If you have a job that fits well around your kids, what is it?

I am looking for a career change, something that will hopefully give me a better sense of job satisfaction.

I have 2 young DC, aged 3 & 1 and they are my priority. I am looking for 30 hours per week max, where I will get weekends off and I can be present during my time with my kids.

If you have a job like this, what is it?

Civil service. Very flexible working policies. Nature of my role is such that sometimes I have to catch up in the evening, but it's rare.

What kind of roles in the civil service would you suggest looking at?

Depends on your background! There's a pretty set grade pattern - defrajobs.co.uk/working-here/civil-service-grades-explained/ this provides an explanation.

Copywriting. I do 24 hours a week over three days, WFH so I can do nursery runs, and when I return from maternity I’ve been offered school hours but we’ve yet to have the discussion about what that looks like and which days. They’re very flexible with me, though.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 29/11/2022 16:39

I worked 0930 - 1500 in a bank contact centre.

How did you get into this and what's the wage like please?

Are most of the roles WFH or office based?
When I search in my area not much comes up so wondering if I'm not close to any offices

I’m on £50k pro-rata, can’t remember what my take home is. Used to be a journalist and editor, got this particular role after having my first baby and doing a five-day week and hating it, so I looked solely for 4-day week jobs and found this one on a fixed-term contract. Had the writing skills but not the sector expertise but wrote a persuasive cover letter and interview presentation about transferable skills and let them mould me; made myself indispensable so when the contract came to an end they asked me to stay on, at which point I negotiated the 3-day week and the flexibility.

What work do you do now and what’s your background? The big boom sector is green jobs which are crying out for people and willing to take on transferable skills candidates, it’s an employees’ market so quite good for negotiating hours and flexibility, etc.

I don't have children yet but I'm jumping on the thread! I'd love a change!

NotaCoolMum · 29/11/2022 16:47

Teaching Assistant! School hours and term time only!!

VenusClapTrap · 29/11/2022 16:50

Gardener/garden designer. I choose my hours. Fully flexible. Great job satisfaction. Terrible pay.

xfan · 29/11/2022 16:54

For those of you on "terrible" pay, how do you pay for rent/mortgage?

Mousicles · 29/11/2022 16:55

Also civil service, I do 30 hours now I've done a few different patterns as kids needs have changed. 40% in office so most people don't live that near to the main offices, I commute an hour each way but only 1 or 2 days a week the rest is from home. Flexi-time means I've never missed a school event.

Marketing consultant- 2/3 days pw, set my own hours

Lemonademoney · 29/11/2022 16:57

School office. The hours are great and I love the job BUT it is crazy crazy busy and very very poorly paid given the level of responsibilities. However I love picking my children up from school and spending most of the holidays with them so it’s a sacrifice I am grateful to be able to make.

Can I ask what your role is within the civil service? I've searched a number of times on the website and can never find anything!

So so many jobs are based at home now when they didn't used to be - I've always been fully home based but if you look around you'll see lots of roles now. It's really handy for working around pick ups etc

Mousicles · 29/11/2022 17:06

@brilliantamazingfantastic I'm an analyst, they recruit analytical roles pretty frequently. I just responded to an advert on the civil service jobs website, but they also recruit via the fast stream. As far as I'm aware policy roles also have the same flexibility.

Boating123 · 29/11/2022 17:06

Town planner. I work 8:30 - 12:40 Monday- Friday because that is what I want to do. There is a particular shortage of minerals and waste planners.

I recommend regularly looking on your Council's website for jobs. Something might crop up you haven't even thought of that appeals and is local to you.

Heyahun · 29/11/2022 17:08

I’m work as and office manager and do the payroll at a company - I do 28 hours a week - I do 8-4 in the actual office 2 days a week - but if I eat lunch at my desk instead of a break I can go at 3! Then I do 2 days at home and I start at 7am finish at 12 can do the other 4 hours of work anytime after child is in bed usually. I just sit in the sofa and do a bit of work with a cup of tea.

Sprogonthetyne · 29/11/2022 17:10

Overnight librarian at a university. I go after they're in bed, get back in time for the school run, and sleep while they're at school. It's also (university) term time only, so I'm around all school holidays except half term.
