What shall I do in London on Wednesday?

Was planning to go to the Postal museum, but stupidly forgot to check it's actually open. Thought about the Tower, but it's very pricey. Is it worth it? I like museums, and interesting places.

British Museum - free
V&A - free
National Gallery - free
Courtauld Gallery - £ 18 but free if you have an art pass
Wallace Collection - free
Get on a bus and see the lights in Regent St and Oxford St
Take a river boat to Greenwich and visit the Queens House and National Maritime Museum

What kind of stuff do you like? Postal museum sounds really boring 😂

They do have an underground railway though.

EvilRingahBitch · 03/12/2022 12:52

Tower of London is amazing and the weather should be dry, though very cold, so if you're doing it wrap up very warm with thick soled shoes and gloves.

Greenwich is great (will also be cold though)
Sir John Soanes Museum is open on Wednesdays. www.soane.org

@catsanddogs34 I love stuff like that. I've been to two tile museums and a toilet museum. 😂😂 my colleagues think this is hysterical.

Treason exhibition at the National Archives looks good, and free, but like Greenwich you'd be spending a lot of time travelling.

Tower is one of the very best days out I've ever had. Get there early. You will spend the whole day there.

Zipps · 03/12/2022 12:58

The war rooms
Battersea power station
All the window displays
Harrods food hall
The sky garden - might be too late to book
The London museum

RosesAndHellebores · 03/12/2022 12:59

Transport Museum in Covent Garden, then have a wander
Huntarian Museum
Museum of Childhood
Combine Imperial War Museum and The Foundling Museum
Tate Modern
National Gallery
Portrait Gallery
See if there's anything of interest at the Royal Academy and have an amble round Fortnums, cut down Jermyn Street and have a walk across the Mall and into St James's Park
Have a gander round Southwark Cathedral, possibly take in a service, look at one of the little markets adjacent and then walk along South Bank taking in the views and the walk, cross Westminster Bridge have a look at Big Ben and Parliament, double back along the river - have a cold coffee at Somerset House and take in the Courtauld.

I'd just go shopping. Get off at Tottenham Court Road cut down the back, back entrance into M&S, out again to twirl round Liberty's: Kate Spade, Coach, Co's (and others) on Regent Street, turn right onto Piccadilly, do Waterstones and Fortnums, (there are some nice coffee shops along Piccy), walk past the Ritz and catch a bus to Knightsbridge. I'd just do Harvey Nicks and then walk along Kensimgton Gardens to Kensington High Street. You'll get your steps in and hopefully go home happy.

Was one of the tile museums the one is Lisbon? That was AMAZING!

Go to the British Museum, or have you been to John Soanes house? Everyone should go there once, it's really unique. Given your tastes I suspect you'd love it!

Ooops totally missed that Soanes was already recommended. Still - further recommendation not a bad thing.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/12/2022 13:32

I'm going buy coach that doesn't get in till at least 11.30. So I suspect I won't have enough time to do the Tower justice. Would like to catch Evensong somewhere, but the music list at St. Paul's isn't grabbing me. And I don't think the Abbey has it that day.

I think ive already done the Soane museum. Is it the one where you have to knock on the door of a house, to get in?

Have you been to the Charles Dickens House? It's near the postal museum.

I love to visit St Paul's when I have time to myself and do the audio guide.

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 03/12/2022 13:38

Dennis servers house?

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 03/12/2022 13:40

Will be cold but Highgate cemetery then lunch in the Flask. Or Kenwood house is lovely too. On the edge of the heath

Yika · 03/12/2022 13:44

How about doing a guided walk with London Walks? They are full of quirky historical facts.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/12/2022 14:11

I love Highgate cemetery, done a couple of times. Would love to go a hidden underground tour but they are ££. Will look up London. Walks.

@Yika brilliant idea!! Thanks, I've booked on the Old London walk. Can have a look at some of the Wren Churdrs as well. Then pick up Evensong at St Paul's it Southwark. I only ever seem to go when it's just the men. And they sing to much plain chant!

Toddlerteaplease · 03/12/2022 14:22

I love St. Paul's but think it's way to overpriced for a Cathedral. Though I have no problem with charging for entry, it's a bit steep!

I was deeply disappointed by Kenwood House , it didn’t help that I’d already had a run in with the car park attendant. I was going to say The Wallace collection . Tower of London works out better value if you buy an annual membership to the historic royal palaces which covers Hampton Court and others as well .

Toddlerteaplease · 03/12/2022 14:27

Thanks @Floralnomad I'll look into membership.

Oh I’m pleased that works for you! I’ve done a few, I love them! That way I can combine walking around outside with a bit of history and culture - and you get to see hidden corners of london that you wouldn’t spot otherwise. Hope you will enjoy it!

Toddlerteaplease · 03/12/2022 15:08

I'm sure I will enjoy it!
