What do you eat when kids are away?

Dc off to Exdh tonight I’ve had an early dinner of a bowl of muesli, 2 carrots, some cheddar and a couple of crackers. I just can not be bothered cooking for myself. At the weekend I had avocado on toast, blt made with precooked bacon and a bit of wine, cheese and grapes for tea.

I don’t think it’s terribly healthy, what are nice, healthy meals for one. I do have things like chilli/ bolognaise in the freezer but can’t be bothered doing rice/ pasta for one as I seem incapable of not cooking vast amounts.

LeeHarper5 · 05/12/2022 17:26

Tin of soup… but 9 times out of 10 I’d get a take away. Hate cooking for one.

popandchoc · 05/12/2022 17:27

Usually some kind of ready meal or a takeaway when my kids go to their dad.

Egg on toast is my fave

4yearsandwaiting · 05/12/2022 17:29

Porridge, scrambled egg on toast, fruit, salad or I cook extra the day before when kids ate here and warm it up.

Shmithecat2 · 05/12/2022 17:30

Cheese and Broccoli Pasta N Sauce mainly. I love it when there's no one else to cook for.

glamourousindierockandroll · 05/12/2022 17:49

Honestly, cereal and other assorted crap. Might treat myself to fish and chips if I can be bothered waiting.

Jellycatspyjamas · 05/12/2022 17:54

Mine go two nights mid-week, the first night I work late so usually have a takeaway (no fighting over prawn crackers), the second night I have more time but it’s usually something reheated or cheese, crackers, wine.

NoelNoNoel · 05/12/2022 18:12

Cheese, pickles, crackers, a few Pringles on the side, olives.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 05/12/2022 18:14

Fish and chips sounds lush. I feel like takeaway is such an expensive treat nowadays but much cheaper if shopping for one. I think I'm going to have some at the weekend.

Cheese on toast
Eggs on toast
Tuna on toast
So no effort. Its a great opportunity to get a break from cooking.

HandsomeDaughter · 05/12/2022 18:40

I probably would make myself some eggs but when I wasn't on Keto I would eat a ready meal of fish pie or macaroni cheese because my family aren't fan of either.

SpinningFloppa · 05/12/2022 18:42

My kids don’t go anywhere but if they did I would get a takeaway!! I love the thought of being able to order one just for me and how much cheaper it would be!

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 05/12/2022 19:03

Egg and cheese on toast! My kid is allergic to all of it so feel bad eating something that look delicious in front of him. So, when I'm only making something quick for myself, I'll indulge myself with something like that.

MintJulia · 05/12/2022 19:11

My ds doesn't like spicy stuff or sea food so that, or I experiment with new recipes.

TheChosenTwo · 05/12/2022 19:13

I hate cooking with a passion, I usually don’t bother and have an early night or just earn something straight from the fridge - sliced meats and olives or something.
if I was really hungry I’d get a takeaway but honeslty on the odd occasion it’s just me to feed I don’t bother.
however I’d it was going to be on a regular basis I’d go to the lengths of having boiled eggs and soldiers!

PurpleMoonbows · 05/12/2022 19:25

My daughter is vegetarian and so we eat meat-free meals most of the time at home. If she's away, I often enjoy a beef casserole with suet dumplings. Yum!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/12/2022 19:29

I usually have either a massive mixed salad with blue cheese (because I'm the only one that likes it) or pizza with anchovies because (a) see above and (b) I'm feeling lazy.

Sometime it's just cheese, crackers and an apple though...

AriettyHomily · 05/12/2022 19:37

Fresh pasta if I can be arsed, or peanut butter on toast or cream cheese bagels. Cooking for everyone is bad enough, cooking for one is boring.

Ringmaster27 · 05/12/2022 19:41

Honestly? Crap.
Yesterday, kids were with ExH, I had no work and no plans. I had McDonald’s breakfast around 10:30am, some crisps a bit later and cheese on toast for dinner that night. 😬😬

jjeoreo · 05/12/2022 20:00

I always seem to go for something quite healthy like vegetable slops, eggs and green veg, or fish baked with vegetables.

Or I just do what I did tonight and eat a bagel with peanut butter.

Sometimes I invite people for dinner in which case I spend the afternoon cooking something faffy and adult which isn't compatible with kids.

Sometimes I batch cook things I like for the freezer for nights when I eat seperately to them.

If I'm not doing either of that I usually do nice picky bits - olives, posh cheese, snacks etc - or frozen pizza or takeaway.

Miajk · 05/12/2022 20:47

Can you batch cook some nice soup?

Tomato, basil & roasted pepper soup with some ciabatta with goats cheese spread in top.

Moroccan chicken soup with some fresh crusty bread, etc.

Alternatively I'd be tempted to make something like a nice quick pasta. Or batch cook shepherds pie and freeze it up.

Chicken curry is a good one too - sauce from a jar, buy diced chicken, don't even bother with rice just have some naan.

FinallyHere · 05/12/2022 20:57

Eggs Benedict made with grilled back bacon, poached eggs on a muffin with a sachet M&S hollandaise warmed and poured over.

Lamb chops and Greek salad

Salmon Sashimi, loads of it. Glass of champagne

Cheese board. Grapes. Crackers.

Caesar salad adding fresh garlic and anchovy paste to Mayo, prawns or chicken and bacon, lettuce, spring onions.

Oh, and for days only this will do, litre Hagen Dazz ice creme, squirts creme and a shot of something g like Baileys. Hell, add charities marinaded in brandy.
