Kerbed my alloy wheel, help!!

Fuuuuuuuck! Never ever drive to school but I had to this morning as I've got an emergency dentist appointment now.

Anyway no where to park, dc banging on about something to do with nothing and I've seen a space so I've quickly pulled in and completed kerbed the front wheel. Nice shiny black alloys on my nice new to me little car 😫 I've only had it 6 weeks and it's a downsizing money saving car, to say husband is not going to be pleased is an understatement!!

So anything I can do? Tempted to try a black sharpie but there's bits of metal hanging off!! Anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost me to get it secretly sorted?!

Now have to go into dentist because my filling fell out while I was scoffing a jacket potato yesterday! Merry Christmas!!

I’ve kerbed my alloys and it precisely guck all to do with my partner, even though he bought the car for me 🤭. I tend to just brazen this stuff out. No one has died. I’m just not hurting my head about it.

parsniiips · 01/12/2022 09:16

Don't use a sharpie I've tried this previously on a scratch and it doesn't match, makes it looks worse.

I don't know how much a wheel would cost to repaint but a small scratch on my door cost £140 because the whole door had to be resprayed.

RudsyFarmer · 01/12/2022 09:16

Fuck dear phone, that would be fuck 🙄

Go to a garage and ask if it can be detailed repair. Or Google it, shouldn't cost too much. I got some black spray paint and touched mine up after looking at lot of YouTube

TheFairyCaravan · 01/12/2022 09:17

DS1 kerbed one of his alloys. He had a company come to the drive to fix it for him.

I don’t understand the angst about scratching a wheel, DH almost cried when he did it. It doesn’t stop them working. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 01/12/2022 09:19

@RudsyFarmer maybe I need to just brazen it out like you said and be like look I've done this but hey no one died and the car still works!!

Dentist receptionist won't let me in until dentist is ready so I'm standing outside freezing and stressing over a wheel!!

I wrapped one side of my DH's brand new E-Class round a tree in our drive last week.

Style it out.

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 01/12/2022 09:20

@TheFairyCaravan I couldn't give a toss really as like you said it still works but I know dh will be pissed off and I hate having to fess up to a mistake! Plus the fact I've only had it 6 weeks doesn't help.

Its a wheel that goes near the kerb. Lots of firms refurb/repair them. Look online for someone near you. Will just cost some money! Car works, wheels turn

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 01/12/2022 09:22

@Vinvertebrate omg! That makes my alloy look like nothing to worry about!

JohnsShirt · 01/12/2022 09:23

I did it to one of mine on my last car and just left it.
It's really not a big deal

snowflake29 · 01/12/2022 09:24

I did this in my husbands brand new BMW and he nearly cried! 🙈

No idea how much it cost to refurb, but I think it can be fairly pricey depending song on the wheel/car type.

Hopefully you can get it sorted easily enough (if you want to)

thenightsky · 01/12/2022 09:25

Google wheel refurb in your area. It'll cost between £40 and £60 in my experience. I've got soft stupid alloys on my car and they bend if I hit a pothole to hard. Got my wheel refurb people on speed dial almost 🙄

RudsyFarmer · 01/12/2022 09:26

There was nothing so unappealing as seeing my friends husband throw a tantrum at her when she kerbed the alloys on HER car. Quite honestly I’ve no idea how she had sex with him again.

My OH just rolls his eyes. It’s my car. If I’m not bothered then he either sorts it or leaves it. I don’t drive his car though. If I did it to his car he probably would leave me 😬

glasshole · 01/12/2022 09:27

I did this in my brand new tiguan R line in the snow/ice. Like a slow motion slide across the road and two passenger side wheels went "SKREEEEEE". I got a quote for £120 each to be reskimmed (?!) and the black bits sorted. Then my DH pointed out that I was a pretty fast driver and always clipping Kerbs while I was listening to music and it would probably be the start of a very regular expensive relationship with the wheel guy. So 3 1/2 years on they are exactly the same ..... with a few more dings 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

PickleSarnie · 01/12/2022 09:34

Depends if they are diamond cut alloys not. Those need to taken away and the wheels need to come off. And is quite spendy. Although you will find people who will make diamond cut alloys look pretty perfect without that and for much less cost. We did that and was, I think about 50 quid a wheel. Which is about what it would be for regular alloys. Tbh though we tend to save up all the wheel dings and get it fixed once before we sell it.

Vinvertebrate · 01/12/2022 09:42

@ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner He was grudgingly impressed that I managed to ding every panel in a very tight space! Tbf I was looking all around wondering where the awful scraping noise was coming from. It's only a car, nobody died.

It's quite likely that you will ding the alloys again so I would not spend ££ on getting them fixed.

Bramshott · 01/12/2022 09:55

IME when these things first happen you think "OMG how dreadful, this looks awful I will definitely get it fixed". Then it sort of weathers in and you forget about it...

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 01/12/2022 10:05

I think I'm just going to tell him and leave it up to him to decide, I'm not fussed about it being scratched so if he wants to get it repaired then he can. Like a few of you said it's definitely going to happen again I guarantee it so we might as well leave it until it comes to wanting to sell.

My face is numb from my filling so I've given up stressing now and you have all convinced me it's fine and it's just a car!

My placid DP has a full on tantrum any time he kerbs an alloy. He did it on Monday and we had an argument after I tried to calm him down about how unimportant it is. He dinged one of my wheels when parking my car. Do I care? No. It’s a vehicle that gets you from A to B. If it had knocked the tracking off, I’d do something about it.

Sorry but I absolutely lolled at that. Hope you are not hurt!

My DH is the same, it baffles me tbh. I’ve got a huge ding in mine after I had to quickly pull in thanks to the bin lorry hurtling towards me. DH went on about it for ages. It’s my car fgs & I don’t care so I have no clue why he was so bothered.

Orangebadger · 01/12/2022 10:24

I have done this too many times to my car. I use to get a lecture from DH about it, he's given up! I don't see the big deal myself! The car still works it's only cosmetic and hardly noticeable, to me anyway!

readingegg · 01/12/2022 10:39

I have diamond cut alloys on one car and black on another. To be honest I wait until there's a few areas of damage then have them repaired. Personally I wouldn't pay to repair for one scratch.

No idea why some men get worked up over these things. My DH has curbed my big car loads as he's not used to its size, I wouldn't go in a strop with him about it.

Parky04 · 01/12/2022 10:39

We generally keep our cars for around 10 years. After those 10 years, the car is full of scuffs, scratches and dents! We never repair unless the damage means the vehicle is unroadworthy.
