EVRI put parcel in blue bin while we were away and it's been emptied by bin men

We have never requested that they put any of our parcels in the bins but quite a few times they have done this now. We often take parcels in for the other neighbors and they're always do the same so don't know why they put it in the blue bin. Last week I ordered a £50 sweatshirt for DP for Christmas. We've been away since Tuesday, just got back today and neighbor must of pulled out blue bin while we were away as it's been emptied with the parcel inside. Parcel said it was delivered yesterday, the same day the bins get emptied. I guess there's nothing really we can do is there?

My Evri driver is great - always cheery and pleasant, things come on time, if not in he puts them in our "safe place"; plus I always get an email saying "arriving between x and y and possibility of rearranging". And never yet had a problem with an Evri parcel being delivered to the recipient, so can't just be my driver who is good. So please don't say they're all useless!

My bugbear is the drivers (mostly Amazon) who leave parcels on the doorstep in full view of the road - I'm amazed they've never been stolen.

I went to my son’s house yesterday to walk their dog. I saw 8 houses in their street with an Amazon package lying on the doorstep. In addition to the risk of being stolen it’s advertising to local scumbags that all these houses are unoccupied all day.

A bin isn't a 'safe place'. If the driver put the package in a bin without explicit instruction has simply thrown it away.

Our evri driver is fab. If you have a bin problem. Print out note saying DO NOT LEAVE PARCELS IN THE BLUE BIN PLEASE. print put in a plastic bag and tape to the blue bin

If you have "a bin problem", type out and then print out something that literally spells out to delivery drivers that they should not to deliver parcels into your bin? No, don't do this.

I doubt there is a single carrier that doesn't explicitly tell its drivers NOT to use any waste receptacle as a "safe place". If you find your parcels are being left in stupid places, complain to the carrier, every time. You might think you don't want to get the driver into any trouble, but all drivers know where they can and cannot deliver parcels to. Any driver who needs a sign on a BIN telling them what not to do either isn't very well suited to parcel delivery or – more likely, let's be honest – does this to many customers every single day and deserves to be complained about.

How are you supposed to guarantee you're home for every delivery? I've got several parcels due this week but they only say they'll arrive between (for example) 9 to 12th Dec. Am I supposed to stay home every day until they arrive?

Not every company does next day or specified delivery & even if they do you're often at the mercy of the courier as to whether it comes on time

In all honesty yes. Or if not perhaps online shopping isn't for you unless you order to an Amazon lockup or some companies allow delivery to a local corner shop. Personally I get deliveries to work but if I can't get it delivered to work because I am off. Then yes I don't go out.

Notanotherwindow · 04/12/2022 10:31

@Itsbiasedhere Thing is though, when you order something, you get a pretty big delivery slot. Like 7 to 10 days. You can't stay in for 10 days straight, every time you buy something and not everything has the option of a collection point.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 04/12/2022 10:51

Haven’t rtft but just wanted to say that Evri’s customer service has actually been quite good to me since they stopped being Hermes (which was bloody useless, frankly).

This is definitely not something you should give up on. Bloody annoying though. I don’t know why anyone would want a parcel put in a bin anyway!

Summerhouse2013 · 04/12/2022 11:00

When I receive an email from Evri asking if my parcel was delivered ok, you can click on it and go to options such as 'change my safe place for delivery'. You can select from garage, garden, back door, porch etc.
This way they have to deliver it to where you have stipulated.

Your legally entitled to a refund but it really grates me as a delivery driver when people order stuff but then aren't in to receive it. I never order to home unless I am going to be in. Of course people complain if it goes back to depot that only opens during core hours and they moan if you leave it with someone else or in a safe place.

How does that work? I have a big family to buy for at xmas and have ordered literally hundreds of items. In most cases i have no way of knowing in advance when they are being delivered. Should I stay home until Christmas day?

😂😂😂

I've got 4 parcels due this week.
Not one can give me an exact date for their arrival.

If I'm ordering from Amazon then I arrange it for when I'm home.
The parcels I'm waiting for are from smaller companies and they don't specify a date.

Online shopping is very much for me and thankfully the couriers in my area are fab

EBearhug · 04/12/2022 18:04

The last parcel I received came a day earlier than I had been told it would, so had I arranged a day off for it, it wouldn't have helped.

What is going on with the bin men? How are they seeing an unopened parcel in a recycling bin and thinking it's recycling? Unless it's very small it would be really obvious. Are they keeping it? They're quick enough to dump anything else they think shouldn't be in the recycling on the floor/leave it in the bin and not take it/refuse to empty the bin full stop. Our blue bin is for paper and dead electronics, a sealed parcel is very obviously not these.

Hope you can sort it out with ASOS OP. I stopped shopping with them when I realised there's no phone number to contact them in case of a problem and all online reviews I saw said trying to get hold of them is impossible.

Since when are binmen responsible for checking deliveries aren’t in the bin? Their job is to empty the bin, not act like a sorting office. Delivery drivers shouldn’t be putting stuff in bins in the first place.

mincepiepie · 04/12/2022 18:56

The one time, in summer, I ordered the dog food on subscribe and save (so I can't pick a day) they delivered it to the nearly full rubbish bin.

I was livid! I mean surely common sense prevails and you don't put a £40 bag of food in a bin?

They did refund me though.

It can be annoying when people aren't in, particularly if they don't have a proper safe place or if their closest neighbours also aren't in, but it is actually the job, isn't it, to deliver the parcel? And sometimes there will be good days and sometimes bad days, but that's the same with all jobs. If you can't get on with that, probably parcel delivery is not really the job for you.

Home delivery is a service that is paid for. Delivery companies are doing a job for the customer; it's not the customer's job to make your day as easy as possible for you. There will always be a problem as far as the driver is concerned – the customer should be in to receive the parcel, they should answer the door within 3 seconds, they should have their ID in their hand when they come to the door if they need to show it, and so on. Also, ideally, there should be a good parking spot outside their house, not too much walking to the front door, preferably don't live on a farm, don't have an ambiguous "front" door, don't live in a flat, but if you do you should come downstairs and not make me walk upstairs, on and on.

Deadringer · 04/12/2022 23:22

We have a porch and generally deliveries are left in there. Anyone could take the parcels of course but we live in a decent area and that hasn't happened as yet. A lot of what I order has free delivery so my expectations aren't high but i think if you pay for it they should at least ring the bell. I had an new iPhone delivered last week, I paid for delivery but it was just tossed into the porch, they didn't bother knocking. Luckily I was home and watching out for it in and brought it in straight away. Very annoying.

Whataretheodds · 04/12/2022 23:28

Are we supposed to wait in for 24 hours?

And that's for the deliveries where we know which day they are coming.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 04/12/2022 23:57

Our Evri delivery person is first class. Royal Mail, on the other hand, leave my parcels sticking out from under my doormat in full view of passers by and at least twice in a dense clump of ivy in my flowerbed ( sometimes days before they come to light).
