This can’t be real. I’m pretty sure all those who complained are just taking the piss?!
Please tell me they are taking the piss! Or everyone is just offended by everything these days?

I wouldn't put anything past people now days. You only have to read the thread on here of people completely 'outraged' at normal things!

pocketvenuss · 30/11/2022 15:10

But they are called 'Mom' jeans, not 'Mum' jeans. That is literally the name of the jean style

Dotingmumandgranny · 30/11/2022 15:11

I wouldn't care what they call them as long as they fit.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/11/2022 15:12

"Mom" is commonly used in the midlands.

West Midlands to be specific, in the Black Country. We don't use it in the east midlands.

Bluevelvetsofa · 30/11/2022 15:24

I don’t care what they’re called as long as they fit and I’m not expected to pay £39.50 for them.

S0upertrooper · 30/11/2022 15:38

Georgeskitchen · 30/11/2022 15:39

I saw that in the article. They bloody well were not called that in the 80s. Nope! Not in the UK. That's back naming them, taking on an Americanism to give something a label!

They've been around since the 60s. They were just "Levi's". That being the bog standard shape of Levi jeans. High waisted, straight legged jeans. Just normal jeans, pre elastane!

spiderlight · 30/11/2022 15:50

I'm Welsh. I insist that they rename them Mam jeans immediately.

MendaciousMabel · 30/11/2022 15:51

Bloody hell it’s just the style of them and that’s what it’s called!

and as others said people seem to be very quick to forget or ignore that “mom” is the word used in West Midlands…

pechecreme · 30/11/2022 15:53

@SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth I absolutely called my Black Country born and bread Mom 'Mom' in the 80's. As did she with her Mom in the 50's/60's/70's plus the other 10 kids my Nan had as well. As did my Dad, also Black Country who was born in the 40's.

I was talking about the jeans. Only the jeans. Nothing but the jeans. Using Mom for jeans. Not the word Mom. I know that's a Black Country term - for yer mam!

The jeans weren't called Mom or Mum jeans back in the 80s. Not by anyone, shop, brand, I knew, from Liverpool, across East Anglia and into the W Midlands!

Jeans! Not mothers.

xJ0y · 30/11/2022 15:59

I bought two pairs without giving this a thought. I suppose the trend was named by American fashionistas.

Mum is one of those words that causes so much divisiveness. I hate it. In Ireland where I am I've had people insinuate I'm affected/being fakely English to say Mum (instead of Mam) but I've also mixed with people who said Mamá and I felt a little ordinary for saying Mum!!)

They're not just bog standard fit of Levis though. Proper mom jeans have a bit of a looser fit in the hip and thigh area. Not just straight legged.

So should we have been calling skinny jeans "drain pipes" like in the 80s too?

I hate the expression 'Get a life', but I'll make an exception in this case.

Its just shit journalism, everyone these days is outraged, heartbroken, devastated etc when maybe 3 people left comments somewhere sounding a bit annoyed.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 30/11/2022 16:24

I don't care what they are called now. They weren't called that in the UK in the 80s.

Levis had that extra room. That extra room. That was their schtick!

We had boot cuts, flares, jeans with ready made rolled up cuffs, nothing came between Brooke and her Calvin Klein's or Claudia and here whatever they were's. And we had baggier, looser jeans - think early Madonna, Dexy's even! But they weren't called Mom jeans at that time.

Those looser, high waisted, straight legged (not boot cut, baggies or flares) have always existed, since jeans have existed I would imagine, But the name? That's way more recent.

That's all I am saying. I am alive, was alive in my teens into 20s in the 80s. And we really didn't call them that! We just called them jeans and it was usually the brand, the label that defined them if anything did.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 30/11/2022 16:27

I demand they call them Dear Mater jeans to suit my upper class notions.

And my point isn't what you call them now. It's making out that's what they were called back then. As per the article.
