If you have a job that fits well around your kids, what is it?

I am looking for a career change, something that will hopefully give me a better sense of job satisfaction.

I have 2 young DC, aged 3 & 1 and they are my priority. I am looking for 30 hours per week max, where I will get weekends off and I can be present during my time with my kids.

If you have a job like this, what is it?

Where do you find clients? Interested in this.

When DS was school age I worked as an administrator within our local education authority - working term time within school hours . I think they are still decent employers but have taken a bartering with cuts and low pay rises, plus I don't think there is such flexibility offered to new starters . There are similar jobs still available within schools but I would imagine like gold dust . Still worth applying though .

Teaching Assisant. Terrible pay but as a single parent I get topped up with UC to pay my rent. One of my children goes to the school I work in and it's lovely.

What about virtual PA type stuff?

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 29/11/2022 17:39

@crisisofconfidence
I have a strong niche and I've worked in this industry for 12 years so it's all word of mouth and LinkedIn for me. I've only actually proactively pitched one client

TheOGSloth · 29/11/2022 18:06

I'm a PA for the Exec team in the NHS. I work 9-3 M-F, occasionally have to catch up with things in the evenings such as minutes etc but I do this once my daughter is in bed.

Fleurdaisy · 29/11/2022 18:26

Sprogonthetyne · 29/11/2022 17:10

Overnight librarian at a university. I go after they're in bed, get back in time for the school run, and sleep while they're at school. It's also (university) term time only, so I'm around all school holidays except half term.

As an insomniac your job sounds like my idea of heaven.
You mean you don’t have to speak to people, it’s quiet and you’re surrounded by books? How I wish I’d known such a job existed. 😔

EezyOozy · 29/11/2022 18:29

I’m a finance manager for a charity, I work 0900-1430 weekdays only

AriettyHomily · 29/11/2022 18:32

Prof services. I do have to pick up slack in the evenings sometimes but goes with the territory.

yoshiblue · 29/11/2022 18:37

What area are you in?

ThereIsATInWater · 29/11/2022 19:06

Junior school cook.

Home by 2pm everyday.
Weekends, Inset days and school holidays off.

Lj8893 · 29/11/2022 20:15

Midwifery management.

I work Mon-Fri 8.30-4.30, but some of that is WFH. I’m full time.

obviously though I’ve had to do a lot of unsociable working on the way to my current position.

Try public sector? Most people in my workplace can work very flexibly.

Or I often see small businesses advertise school friendly admin roles on local Facebook groups

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 29/11/2022 20:41

Wfh for our own business. I do what I need to do but when i want to do it. I do paperwork /invoicing Dh does the manual side of it.
So i do all school runs ( unless its raining then dh just starts late and does on his way) i dont know how that came about but im not complaining.
I get to go to all school events, 24hr notice assemblies etc.
Was high Street retail prior. So have had to learn a lot of new stuff.
I have a toddler so i do mostly of an evening.
But if i have other stuff to do or visit friends dh does my work.

Im very lucky because it fits around life and dh appreciates i run the home so he is happy to do my side of things as and when

WorriedMillie · 29/11/2022 20:45

I WFH as a manager for a healthcare charity. I work compressed hours, as I have a great team, who can manage themselves well when I’m not working. It means wrap around care and a lot of winging it on my working days, but I get a long weekend, which I love!

Pondlifer · 29/11/2022 20:55

I work in a university in a non academic / non student facing role (research centre management). I have found the university to be a family friendly flexible employer. I think it's different for academics though. It's much tougher for them due to their work loads. There are additional 'closure day' holidays at Christmas and Easter which helps with covering those holidays. Things really slow down over the summer so taking chunks of leave at that time is not a problem. It's been great for me. Pay isn't amazing but not too bad. Pension is good too as it's local government (but this isn't the case for all non-acadmic jobs in Unis so worth checking).

7catsisnotenough · 29/11/2022 20:58

School catering - term time only but annualised pay per month (so paid holidays). Means I'm around for childcare in the holidays for DGC

For those of you on "terrible" pay, how do you pay for rent/mortgage?

I’m on terrible pay but I don’t have a mortgage or rent. This was my plan all along, saved early & only bought a flat then a small house. I didn’t want any financial risk, hated having a mortgage & did everything I could to pay it off. I get-12500 PT now but it only has to pay bills then the rest is for doing nice things.
