How cold is your house without the heating on?

I am in a small Victorian terrace. Had new windows, new boiler and some insulation put in recently ( limited by nature of property). I am a bit disappointed by results. Downstairs area has an extension and is better insulated (some new walls) so if I heat that area it seems to retain heat for longer. Upstairs is pretty chilly. I put heating on at bedtime yesterday for a couple of hours and it was about 16.5. No heating on since then and it’s 14 degrees upstairs. I am in London by the way and outside it’s 5 degrees.

is that to be expected in an older house?

Dh turned ours off. Got in earlier 12.5

Draughty and single glazed front and back door. Windows aren't brilliant.

Lostatseawithnolighthouse · 05/12/2022 17:44

About 9.5 degrees without heating at the moment.

JackTorrance · 05/12/2022 20:50

@BorgQueen that is really kind of you and your DH.

Speakeasy22 · 05/12/2022 23:03

Scotland, 1960 build. 9-11 degrees overnight, rising to a balmy 12 - 13 during the day. Grim.

MidnightMeltdown · 06/12/2022 11:54

I had no heating on overnight and my house was 15.2 this morning

50s semi in the north

irene90 · 08/12/2022 12:59

Oh tell me about it !
I’m in a 1930 semi , north west and it’s absolutely freeezing . Minus 3 outside .
Do you know, I think with the fact the the U.K. had the gas pretty cheap they didn’t really put much effort in insulate/ build the houses properly. They were cheap to heat anyway. That’s my theory. So now we are cold .

When we bought it the boiler had been off for a few days and it was around 12. And I remember keeping the thermostat at 21 all day long and it would be on for 10-12 hours a day 🤣🤣🤣🤣
ridiculous!
Now I keep it at 17/17.5 mostly . Still goes 4-5 hours .

saying that though , I have a friend in a new built that has basically the heating off as it doesn’t really drop under 18. But I also know another couple in a house which is few years old and it’s cold too, so for an 100 years old house I think it’s ok.

we have a new boiler , new roof, put loft insulation , changed all the windows hinges as there were massive gaps , new carpet and underlay upstairs .
next I want floor insulation and some inside insulation in the two bay windows . Possible some triple glaze in the bay windows .
And I will never buy a detached. 4 external walls ? No thanks .

irene90 · 08/12/2022 16:23

You could get an oil filled radiator for your room. They aren’t that expensive too run. That’s too cold .

silverback · 10/12/2022 21:56

This was at 9am this morning 😲

We have been away for 24 hours with the heating off, but knowing the frost would kick in. Came home to 10 degrees in the hall and 9 in my bedroom.

It's never been that cold in the house, even a few years ago when we had snow and the stat was set to 12 degrees overnight, it only kicked in once

I can only assume it got that low as the heating has hardly been on the last week or so

No heating as out and it got down to 7! Proving very hard to get warm again. I think it's now the point of having it on timer. I can still see my breath now. Baltic! Not very good at all. £13 and 7 hours with the heating on its 14 downstairs and 10.6 upstairs 🥶🥶🥶

Hereweare12111 · 11/12/2022 00:17

Does anyone have an air source heat pump ? I’m in a new build had heating running at 15 all day and overnight and only have to turn it up to 16 in the day during these - temps. There absolutely brilliant my house feels so warm doesn’t get too cold overnight either.

Gasmyarse · 11/12/2022 13:29

My house is 14 at moment. No heating on

WhaleInAManger · 12/12/2022 10:22

Our heating goes off at 8pm. From then until 6.30am the house has been dropping from 17/18c to about 12/13c.

zighead · 12/12/2022 11:01

Mine is 11.5 degrees this morning. Brrrrrrr. Heating was set to 16 and went off at 9pm last night.

NellyBarney · 12/12/2022 13:17

It's now 5 degrees in 2/3 of the house, i.e. everywhere we turned the heating off. In bedrooms/kitchen/family bathroom, heating is set to 16 degrees and goes down to 12 degrees overnight. 16 degrees feels comfortably warm, but when walking through the unheated rooms, I need to put on a coat and hat.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 12/12/2022 16:41

Oil filled radiator has been on in lounge all day, temperature outside has not got above 0c; room has just reached 16c. Our energy provider is doing one of their ‘use less, earn more’ sessions from 5-7pm - it’s going to be brutal!!

This is mine now…

oh my username seems apt.
Stupid Edwardian semi with 10ft ceilings and HUGE single glazed windows. 13c at my desk right now. 20 yr od but fully maintained and regularly serviced combi boiler that just has markings for min-max and nowt 'thermostatic' to kick on if temp gets low. Heating on 6-8am and 7-10pm but trying to use it less in the evenings, LOTS of layers and heated throw for WFH.

Check your humidity levels, if too high… that is what is making your house cold.

Unfortunately, a lot of insulation in a Victorian house may result in condensation and high humidity levels.

you may want to consider a PIV pump to reduce the humidity. I am certainly considering one after the 30cm loft insulation has resulted in a lot of condensation both above and below it.

We're in a Victorian terrace, with (cracked) single glazing to the front of the house. We've got an engineer coming to install a PIV early Jan, and joiner booked for double glazing in Feb. So fingers crossed this will be the coldest winter we'll feel in this house!

We're living in one room with a stove, it's 16 deg currently but drops to under 10 overnight.

I see your 10 foot @coldlocation and raise you our 12 foot ceilings. Buy a period property they said, full of character they said. Just didn't mention the cold and damp. At least it's cool in the summer hey 🤣

Findyourneutralspace · 12/12/2022 20:06

Victorian terrace here. Tenperatures outside hovering around zero. In the morning before the heating comes on it’s 12.5°, then I leave it on all day and it can get to 16 or 17. It’s ridiculous.

AnyFucker · 12/12/2022 20:09

The thermostat didn’t kick in this morning so no heating on when I got up. The house was 12 degrees.

silverback · 12/12/2022 21:22

I think my house needs a good continuous blast of central heating for a few days to warm up everything in it, rather than just the air. No matter how warm it gets in here everything still feels cold to the touch.... the walls, tables, desk, door handles, even the carpet. By the evening they feel slightly less cold, but by the morning (with no central heating on).... everything is freezing again.

May I ask you how much you have quoted for the PIV installation and if it is a heated pump? I have been getting quotes but one was into the thousands and the other one for far far less so I’m not sure if I have managed to find the dodgy traders… again 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm in East Yorkshire and we'll be paying £900, we had one installed in our last house 2 or 3 years ago and it cost us £850 then (same guy). Yes it's heated, I think it's a Nuair system ?? It worked really well in our old house, hence we're getting one here too!
