought my DS one for £4 which was practically new - £6.50 including postage. It was George at Asda, there’s nothing on their site for less than £15 for age 12+
so I’m happy, this one will last him a couple of years.
I also gave away two others to relatives. Madness to buy these new , although I clearly have done in the past!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/12/2022 12:32

When second hand stuff has to be posted, and the item is mass produced to be sold relatively cheaply, then the cost benefits are going to be pretty low, if there are any at all. Especially when it's something really seasonal!

Buuuuuuttty - without wanting to sounds to ecowarrior about this - reusing a second hand jumper, and reducing the market for new ones, will reduce waste. One jumper at a time!!

Oblomov22 · 06/12/2022 12:34

I got one on eBay for £2.50. I ordered it early last month particularly to get a cheaper / earlier one. Well pleased.

Colourinsidethelines · 06/12/2022 12:41

I ordered one on vinted a while ago planning ahead and whilst it was cheap when it arrived it was completely not what they had sold it as. It was advertised as a next age 7 but it was really cheap material and not from next and age 9-10 so unusable. So I bought a new one in the end, was a waste buying it on vinted!

Sartre · 06/12/2022 12:46

Always best to plan ahead of time with Christmas jumpers. I get my DC’s theirs on Vinted in October so it isn’t peak time and I managed to sort all of them this year for £20 including postage (5 DC).

StressedToTheMaxxx · 06/12/2022 12:49

OP honestly, pop into a couple of second hand shops for a browse. They often have lots of seasonal things ie Christmas outfits, Halloween costumes etc and they're cheap as chips.

Hopelessacademic · 06/12/2022 12:56

I find the postage often makes second hand stuff not worth it.
One solution I have on ebay is to only buy something from a seller if they also have other things I want (click "see other items").
So for example DD needed more leggings for nursery. I don't really care what they're like as they'll get ruined anyway, so found a seller where I wanted 3 of their lots - one set of 2 leggings, one set of 3, and a couple of new tops for the new baby. Then with combined postage it's fine.
Similarly bought her a nice pair of wellies, but the seller also had some mankier ones in the same size, so bought them too for nursery (they need a pair to live there). £8 for 2 pairs of wellies inc postage isn't bad.
