Tell me about the fabulous area where you live so I can move there! (50s retired widow)

I find myself at a stage of life where I am on my own with no family and currently live in a lovely house in an idyllic rural village.

However, there’s no-one else living here at my life stage and I have to get in the car for everything. Many of my friends are moving away with their partners as they start retiring.

I am looking for somewhere where I can walk/cycle to facilities (doctor, chemist, coffee shop, leisure centre, small supermarket for top up shops), decent transport links to get further afield and somewhere with a good community and lots going on for my age group.

I would like like somewhere pretty to look at, with nice walks in countryside on my doorstep so thinking of a medium-large village, a market town or even an area of a larger town or city with the right vibe.

Where do you live that fits the bill?

Budget shouldn’t be too much of an issue as I don’t want anything particularly large (I don’t want the maintenance) and have a healthy amount to spend.

I'm in Hexham in Northumberland, everything you need in the town including leisure centre, community cinema and theatre (which has a fab book festival every year). Transport links to Newcastle are good.

MmeDefrag · 01/12/2022 09:20

Come to Saffron Walden. And give me a call when you get here.

PuggyMum · 01/12/2022 09:34

I'm in the North West and I often say if I'm in your position I would live in Knutsford.

Small town with a village feel and lots of cafes and bars / local cinema and you can walk right into Tatton Park.

Jansobieski · 01/12/2022 09:42

Looking up North, Bolton, Rochdale and Oldham are great. Market towns just outside Manchester. Bound to get something with your ample budget. Quality of life superb.
Public transport into Manchester second to none. No end of farmers markets and artisan bakeries.

ODFOx · 01/12/2022 09:46

St Ives , Cambs, sounds like a good fit: everything you asked for plus a guided bus into Cambridge for art and music. Or over the border in North Northants, Oundle and Thrapston are both small town/big village type places with lots of community things like U3A, yarn bombing, clubs etc for people who don't have to run about after DC any more.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 01/12/2022 09:46

Lymington in the New Forest. The demographic is older so there are loads of things to do for retirees and you are close to beautiful walks as well as the sea. Loads of cafes and pubs. It also has a train station and you're not far from Southampton for a bit more variety with shops and entertainment. It's a bit pricey though so depends on your budget. And the south coast is much sunnier!

The other St Ives (Cambridgeshire) fits the bill - walk to chemists, GP, shops, leisure centre. Great transport links, including to Cambridge. A market town. Very beautiful place with the river running through.

I live in Riddlesden which is a small village near Keighley. Love it here. Plenty of older people with lots going on. Lovely community feel. Buses run along the main road to Bradford and it's walking distance to the train station to get to leeds/ manchester/ York. Right on the edge of the countryside so can go for beautiful walks. You can even walk to Ilkley in a couple of hours. You wouldn't regret living here!

Ah, snap! St ives (Cambs) is great.

Hooverphobe · 01/12/2022 09:55

Please don’t stay in Airbnbs - they destroy those very lovely communities you’re pondering - and drive up the house prices for “even” people like you.

Illdoittommorow · 01/12/2022 10:11

Tenterden Kent. Near coast not too far from London on train but station a car or bus ride away.

Fedupofdiets · 01/12/2022 10:14

Shrewsbury. I moved here last and will only leave in my coffin. I adore it, so much to do, very pretty and near open countryside. The people are so lovely.

TulipTuesday · 01/12/2022 10:17

As others have suggested Ludlow and Shrewsbury (2 utterly gorgeous places!) I’ll suggest Church Stretton.

Between the two towns with the most stunning views and walks, has everything you need and also has a station where you could get to either town easily.

Ripon.

Bridport in Dorset is beautiful and is surrounded by stunning countryside, it has a market and plenty of eateries. It’s hilly but no mountains, and there are no motorways in Dorset.

TheMoops · 01/12/2022 10:22

Saddleworth, particularly Uppermill is exactly what you're describing.

Velvetbee · 01/12/2022 10:22

Another vote for Winchester. The little streets behind the cathedral would suit you.

I like Bripdort too. A lovely little town and close to some good beaches. Charmouth, Lyme Regis etc are also good. The jurassic coast is great and I'd love to retire there.

ShadowPuppets · 01/12/2022 10:26

Agree with those saying Surrey Hills. I used to live near Dorking - beautiful scenery and walks from my doorstep but a lovely town with everything you need and an easy journey to London whenever I wanted more buzz.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 01/12/2022 10:27

I'm in a small town on the coast (5 minutes walk to the sea and we have sandy beaches, but if I say seaside town you'll get the wrong mental image). There's a good network of coastal paths for walking, and a big wooded park right behind the town. Not far to proper hill walks.

Train to the city takes 15 minutes. And it's 10 minutes to a small airport if you want to got further afield.

We have multiple doctors, dentists and pharmacies, a proper old fashioned high street with butchers, bakers, greengrocers, a couple of fancy cheese places, delis, even a proper hardware shop. Plus a couple of small supermarkets in town and 2 big ones an easy cycle away.

One council leisure centre and a private gym. A selection of lovely cafes and restaurants (2 Michelin mentions, a regular Good Food Guide winner, and a couple that get into the Observer food guide most years). Pubs, too. There's a local craft collective and some daytime activities that I've not investigated too closely because I'm still working full time; bit short on evening stuff but there's plenty of that in the aforementioned city. Two yacht clubs, and more churches than you can shake a stick at.

Howeve, it's in Northern Ireland - so if you currently live in England, your existing friends will never visit. And a lot of GB online shops don't deliver here (Amozon does but is fussy about electricals).

TheAirbender · 01/12/2022 10:35

Warwick!
lovely countryside, so well connected (great motoway links, super fast trains to London and Birmingham, gorgeous villages and Leamington Spa + Stratford Upon Avon just next door.

emmathedilemma · 01/12/2022 10:36

It might be too urban but Edinburgh ticks many of your boxes......there's lots of local high streets e.g. Portobello, Morningside and Stockbridge which have the amenities you want without having to go into the city centre. Fast trains down the east coast to London, international airport, hills on one side of the city and the sea on the other, lots of green space, excellent buses......the only downside is probably the price of property!

Squeezedsquash · 01/12/2022 10:40

Can I add into your criteria that at some point on your retirement you might need a major hospital and it’s much nicer if you can get there easily rather than be an hour’s drive away…

Romsey, near Winchester, would easily meet your suggestions. But also Cirencester would be attractive to me.

I grew up walking distance to Whalley. It’s a lot dryer down south ;)

Throughabushbackwards · 01/12/2022 10:40

Lewes! There's a real mixture of people and a vibrant community. Right on the South Downs but with good train links, very close to Brighton and only an hour or so London.
