New owner sending parcels to a house they do not own yet

coffeeneeded · 01/12/2022 20:39

We complete on the house next Tuesday.

I have just received a sizeable package for the next owners. It came from overseas and the only option for the courier was to send it back.

My conscience got the better of me and I took it in. But I will have to give it to a neighbour to look after so it doesn't get packed up with our stuff.

House house is small- no room to store things.

Would it be awful of me to refuse any other packages that happen to arrive for them?

WWYD?

Well if you happen to be there, why would you?

ZestFest · 01/12/2022 20:41

I think you'd be within your rights to do so, but it's very mean.

Summerishere123 · 01/12/2022 20:42

That is super cheeky of them. If they had asked then I would have considered it. Do you have a shed or somewhere you can leave it for them? A garage maybe?

MaryMollyPolly · 01/12/2022 20:42

I think it would be mean of you.

MelchiorsMistress · 01/12/2022 20:43

I’d be worried about things getting damaged or mistakenly packed during the move. They should be able to get things re delivered at a later date.

Luana1 · 01/12/2022 20:43

If it came from overseas then they may have genuinely thought they would be in the house when it arrived, I think you are over reacting a bit to be worrying if any other parcels come for them - there is no reason to think that would happen and what even is the likelihood of multiple parcels arriving in the next couple of days?

Itstheway · 01/12/2022 20:45

If it came from overseas perhaps they thought it would arrive next week when they’d be in the house. Don’t see it as a big deal tbh I wouldn’t be petty as to send it back

Snoopsnoggysnog · 01/12/2022 20:48

i couldnt get too worked up about this

coffeeneeded · 01/12/2022 20:53

Not getting worked up about it.

But as a previous poster said I am worried about this parcel getting knocked or lost in the move. Our house is small and there is nowhere to store it.

Hopefully there won't be any more.

Thanks all

Where are they moving from? Do they have any friends or relations in the area who could pick it up for safe keeping?

Itstarts · 01/12/2022 20:59

I'd assume delivery estimate was later too, not done intentionally.

slowquickstep · 01/12/2022 21:05

I really couldn't be arsed getting worked up about this.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 01/12/2022 21:09

They may not know. Have probably given new address and enthusiastic relative has sent a parcel

Beees · 01/12/2022 21:11

They're not sending parcels though are they, they had one item delivered which likely turned up early and for which they would probably be mortified.

You're not going to mistakenly pack it when you move if it's sizable so the logical thing to do is let them know it's arrived by way of a quick email and tell them you'll happily leave it in a designated cupboard for them upon departure.

It really is a non issue.

Headabovetheparakeet · 01/12/2022 21:14

Why do you think more will arrive? There's only been one and if it's been sent from overseas, there's a good chance it's a gift from someone they know.

Someone sent a card to our house just before completion because they live overseas and thought exchange meant we had completed and moved in. Simple mistake.

onlythreenow · 01/12/2022 21:20

It's probably a Christmas gift if it is from overseas - the postal cut-off dates here were ridiculously early. I don't imagine there will be loads of them coming, but surely it's not too difficult to find a box or something to put this one (and any more if there are) into it. I live in a flat and it wouldn't bother me to keep parcels aside for the new owner. I agree, it is a non issue.

saraclara · 01/12/2022 21:21

I regularly get parcels from abroad. It's an absolute lottery. Things can arrive weeks, even months later than expected, and other times, surprisingly early.

I think it's very likely that they were given a conservative delivery date, and for some reason it's got here early.

Have you told them that you can't guarantee it's safety while you're packing up? Do they even know it's there? How big is it?

saraclara · 01/12/2022 21:24

Good point. The last mailing day to guarantee delivery for Christmas is often ridiculously early. Then if all goes smoothly parcels arrive silly early.

gannett · 01/12/2022 21:25

It's really, really easy NOT to take things with you in a house move. How is this a significant worry.

Last time we moved it was out of a rented flat and leaving the things we didn't want to take was not a bother at all.

We also had a couple of parcels delivered to our house before completion and that also wasn't a bother (though we did ask the previous owners in advance).

Newwardrobe · 01/12/2022 21:25

Just stick a big note on it saying 'To be left here'
I doubt it'll get damaged especially if it's made it all the way from abroad.

kirkandpetal · 01/12/2022 21:26

For goodness sake get a grip. Clearly the parcel has arrived earlier than estimated. Unless you are a hoarder and every inch of your house is full of your stuff, there is nothing to stop you taping a A4 bit of paper to the parcel saying 'DO NOT PACK. TO REMAIN IN HOUSE' and popping it in a corner somewhere.

Topee · 01/12/2022 21:29

Stick a ‘Do not pack’ note on it. Put it in the first room that’s cleared. It’s not really onerous to look after one parcel for 4 days, don’t know why you think it’s means they’ll be others.

Whatsthestorytomorrow · 01/12/2022 21:30

It really would.
It’s 5 days.

Pidgeonslipshit · 01/12/2022 21:34

I really would just do the right thing and accept anymore parcels and leave in a designated cupboard. Really wouldn’t be arsed to give it another thought.

Honeyroar · 01/12/2022 21:45

It’s really rude of them. Could you ask the estate agent to tell them to collect it as you’re over run with boxes as it is.
