Tin opener on plane

CourtneeLuv · 28/11/2022 19:32

Are you allowed to take a tin opener in hand luggage on a plane?

I'd imagine not but asking just incase.

But why would you need to???

toomuchlaundry · 28/11/2022 19:46

What tins are you planning to take?

MammaWeasel · 28/11/2022 19:49

A modern one yes, I would imagine, if you have a good reason. An old fashioned style one, probably not as it's sharp and pointy

There will be a list of prohibited items on the airline's website. But I too am intrigued as to why you would need one...

RoyKeaneisRight · 28/11/2022 19:52

@MammaWeasel is probably right, but I can't for the life of me think why you'd do that??? Are you bringing tins that'll need to be opened mid-flight?

CourtneeLuv · 28/11/2022 19:57

No, we live in europe. My dh has been in the UKand coming back in a week or so. A decent tin opener here is about 20 euros and I'm not paying that as we have at least two in the kitchen in the uk, so I wondered if he can bring one with him. He'll only be bringing hand luggage.

You're the person that they need pictures of chainsaws on the prohibited in hand luggage pictures 😁

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/11/2022 19:59

Get him to send one in the post to you .

Soontobe60 · 28/11/2022 19:59

Why not get him to bring one, and if its confiscated so be it.

JeanAbbott · 28/11/2022 20:05

Amazon ?

Amazon ?

I can't tell the quality of them on there. I've bought 3 and they've all been shit.

There's no telling what the import tax will be. They make that shit up as they go along.

😂

I was waiting at security to get through once and the woman infront of me kept getting her bag backed, so they unpacked it, scanned it, unpacked it, scanned it, eventually they found a fucking builders Stanley knife thing all wrapped up 😂😂😂 how she thought she'd get through with that, I'll never know.

Why do you need 3 tin openers?!

IglesiasPiggl · 28/11/2022 20:24

Or DH could take one for Team Tin Opener and check baggage?

PuttingDownRoots · 28/11/2022 20:31

You can take scissors with a small blade, so a tin opener would be fine I imagine.

Crazykatie · 28/11/2022 20:34

Anything sharp or on the banned list for cabin baggage needs to be in your hold bags. Otherwise don’t take it, that’s the way it is, if you only have a cabin bag be careful

CourtneeLuv · 28/11/2022 20:44

Why do you need 3 tin openers?!

They've all broken.

OP posts:
RoyKeaneisRight · 28/11/2022 21:02

Hopefully this isn't one of your 3 that have broken, but I have this tin opener and it's lasted longer than any other one. Very little exposed sharp bits so might get through airport security.

CourtneeLuv · 28/11/2022 21:34

Thanks, that one is on amazon for about 7e so I might order that one.

OP posts:
WhatsitWiggle · 28/11/2022 22:56

I have one of those - my mum bought it for me when I left for uni ... 30 years ago! It could do with being a bit sharper now but it still works.

Flapjackquack · 29/11/2022 08:35

My husband managed to fly to Europe with a broken radio aerial with a very sharp jagged point in his bag. They found it at security to get the flight home, shrugged and put it back in his bag! So I can’t imagine a tin opener is any more dangerous.

He had found it at the playground a week earlier and had picked it up with the intention of throwing it away so a child didn’t hurt themselves and forgot about it. Made me more concerned for airport security,

NashvilleQueen · 29/11/2022 08:40

Thought this was going to a discussion about a thrilling second sequel to Snakes on a Plane.

CharlotteStreet · 29/11/2022 08:42

It might not be the tin openers that are shit - I read somewhere that the make up of cans has changed, making them softer and harder to open.

I also have the one pictured - it works fine but you have to twist it twice each time.
