Do you answer email answers?

If you email a company enquiring about a product or an order you've made with them and they answer your question, do you then email back to say thank you? Is it polite or annoying - as it's a waste of the helpdesk worker's time to have to read another (useless) email?

e.g. you ordered a product but afterwards realised the picture was a different version to the one that was listed. You query to check that they will send what was listed and not pictured. They answer to confirm. Do you then email back to thank them?

No.
And it generally annoys me (on a very very low level) when I get work email me to say thanks as it's just another thing to process (even if that is just deleting)

YumSushi · 30/11/2022 15:26

Every email creates co2 somehow not sure how. So no. Exception being if they have provided really good service and might want a nice email for their manager to see.

TeddyBeans · 30/11/2022 15:27

I always put thanks in advance at the bottom of my emails, saves me having to send an email that literally just says thank you

Thats really rude and presumptuous

KupoNutCoffee · 30/11/2022 15:28

Depends....

If it sounds like they actually read my email and made an effort - rather than a generic 'all our products match their description...thanks' then I tend to reply with an acknowledgement.

From an office work perspective, these emails annoy me...but actually from working in customer services they were great. I could say I cleared 10 emails (because 3 of them were a thanks 😊), plus it made a nice change from 'this company and you personally have ruined my life/christmas/birthday because the item I ordered (which is no life changing device) has a slight defect"

It really isn't! It's efficient and courteous

Can you do this please? Thanks in advance.

It's rude. What if the answer is no as that would be the wrong thing to do.

Using op's example. Hi I ordered this, could you please confirm my item will match the description and not the pictures? Thanks in advance, TB. Hardly rude

Tdcp · 30/11/2022 15:35

I work in customer service and I answer a lot of emails. I really don't mind if people reply to say thank you, sometimes the emails are really lovely but equally it doesn't enter my head when someone doesn't reply.

Are people seriously getting offended at "Thanks in Advance" now?

Jeez. Stop the world, I want to get off!

Chewbecca · 30/11/2022 15:38

DH does, he thinks it is rude not to. I prefer not to as I think we are wasting the time of the reader.

I give in sometimes if I think it is useful for the other party to have acknowledgement that we have read and understood but draw the line at a pure thanks.

Just say thank you.

No need to say in advance

I agree. 'Thanks In Advance' indicates you assume (not hope) the person will do as you say and cannot possibly opt to say no.

It's like how using the word 'please' makes a request more polite. It's short for 'if it pleases you' or 'if you please.' It makes it clear that it's a request not a command.

TeddyBeans · 30/11/2022 16:03

Bloody hell if people don't like answering queries about their own products then they're in the wrong job

Tdcp · 30/11/2022 16:43

This thread is really bizarre :/

Yes thank you!

There no need to have the in advance.

barskits · 30/11/2022 17:04

If I send an email enquiring about something and they respond with what I need, then I send an email saying thank you. Why wouldn't you? If you were face to face and someone gives you what you asked for, then you would say thank you. It is polite, common courtesy and good manners.

TheKitchenWitch · 30/11/2022 17:08

Jesus wept, you're thanking something in advance for something you're asking them to do. It's like when you say "Could you just pass me the salt please? Thanks!" even before they've actually passed the salt.
I honestly despair at the things I read on here sometimes.

Yes you say thanks. You don't say thank you in advance

TheKitchenWitch · 30/11/2022 17:10

You don't have to say thanks in advance, but it's not rude to do so.

TellMeWhere · 30/11/2022 17:17

If I say "thanks in advance" and you can't do the thing, I expect you to reply telling me "sorry, I can't do the thing". Like a normal person. I only usually say it when the person really should be doing the thing though. "I need to receive all reports by 4pm. Thanks in advance".

I don't know how some people on here get through the day, with so much time spent getting offended😅

To answer your question, no, I rarely, if ever, respond to responses because I also hate receiving pointless emails.

Elphame · 30/11/2022 17:24

It depends.

I asked a company a technical question on a product I needed of which I had little knowledge.

Someone emailed me back within hours with a detailed reply answering my questions and telling me exactly what I needed to orderto do what I wanted to do. He even gave me the model numbers which I could have used to order elsewhere.

An email of thanks seemed very appropriate and I went ahead and ordered from them.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/11/2022 17:29

Small company yes, large company no (having worked for a large company it’s annoying as there are so many messages it takes a lot of time to sort and never gets back to the person who dealt with it)
