Second hand not always worth it

Does anyone else find that second hand is not that much cheaper? Looking for an Xmas jumper for my boys for Xmas jumper day at school rather than being wasteful and buying a new one decided to look on vinted a lot of the jumpers I’ve come across aren’t much more to buy it new (in fact some are more expensive) and by the time I’ve factored it postage cost it’s the same price as a new one!

Buying second hand is not about getting the cheapest though. It's about reducing your carbon impact.

I don’t need to borrow any I can afford to buy them was just trying to save a bit of money and expected second hand to be cheaper than £10-£15 for a primark jumper

They can't possibly be selling Primark Xmas jumpers for £10-£15, are you looking at the brand new with tags on Vinted?

I've sold three in the last week. £2-£2.50 each (plus postage)

Luckily Xmas jumpers are fairly unisex so youngest DC is rewearing oldest DC old ones, oldest DC is now too cool for a Xmas jumper 😎

It's a good idea in principle to buy second hand, just maybe get in earlier next year

my son needs teen sizes so maybe that’s why? He wouldn’t wear anything like tinsel etc on a jumper

The charity shops around here tend to have Xmas jumpers our from early November.

OP honestly, pop into a couple of second hand shops for a browse. They often have lots of seasonal things ie Christmas outfits, Halloween costumes etc and they're cheap as chips.

This. No need for all the drama, and trekking off to buy brand new.

Why don't you send a lower offer on Vinted? When I joined, all the advice said to price things slightly higher than you want, because people will send you offers, and yet hardly anyone has actually sent me any offers. Instead of sitting there saying it's too expensive, why not just send an offer as apparently lots of people do?

tectonicplates · 06/12/2022 13:23

I keep being told about all this haggling that apparently happens on Vinted, yet I've seen very little evidence of it.

Have you tried FB marketplace or your local free / free cycle group?

I think second hand isn’t necessarily cheaper.

I mainly buy second hand because you can (sometimes) find better quality.

The quality of clothes has gone downhill so much in the last 15 years. A brand new thing might look new for one day, then start to look well used. Stuff in charity shops has already been washed, so you can tell it will stand up to washing again.

So I don’t mind paying more for second hand, I spent £15 on some trousers for dc in the charity shop last week. I could definitely find new trousers for less, but these were nice.

You've left it too late. If you plan ahead a bit you can get them for next to nothing

Yes this, if you wanna second hand you need to get them during November.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 06/12/2022 16:33

When mine were in yr1 I bought new and a good quality couple of sizes too big and they lasted all through to year 7
Even if a bit tight by then. I also avoided the time / cost and hassle every year of either looking for or buying a new one, They just new that was their Christmas jumper. Something Christmasy but not too fussy and glitzy doesn't date.

There are a lot of “everything’s £5” shops. If it’s just for one day, you could do worse
