How cold is your house without the heating on?

I am in a small Victorian terrace. Had new windows, new boiler and some insulation put in recently ( limited by nature of property). I am a bit disappointed by results. Downstairs area has an extension and is better insulated (some new walls) so if I heat that area it seems to retain heat for longer. Upstairs is pretty chilly. I put heating on at bedtime yesterday for a couple of hours and it was about 16.5. No heating on since then and it’s 14 degrees upstairs. I am in London by the way and outside it’s 5 degrees.

is that to be expected in an older house?

Those of you with boiler problems - if you can describe the fault, better still if you have the fault code, just put the make and model on here and I can get DH to advise.
Anyone who needs boiler help in the Staffordshire / South Cheshire area, you can pm me. DH never books himself up fully as he’s semi retired so he’s almost always available within a day or two and if he can fix parts rather than just replacing them, he will, as it’s usually cheaper e.g. a couple of seals for £10 on a pump + £50 to fit it rather than a whole new pump at £70-£150 + £100 labour.
A lot of heating engineers put a hefty mark up on parts so if one tells you that a certain part is needed, get them to show it to you on a trade website 😉 10-15% is reasonable for going to fetch it, anything more is taking the p.

1600s cottage - 8 degrees now - central heating will come on if it drops below 5.5 inside to stop pipes freezing. Woodburner keeps it warm and dry usually

Small, well insulated semi detached new build - 14 degrees upstairs and down. Don't use central heating, but multi fuel stove raises overall temperature and keeps lounge warm.

15 year old very cosy and insulated house....or so I thought. Had the heating off for 2 days last week (just fan heater in the room I was in for short periods) and it got down to 13.5°C

Numbat2022 · 05/12/2022 10:31

1980s house, was 13.8 when I woke up this morning. It was really chilly, I did put the heating on and have now set it to come on at 6am every day as we're in for a cold snap. I find in winter if I warm the house in the morning it's usually ok until the sun sets, unless it's snowy/freezing cold outside when we do need a blast at lunchtime.

We have some big south-facing windows so it gets boiling hot in summer and retains heat for ages. I really must get some decent blinds on them.

19/20 in all rooms with no heating.
I like it around 22 but can wfh quite happily without the heating on - I just have a blanket over my legs at my desk. Sometimes though I do just put it on, we can afford the heating and also have individual heating/thermostats in each room and underfloor heating so no radiators. This means the heat seems to be equally distributed in the rooms as it’s coming from the floor of the whole space.
it’s not ‘cold’ and I don’t have heating on in my bedroom and sleep with the window open.

Where are you living? The Mediterranean?!

Spliffle · 05/12/2022 10:36

1920s house here and it's 8C in the bedroom which is also my work room. I feel fine though with a coffee in my hand. When it gets windy, that's when it's really chilly.

mamabear715 · 05/12/2022 10:45

2006 mid town house. Usually around 18C but the last day or two dipping to 17.6 & the heating kicks in around then. Am in the north of England.
#Blessed! I would have frozen to death by now in our previous old cottage..

squashyhat · 05/12/2022 10:51

Turn of last century semi in SE England. New windows this year. Heating is currently on 1.5 hours morning amd evening with the thermostat set at 19. So far it's not dropped below 14 which I find quite comfortable with a jumper on. We do have 2 woodburners for when it gets really cold.

Whendovescry03 · 05/12/2022 11:02

Our old listed house dropped to 11 degrees yesterday. We have no central heating but we do have a few plug in oil heaters and a wood burner in one room. In Jan/Feb our electricals often won't turn on without encouragement as it's too cold (laptop, hair straighteners, etc) and I once recorded 5 degrees in the bedroom.

We are on our 4th winter without central heating. I said last year that I wasn't doing another winter w/o central heating but despite trying we still don't have it. We have had all new pipes and radiators since May but the new pellet stove is on a pallet in the garage and a new log boiler is on a pallet in the dining room. Installers came eventually the week before last. I am hoping they might come today and if not at least this week. We have a log burner in the sitting room which we are using late afternoon and evening and we keep the door shut. It is 9 in my bedroom at the moment, 11.5 in the kitchen and 14 in the sitting room which has kept the heat from last night quite well considering the outside temperature. It's a detached stone cottage which we are renovating with a flat roofed seventies extension for the kitchen. We are improving insulation and it has now got a "warm roof" on the kitchen. We are home all day. We are hoping we can afford the central heating once we do get it done. We have oversized radiators with the plan to run it at a low temperature. We have got used to lower temperatures and I have an electric blanket on the bed which is great/essential. Also sheepskin rugs on the sofa which I also rate very highly.

SallyWD · 05/12/2022 11:09

When we had a boiler problem the other day the heating went off for hours. It got down to 12.5 degrees at 5pm. We're in Yorkshire in a large 1930s semi.

FelizNavicrab · 05/12/2022 11:11

At the moment it's getting down to about 15c overnight when the heating is off.

During the day it's set to hold temps at around 17.5c.

Soddingchristmas · 05/12/2022 11:15

Bloody freezing! Our heating pops on when the internal temperature dips below 14.5 and it was regularly popping itself on. Because of the worry about heating bills, DP has now dropped it to 13 degrees so it won’t come on as often.

We live in a newish build house, 10 years old? 3 storey. Costs a fortune to heat.

I WFH permanently (national company with the nearest branch around 100 miles away from me) so I can’t even spend a day in an office warm. I literally shiver all day even with extra layers and blankets. I usually wear my dressing gown over my clothes but wore my coat indoors working last week.

StaceySolomonSwash · 05/12/2022 11:16

10.5° in the bedrooms and hall, dining room gets to 11.5° with no heating on. My art studio is currently 8° so when I go out there later I'll be ramping up the heat in there!

Cherrysoup · 05/12/2022 12:26

3 bed semi, 20 x 10ft rooms, bloody freezing, heating has failed!

zighead · 05/12/2022 12:32

I live in a 1960's semi detached and it's currently 12 degrees. Will put the heating on to 17 degrees late afternoon before kids get home from school and turn it off at 9pm.

toycat · 05/12/2022 12:35

11.8 C in the living room - heating last on last night 5-7pm. 1930s house in Manchester

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 05/12/2022 12:40

1980s detached build with dreadful double glazing. DP spent all weekend going round the windows with filler and then using plastic shrink wrap. It's helped a lot, but haven't had heating on today and it's 13 degrees. Am wearing 2 tshirts and 4 woollen jumpers. Am drinking lots of tea and planning a brisk walk, then heating on when the kids come back.

Next summer we're replacing all the windows and checking the insulation but we only just moved in so haven't had a chance yet

PoquitaAmiga · 05/12/2022 12:44

18th century detached w/double glazing about 10/11° in the morning creeps up to 12° if sunny outside. It's a lot warmer in the cellar tbh than the house.

Bestcatmum · 05/12/2022 12:48

Somerset, outside very cold at night where I am.
I live in a 1980's terraced house built by a local builder with excellent insulation and double glazing which is new.
So far I haven't been cold enough to turn the heating on - and i hate being cold.
It was really good during that boiling summer too, it stayed pretty cool.
Its the best insulated house I've ever had.

SweetPetrichor · 05/12/2022 12:52

Ours is a 1930s terrace. Downstairs drops a lot overnight as it’s quite open plan. Currently dropping to around 14.5 overnight. Upstairs isn’t bad, it generally only drops to 16 overnight which is fine for us. The converted attic is Baltic and we don’t use it in winter…in summer it is my office but I moved downstairs for the cold months!
But this is just how far it drops between the heating going off at 7pm and coming on again at 9am…it would be lower if the heating was permanently off,

Proneu82 · 05/12/2022 12:53

Never more glad to live down south.

so mild. Heating needed only very sporadically at the moment thank goodness

Suzie0003 · 05/12/2022 14:21

4 bed detached house built in 1995. Drops down to about 13.5 with no heating. I keep it at 15 at night and 17.5 during the day

cantba · 05/12/2022 16:13

12.5 degrees
Today.
