Corner kitchen cupboard

About to move into a new home and planning what's going to go where in the kitchen. Anyone have a good solution for the rubbish corner cupboards that you can only access half of? I want to get one of those fitted pull out units but DH says they are really expensive and result in only being able to fit half as much stuff in anyway. He wants to get a couple of large plastic boxes to store stuff in so that you can pull the whole box out of one side to get to the other side - I say that's easy to say when you don't do the cooking 😅

Any novel ideas?

Could you use a corner carousel?

NewBlueShoe · 26/11/2022 16:56

Yes that's what I want but they are fairly price and reduce the capacity of the cupboard so wondering whether anyone has any other ideas.

We had a corner carousel and it worked well. You can access what you need without hassle.
We also had a corner cabinet without and it was pointless as we actually forgot what was in the non-accessible portion of it as we. couldn't be bothered to unpack it every time.

When we re-did the kitchen, we actually changed it, the corner is now the sink and it works so much better, underneath is just space for the usual box with cleaning stuff.

We've just down our kitchen, and in one corner we have a full height corner larder.... it's huge and fits so much stuff.

I can't stand corner cupboards such a waste of space. But the corner larder is amazing!

CourtneeLuv · 26/11/2022 17:21

Could you get a hinged door?

Chobbers · 26/11/2022 17:21

We’ve just done our kitchen and have 2 corner carousels - one on top of the other.
we’ve put the items that are in use the most in them.
They are brilliant and worth every penny. Look upon it as a long term investment in your new kitchen.

WyldeSwan · 26/11/2022 17:31

I got a corner carousel from Toolstation earlier this year for just over £40. It's great Yes you lose a bit of space round the edges, but as it's so much more usable space it's far better. If you put boxes in it you'll just lose the full cupboard to stuff you never use!

Wallywobbles · 27/11/2022 07:35

We spent ages on this. We ended up with a carousel and it has all my cast iron pots and huge pots on it. We are a big family and we have very large pots! It works extremely well.

Twizbe · 27/11/2022 07:40

Put least used items there. In one kitchen it was for my baking stuff which I only use once every few months.

In another it was our 'entertaining' cupboard where I kept all our serving dishes etc which we only use at Xmas

Limer · 27/11/2022 07:43

Do some research on the different sorts of carousels that are available - there are some very clever long oval ones that make good use of all the space.

TheTeenageYears · 27/11/2022 07:48

The internal bots for a corner cupboard are expensive but as someone who has the storage box solution your husband is proposing I would spend the money if there were no other limiting factors (ours has some washing machine plumbing in the corner which is in the way of where fittings would need to be).

They can be worth the money if you use them correctly- PPs have very good examples of this. Even though they can be expensive, they make the cupboard more usable, so it's a worthwhile spend. A friend of mine has mugs in hers - not good use of it, I'd say!

We have a corner, but we put doors on both sides (with hinges that go right back so we can open it out fully). It fits all our crockery, mugs and glasses on the top, and all our cooking/serving dishes on the bottom. We have it laid out so the things we use every day are at the front, and rarely used things are in the corner (where it's harder, but def not impossible, to reach). Works brilliantly for us.

Whycanineverever · 27/11/2022 07:51

Like a pp i put my 'entertaining' stuff in there. (That makes it sound more fancy than it is)

Basically stuff I don't need out very often.

SkylightSkylight · 27/11/2022 08:04

I hate hate hate carousels. Space wasting, awkward bloody things!!

I have a double hinged door, works perfectly for me.

in a previous house I did have plastic boxes/crate deep in the corner with seldom used stuff I didn't want to get rid of, and just used the 'ends' as normal cupboards.

the full height larders are the most practical use of the space if you can do without the worktop space! You can always cut around things if you have a meter or pipes there.

NotMeNoNo · 27/11/2022 08:18

Double hinged door and offset straight shelves. I've bored on about this before but we built it in our last kitchen and it was great. Somehow with the shallow shelves you can just see and reach everything better.
Second best IME is a straight corner with a magic corner version that pulls right out like this hafele

Baking trays in the top corner for us. We just reach over the tins to grab them.
Bottom shelf corner stuff we don't use (bread maker and smoothie maker)

I second this, but we have a curved door and shelves, I’ve had carousels and ‘manic corners’ and this is by far the best in terms of space utilisation and access.

Magic not manic!

Motherhubbardscupboard · 27/11/2022 08:33

I have a corner carousel but it doesn't turn all the way round because it gets stuck on the door hinges! Drives me nuts as I can't access things at the back

justasking111 · 27/11/2022 08:39

Two carousel cupboards. One with the gadgets for cooking. One with baking ingredients they're both great. The pull out larder between fridge and double oven amazing. The corner cupboard under the breakfast bar a pain in the ass. Your husband is wrong

AuntieDolly · 27/11/2022 08:46

I hate corner cupboards so much I didn't bother at all. The sink unit meets the drawer unit in the corner and the worktop covers the void. I don't have wall cupboards either, but a big floor to ceiling unit with sliding doors takes most of the 'stuff'.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 27/11/2022 08:47

We’ve got a full height corner larder unit and it’s brilliant, it’s got so much space and the corner bit is much more accessible than a carousel because one side isn’t as deep as the other.
This isn’t my kitchen by the way, I wish mine was as tidy.

We have one of these (not this brand) which is much better than the carousel in the other corner. We use the corner cupboards far more effectively than in our old house with no pull outs. I'd absolutely put them in if getting a new kitchen.

Dinoteeth · 27/11/2022 08:57

Op given its a new house I'd move in bung stuff in the back that you rarely use baking stuff / serving dishes.

See how you get on if its really bugging you in 6-12 mths I'd look again at fitting a carousel or something. Moving house just isn't cheap and there's likely to be other things you'll want to priorities over the cupboard.
