I can't stand when people say they have 'plans'. As in, 'I can't make that day because I already have plans'. I don't know why it irritates me in that context but it does.

Oh you would hate me!

Plans is my most used word

People from the South East using the word "nowt" in their southern accents. Or worse, putting on an atrocious northern "accent" specifically to say a phrase with "nowt" in it.

Early doors, which I’ve just seen on another thread.
Where the fuck did that come from? It doesn’t make any sense.,

SinnerBoy · 10/12/2022 12:02

I've been hearing that for as long as I can remember. Perhaps it's a Northern thing?

WandaWonder · 10/12/2022 12:02

Babe/babes

I also hate ‘passed. As someone who lost someone close to me I really really hate it. It’s like you’re too lazy to say passed away. Which in turn is like you’re too scared to talk about the fact that no, they actually died. Don’t try to make it sound softer than it is please.

Me too. As a nation we seem to be reluctant to say "dead" or "died" , even in healthcare settings, and I hear people say "X sadly passed away". What is the issue with saying "X died" I wonder? I've been bereaved and I can say my parents died, that they're dead. Same when my much loved dog died. Someone made reference to him having "passed over rainbow bridge" and although they meant well I did do a silent eye roll and gag.

Yes! Even the bloody registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages did it to us when we registered a death: “And when did they pass?” I felt like pointing him to the sign on his door: you’re not a registrar of passings. Plus we’d gone in and said “We’re here to register a death” – the polite thing to do is mimic the bereaved’s language, surely? If I’d wanted him to use passed I’d have said it!

I irrationally hate the term "help yourself" or "a helping" when used to describe getting food, i.e. "they helped themselves to some pudding". So needlessly euphemistic that it makes me feel really uncomfortable. Also the words themselves sound a bit gross to me, makes me think of bland, room temperature custard.

Also, when people describe really dull, ordinary things as "...BLISS!!!". Like a lie-in or eating chocolate alone or a slightly longer than normal bath. It just makes me feel sad.

TheChosenTwo · 12/01/2023 17:03

As mentioned on a thread I was on a few days ago and it pissed me off so much…
nibble
No one nibbles unless they’re a mouse!
People just eat. You can eat a small amount, but you’re still just fucking eating!!!

What’s wrong with meal?
Or micturition?
What about expectoration?

Suture
Pantyhose
Couch

"meal" makes me think of a bowl of uncooked, wet grains. Difficult to explain, but it sounds a bit too "folksy" and "mouthy" for a word that's supposed to be describing food. Puts me off eating!

MonsoonMadness · 14/01/2023 18:35

I agree about meal. My mother calls everything a ‘meal’. She can’t cook and it’s as though dinner lunch and breakfast are all slop from a bucket. Which is what it tastes like.
