Have to admit that my husband got the first word as I had never heard of the clue word but I got the second.

Did everyone know the clue word except for me?

I love Ella Fitzgerald and remember hearing "ennui" first in the Cole Porter song "I get a kick out of you"
^When I'm out on a quiet spree,
Fighting vainly the old ennui
And I suddenly turn and see your fabulous face^
It's the French word for boredom but is used in English too. I've heard it used in period dramas and books. It's not used by anyone I know in day to day speech 😄

RegainingTheWill2023 · 28/01/2023 22:21

Oh god it's still today's word 😳
I'm really sorry if I've given too much info

Thanks Regaining. I will have another listen to the song.

Yes, when I asked my husband if he knew what the word meant, he said that the verb meant bored in French, but he had not heard it in English.

Stokey · 29/01/2023 13:41

Well done @RegainingTheWill2023. I was initially quite perplexed by this one.

Being pedantic, I'd say ennui meant boredom rather than bored

I couldn't remember what he had written, so got the words by chance.

I don't feel congrats are justified as it just popped straight into my head when I saw the name so no deep thinking involved- but thanks 😊
As for yesterday, I agree Stokey ennui means boredom rather than bored but that's what's so frustrating with xordle. The words may only have a vague connection or association with the starter words (or indeed may have no link at all!). Unlike crosswords where there is a match with tenses or parts of speech etc.
